Nope, not getting sucked into this debate again. I took a 3 week break from the boards after the "pink shirt" thread so I'm just going to quietly back away.....

This happens every year. In fact, at first I thought you were referring to something I read last year about parents' dilemna about whether or not to let their son wear a princess costume (to school, even). Here's my answer- if a little girl wanted to dress up like Buzz Lightyear and her parents allowed her, would anyone have a fit? Would anyone call her parents bad parents or claim that they were trying to make a political statement at their daughter's expense? Of course not. So why is it such a big deal for boys to want to wear a princess costume? The only explanation that I can come up with (and please, give me another one) is that it is okay for girls to want to be boys but not okay for boys to want to be girls because males are obviously superior to females. Get over it. It's Halloween. Dress up and have fun, regardless of your age.

Would I be upset if my son wanted to wear a princess costume.? Nope, not even a little.

I wouldn't be upset if DS wanted to wear a princess costume. I'd be worried about the reaction he'd get from others though.

I dunno. Tough call. DS wants to be Buzz Lightyear. Giggle, my DD insists on being Woody this year - mainly because she wants the hat. She thought we should get Buzz for DS (which I did because DS loves Buzz) anyway, DS will be 3 in a couple of weeks. He's worn DD's Princess dresses and tutus a few times. I don't care but DH thinks it's odd. And DH would have a fit if I actually BOUGHT a princess outfit for DS. ETA - next year DS will get to pick out his own costume. If he picks out something girly, I'll request that he look at all the other costumes before he makes a decision, same thing I did with DD this year after she picked out Woody. Because it's Halloween and they're kids. This isn't a battle that I, as a parent, have any interest in fighting.

Seriously?! That upsets people that a small child wanted to be something he is not (a princess) for Halloween? So when I dress up as a sexy pirate I really am one and people will fear I will steal their money and gold? When my parents dressed as each other (dad was a woman and mom was a man) that upsets people? They won best costume by the way. Mom and friends said my dad was the best looking woman there and there were some gorgeous women there. ETA: He probably thought he was some kind of bug with those wings. ;D

I am going to quote dark here "people be crazy"

I wouldn't let DS be a princess. If I had a daughter, I doubt I'd let her be a princess either.

In the 5th grade I dressed as a member of Kiss. My mom did the make-up for me. It was pretty cool...

but I have no issue admitting that the main reason I wouldn't let my boy be a princess is that being a princess is a girly thing and he'd get teased. And while I believe that men and women should be treated equivalently, we are NOT the same/interchangeable and I want to instill those values in my child(ren). Plus, princesses are dumb.... look at me, my family ruled over some people/I got a prince to put a ring on it!

Awesome! I love kids who dress up for Halloween!
And if he wanted to dress up as a Princess on any other day, so be it!

I kind of wonder this, too. FIL had a fit when I got my 3 year old DS a Barbie to play with - he wanted one. That lasted maybe a year. FIL thought I would 'make him gay.'
If I had a little girl and got her a truck, I don't think FIL would have noticed, and I don't think he would have thought I would make her gay - maybe just that I would turn her into a tomboy.
So either excuse - that boys will be weak like girls, or they will turn gay - not really buying it.

I wouldn't care about a Halloween costume, but no, I wouldn't like if my boys decided to wear girls' clothing. there was an article/blog, whatever about a guy in Germany who wore a dress bc his little son wanted to wear one. Everyone was posting about how sweet and noble it was. I guess we would just have to agree to disagree

Oh and as far as "princess" thing goes - I don't really care about the "princess" thing and have never been into fairtales and such, but I love love LOVE 17th, 18th, 19th century clothes. I love that style of women's dress, always have and if I wasn't so damn short, my wedding dress would be one of those "princessy" style dresses for sure!!

Princesses don't wear pants or have wings. Maybe the kid thinks he's a purple martin. Nothing wrong being a bird.

doesn't everyone have planned marriages for their kids??
No TAX! You are not PLANNING your kid's marriage! (or in your kids case you probably do...and will TELL them whom to marry) You are PAYING for the wedding!!! And you know exaactly what I meant. Do not change the subject...

That kid isn't even dressed a princess. I don't see no crown, or dress. He's obviously a fairy, and there are male and female fairies.
