Update: Well, we had a strong month with $3900 in savings but a big chunk of that came from Christmas money from DH's family that we got and decided to save. I did end up consolidating some accounts and moving some funds around due to paying of a loan of SL DH's and needing to replace my computer. Thus, my starting numbers look a little different but that's why. We should have a good month in February too since we're getting about $1800 back from the Feds. We do owe CA about $350 and I haven't decided if I'll just set that aside from the refund or use regular funds for it. I also haven't really decided what I'm going to do with our refund - whether I want to save it all or whether I want to use some for debt/fun. We still have at least a week to decide since we're not slated to get the refund until next Friday but I like to have a plan in place BEFORE the $ arrives since that makes it easier to ensure the $ gets used wisely. DH isn't much help since he usually just says to do what I think is best . sbcalimom 02/1/11 $3923.88; 01/01/11 $0 **note, I'm only tracking contributions again.

twinmama - You're still just a kid (said with love), you have a whole lifetime ahead of you to live, love and travel. I don't think I even owned a suitcase when I was your age! Your trip to Hawaii will be a wonderful opportunity to catch the travel bug! (Which, BTW, is waaaay different from the cruiseship travel bug which I understand usually comes with stomach cramps and the 'green apple quick-step', if ya know what I mean.) If I'm headed to Solvang, which regional airport is closest? (And don't say Vandenberg, I don't have that kind of security clearance.) Is that where the movie Top Gun supposedly took place? (And if you say you've never heard of Top Gun I will tease you unrelentlessly about being too young.)

Credit Card DOWN! Savings UP! I sent $100 to savings which is a major accomplishment this month. I am in paycheck transition between jobs and will receive two small checks in February and will be back on track in March! My direct deposit to savings starts on Feb 16 so I'm looking forward to that! Woo hoooo!!

I thought I would, too, SaverBee. I made ALL the family decisions single-handedly. I decided what we'd eat for dinner, what groceries we'd buy, what furniture we'd buy. Yet it was after one of my solo furniture shopping expeditions where I met up with the other side of the story. I had asked DH to come with me to pick out replacement dining room chairs (ours were hand-me-downs and ready for the trash heap). He said, "That's okay. Whatever you get will be fine". So I went, and bought chairs. SaverBee, before even 24 hours had passed DH opened up a mouth about those chairs. I was shocked, but learned a valuable lesson: It's easy to criticize. But difficult and time-consuming to share responsibility.
May you find a man who places a strong value on sharing responsibility.

norway i dont know if top gun was based/filmed here. but i believe the closest airport that is not LAX is in santa barbara. otherwise there is some small air strips in lompoc and santa maria but they just do charters from here to LA and las vegas. i want to go on a cruise, but that bug that you always hear about that strikes these ships kinda make me a little nervous to do that lol. i think next year DH and i are gonna try to do a cruise in alaska. who knows....
havent been able to put money away yet. school messed up DH GI bill so we wont get that til next month(which should be a large chunk of change because its 2-3months of back pay) and he just started the reserves and has to go to his first drill weekend this weekend and probably wont get paid til either the 15 of this month or next month and finally my DH gets his first paycheck today but it wont be much since he just started. oh, and we are stil waiting for my DH w-2 so i can file our taxes. he called his old boss and said he mailed them last sat, so they should be here today.
so with all that crap going on, if we are able to file at the beginning of this month, we should be able to put a little away into savings...yay!

Norway: Thanks for asking! It's AWESOME and totally worth the pay cut. I get to wear jeans every day; work 37.5 hours per week and the office is full of young professionals (architects) that love what they do. I have a lot to learn and the job does have its challenges. I am so happy to not be commuting 2 hours a day I can't even tell you. My only challenge is getting through February with limited paychecks due to the transition. I paid all the bills with my last check from my previous job and can smile at Mr. Cat for food and water so I think I'll make it. The best part is that I filled my car up with gas last Sunday and it's STILL almost full! Compared to 2- 3 full tanks per week that is a major savings right there. Lots of purrring here!

Thanks CaptainDuck! I sent some more money to savings but I'm giving full disclosure that I might have to take it back out again on 2-16-10 when I go home to see MomCat. If I get a week's check from the new job I won't have to touch it but...well...we'll just see. So for now...the number looks pretty.

Ok here it is: Goals for 2011 - Anything I can save I will save while I pay down my debt! At this point my saving plan consists of saving: - $130.00 bi-weekly in to ING. - $25.00 monthly in to an RRSP - 5% of my bi-weekly pay goes into a company pension fund (my contributions are matched by my employer) - any time my chequing account goes higher then $1500.00 I transfer into savings. So far my accounts look like this: Fund | Goals | Jan1st | Current | YTD | Spent | % Met | ING - ISA | $5,000 | $0 | $2,613 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | ING - USD | $0 | $0 | $123 | $0 | $0 | #DIV/0! | ING-Supply Teaching | $0 | $0 | $1,087 | $0 | $0 | #DIV/0! | ING - Tutoring | $0 | $0 | $1,141 | $0 | $0 | #DIV/0! | ING - Retirement | $0 | $0 | $62 | $0 | $0 | #DIV/0! | ING - TFSA | $15,000 | $0 | $7,480 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | Reg - USD | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 | $0 | #DIV/0! | REG - Retirement | $2,000 | $0 | $1,603 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | Total | $22,000 | $0 | $14,110 | $0 | $0 | #DIV/0! | |
Added everything to the table. I hope it works! bubbleepink: 05/02/2011 0.00 (05/02/11 64.14%)

I know that I have been a bit MIA lately...I have had a lot going on lately - just plain busy!
I have been saving though!!!
UPDATE: $3775 2/7/11 (Goal: $8000.00 12/31/11, 1/1/11 $0.00)
I can't wait to get my tax refunds to add to my EF! It is a lot more than I thought it was going to be.
And before anyone lectures me on loaning the govt money for a year - I am ok with it for now cause it is a little savings plan for me....I will fix that later.

Good Morning Women In Red Savers! I am home sick with not a lot to do, well, nothing I feel like doing anyway so I thought I'd run our numbers and see how we're doing as a 'family'. I usually only do this in June and December but I figured since I had the time... There are 29 of us that have posted our interest in tracking our savings goals here and 19 that have posted an update. Together as a group we have saved a total of $76,798.31! That's incredible considering that most of us have posted only one month's worth of savings. Imagine what we'll be able to do in a year! Keep saving those pennies, dimes, and dollars Ladies, they really add up!

Bubbleepink - thanks for asking about my day. This is my second day home sick and I'm not yet on the uphill climb so I may or may not be back to school on Friday. Fortunately it's just a sinus infection not the flu. I'm one of those people that just can't sit still and not accomplish something so it's killing me to just try to rest. I feel like I'm wasting time but I can only stay awake for about 3-4 hours before I have to take a nap. But, not being able to breathe thru my nose makes sleeping difficult. Lots of drooling involved. My kids were supposed to take a test yesterday so I should/could ask a co-worker to bring them over so I can start correcting but I doubt I'd get anything done, well, other than soaking their papers with germs. I had hoped to pull all the pants I own out of the closet, try them all on and thin them out. I'm not joking when I estimate I probably have over 50 pairs of pants. (I used to be a sales rep for a women's clothing line called Weekenders.) So far I'm still in my jammies so I may need to push the pants-thinning plan to tomorrow. It seems that 100 games of Spider Solitare has worn me out for today. Take good care of yourself, bubbleepink. My Mama says take it easy and drink lots of fluids. Sounds good to me.

So, I looked into some online savings accts since I had HSBC but they kept dropping their rates, I compared Ally and ING and it seems that Ally may actually be a better option for me right now since they compound interest I believe daily while ING is monthly and I dont even think HSBC compounded anything at all. We have our car loan through Ally since they bought out GMAC so I figured I could do my savings with them too after a little research.. Oh, we FINALLY were able to file our taxes and have a rather large refund coming around the 18th! YAY!

Good morning, everyone! How does one become a member of your savings board. My 2011 goal is small: I want to have $500 saved for Christmas 2011. I currently have a whopping $22 saved!

Welcome murphath! You are in the right place at the right time. Have you had a chance to look around our thread? You'll see that most of us have more than one goal we're saving for but your goal of having $500 saved up in time for Christmas is just perfect. You are welcome to make a table to post your progress, but you certainly don't have to. If you want to but aren't sure how the code works, I posted an example on Post #22 and there are lots of us here that could help, too. As your savings starts accumulating you'll want to post updates. You've probably seen some. They're set up like this: YourScreenName: today's date today's total (starting date starting total starting page) Yours would look like this today: murphath: 2/10/11 $22 (2/10/11 $22 WIRS7) Lets say in a month from now you save $50 more dollars, your next update would look like this: murphath: 3/1/11 $72 (2/10/11 $22 WIRS7) (The is the $50+ milestone smiley) You are welcome to post updates as often as you'd like and I'll add them to our running list on Page 1, Post #20. Feel free to ask questions as well as give your 2 cents about issues being tossed around. Let's see, what else might you want to know... other ladies? What have I forgotten?

Update: $3818 2/9/11 (Goal $8000 1/1/11 $0)
Still at the same point I was before - but hopefully at the end of the month I will be able to add a bit more. We are still working on the basement, but we are waiting for a heater to be delivered before we can truely move forward with the electrical. I am so impatient with these things cause I am so excitied to see the final product.
Apparently the tax refund is on hold because I itemize deductions. Why can't the government get their act together. Their stunts would have had them fired long ago in a regular business environment.
Maybe that is the area I should have gotten into - politics!
Oh well - hopefully it will be here soon.
Norway - thanks for the positive reinforcement!! I want to end up with $8000 at the end of the year extra after we are finished with the basement, so I am going to keep that goal for now. That will be more savings than I have ever had before. I can't wait to get there!!

FinanciallyfreeinBC 02/11/11 $48442.15 (01/02/11 $4,459.76 WIRS1) (already earmarked for RRSP’s or TFSA-$40 000)
Things have been a bit of an adjustment for me lately.
It is weird that I am only posting numbers every 2 weeks. DH’s new job pays the same day as mine now (instead of opposite weeks) so now I have to wait to post. I am not good at waiting and I like to post since that usually means progress! It also means I have to plan how much to have in the accounts to cover the automatic payments. As a base, I need $1300 every 2 weeks but that doesn’t count bills… I am going to have to work on that when I feel inspired. Until then, money goes into savings then sneaks back out to cover if we need it until I get a better “feel” for it all.
I am also adjusting to the fact that I can spend the occasional extra money and not get into a tizz about it. Seriously… I have bought some fancy tea and eaten out (small bills) a couple of times and I was getting bent about the whole thing. I had to say to myself “Really??? Cause haven’t you been putting about $1500 in savings bi-weekly now? Yes, you have much of your savings earmarked but do you really need to stress out if you don’t save the $39 000 in a year you had as a goal (since that is your estimate of what you saved/repaid/planned spent last year and you want to see if you can do it again)??” I guess that I am scared that if I allow myself an inch, I’ll take a mile and we’ll be in horrific debt again. I know it’s not logical… just another thing about my psyche I can’t explain.
Work is good. I haven’t been feeling all that well this week but managed to get through it and cancelled my extra work time today due to the lingering headache. Not even sure I am going grocery shopping! I may just head for the couch and have a nap, come to think of it!
Another thing I have been struggling with lately is feeling tired and stressed and at times frustrated, angry, sad etc about various things when I am thinking that I should (oooh there’s that word I am working on deleting from my vocabulary) be in a constant state of gratitude and joy that DH has a job, we are becoming financially aware and free and life is pretty good overall. It is another interesting look into my psyche that I feel like I have to feel happy/content all the time now. I know that being debt free and starting savings isn’t the end all be all in life but it has been such a huge goal for me/us that I think it’s going to take some time to sink in that we are doing ok!
Guess I better get an appt to buy RRSP's. DH will get his TFSA as soon as I get the new cheques with his legal name on them... that'll stop confusing me when I look at the accounts as they are right now with all of this lovely money sitting there... calling my name... for a white sandy beach... cabana boys.... (looks outside at the 4' + of snow and sighs longingly)
Gratitude-that we are blessed to have excellent family, great jobs, good friends, a nice warm house that is actually a retreat for me and fur kids!

I sense a theme... none of us like to wait, me included! twinmama can't wait until the 18th so she can get her big refund back... mak is eager for DH's bonus, their tax refund, AND a second payment towards The Cabin... (I'd LOVE to have a cabin, I'm living vicariously thru you!) cheerleadingmama can't wait for the IRS to get their act together! Will we EVER see that? And... financiallyfree is waiting for the cabana boy, uh, no, I, uh, mean... Sorry, I got sucked into your sandy beach scene. She's waiting for this new wonderful lifestyle of hers to settle in and feel normal. I agree, we all have some fantastic things coming in our future. Everybody else... chime in... what can't YOU wait for?? I'll go next - I can't wait for our 5-month bathroom remodel to finally get done! (February is month #18?) It's going to be so nice to have a bath tub again!
