LOL!
I just realized that my older daughter is "cross dressing" this Halloween. She's going as Link from Zelda. I didn't even really think twice about it until this thread.

The younger one is going as some internet meme thing. It's like a digital cat that's shaped like a pop tart, and has a rainbow coming out of it. She's told me what it's called a couple times, but I keep forgetting.
I'm too old and out of touch to keep up with that stuff.

Halloween is one of the few times a year I wear a dress. I generally dress up in some of my Faire garb, just so that it gets worn more than once a year. Thinking about it, outside of Faire garb, I'm not certain I own a dress. I have a couple of skirts, but no dresses...

That's it! Needless to say she has a lot more faith in our ability to make her a costume than she probably should.

We had a little girl come to our house dressed as a stoplight. What does that mean? We also had a little boy of about three come to our door, we couldn't figure out what he was dressed as. He was a lawyer.

On one hand, society has certain expectations on how people are suppposed to dress and act. Yes, I agree it's great to think about how open minded everyone should be, and as long as it doesn't affect you then anything goes. But the reaility is society expects us to conform, at least somewhat. If you stay too far from what society expects you to conform, people are going to think you're werid and treat you differently because of it. And it's usually not the way you'll want to be treated. Dressing up for halloween is one thing, but a boy dressing up as a princess at other times is outside of what's normal. Imagine if he went to a job interview like with purple wings? Part of a parent's job to prepare them for the "real world" and the "real world" doesn't take kindly to straying too far from the norm. .... Basically, I think for haloween it's fine. I'd be a little more concerned if the kid wanted to dress like that all the time. Not because I think he'd turn out gay or anything, but because society doesn't tolerate straying too far from the norm, and kids especially can be very cruel. Phoenix, the purple wings to an interview thing isn't a gender issue, though. Neither a male nor a female applicant would get far with that costume at most companies. That's more an issue of whether you are wearing professional/appropriate work clothing, rather than judging what is correct for a man or a woman. Believe it or not, I had something that touches very close to this issue happen at a meeting not too long ago. When I was elected Treasurer of a not for profit, that role made me Chair of the Finance Committee. I inherited 2 other members, who had been there many years. The first few meetings were pretty standard and I enjoyed meeting and working with "Dan" and "Chris." Didn't see them at all outside the FC meetings, but they were nice guys. Anyway, fast forward six months and there's a hot financial crisis at the organization and I call an emergency meeting with the FC, the rest of the Executive Committee, the Manager and a few other hotshots. When I walk in to start the meeting, I briefly wondered who the new woman was since there are very few women in this place and none are in management. After a second look, I realize that the new woman is Chris, who was dressed as a man each time I've met him over the past 3 years. Took me about 2 seconds to decide that this wasn't a big deal. She was professionally dressed, wearing tasteful makeup and her hair looked pretty good. In other words, she didn't exactly look like a woman (maybe because I knew him before), but she was appropriately dressed for the situation and there was no reason that this had to be a thing. It did make my job infinitely easier that she had a name that could be either gender, so I just introduced everybody, introducing her as "Chris" and went on with business. No worries. After the meeting, a few of the men wanted to ask what the scoop was (they hadn't met Chris before and all realized at various points of the meeting that she wasn't what she had at first appeared to be), and I just shrugged and casually said that she was going through some changes and did they have any other financial questions? I mean, really, who cares if Chris was wearing pants or a dress? We were there to talk money, not fashion. Now, if Chris had been wearing purple fairy wings, this might have been a different discussion.... but that's true whether Chris was a man or a woman.

Why is a poptart shaped cat with a rainbow coming out of its ass so cute and hilarious?? I have no idea, but it is! Or I'm just drunk. ETA: wait, does it have strawberry frosting? Make that cute, hilarious AND delicious.

imawino - Your not drunk! It is totally cute! I think I might want to dress like that for Halloween
ETA: I am one of those people who always ends up wearing "cute" costumes for Halloween. Usually something lame like a cat, bunny, Genie, or 70's disco chick (last year).

Let me just add that I am a very girly girl in terms of dress - tons of skirts, dresses, heels, etc. Long hair. But I am probably the opposite of what anyone would consider a "good woman", except in regards to enjoying sex with men. I got that down.

But it is cute! Let me know how you are making the costume! And then if you can make me one that would be great! I don't sew, because I lack that feminine skill set.

The pop tart piece we're doing with painted cardboard. Sandwich board style. We figure we'll make a long rainbow cape for the rainbow part. The tail should be easy enough. The cat head we'll probably just do with makeup. I'm pretty sure we already have some cat ears in the dress up box, or one of the Halloween boxes.

I hate, hate, hate it when a man tries to order for me in a restaurant. I'm not so scatterbrained that I don't know what I want. Furthermore, I'm not mute. Not only am I capable of ordering for myself, but I can also ask questions. "Is this chicken organic? Is there any MSG in this dish? What's in the sauce?" I often insist on paying for myself. Why shouldn't I order for myself?

I oddly enjoy most manual labor. My sweetie built a log splitter and thinks it is hilarious that I will go out and split wood - he thinks I'm taking out some of my anger on the wood. Probably just feels grateful it's not on him for a change. I can't even imagine what I would do if someone (anyone) tried to order for me in a restaurant. How do they know what I'm in the mood for? Are there people who are so stuck in a rut that they always order the same thing? That's so sad. eta: saying "make that a double" after I place my drink order might be permissible. But that's where I draw the line.

The point is society expects people to dress and act a certain way. Some of that depends on your gender. You're doing your child a real disservice if you don't instill a sense of what society expects them to do. You can dress and act however you want, but if you stray too far from what's normal, you'll get negative feedback.
As I said, Halloween is different, that's the whole point of halloween, to dress up in crazy costumes. And being a young kid is different than being an adult. Kids do goofy stuff, it's part of their charm. Adults doing goofy stuff isn't quite as endearing.

Hmmm, I have a hard time imagining you as attractive or girly Weltz. Now being a radical feminist I can believe, since you are a radical leftist. And I don't know what your age is, but I imagined you to be older.
I guess I'll take your word for it, but I'll admit I'm skeptical.

What is so hard to understand here?
Don't dress your little boys like little girls, they're not.
It is as simple as that. And I'm sure the Scottish men have no problems wearing 'dresses'...and most of them are manly men. It's a cultural thing.
You want a little girl, maybe next time...and you can play with tea sets.
Seriously...some of you are trying extra hard to be absurd.

That's how I see this too. That kid is like 3 or 4. The rules are different for really young kids, especially on a holiday that's about wearing a costume. If he was 13 and wanted to wear the wings, a dress, and a pretty princess crown to school that's a whole different ball game.

What is it about the terms "3-year-old" and "costume" some people are having trouble with?
