Smite?? Am I the only one who had to look it up? : ) "to strike sharply or heavily especially with the hand or an implement held in the hand." And I don't think it's referring to a High 5. IMHO - we don't need this option. Are we not about positive support? I say we Exalt the heck out of each other and leave the Smiting to the folks on the Political boards. My mama taught me better... If you can't say anything nice... post it on FaceBook. (JK!!!) Later today..... OK, was I the only one to see the 'Smite' thingy? Now it's gone and I'm wondering if I have truly lost what was left of my mind. (I'm a middle school science teacher; I've already lost half my mind to begin with.)

Norway.....you aren't the only one who has seen it. They are talking about it on other boards but I haven't seen it. They say there is someone on YM that has -46,000 karma, what happens when someone smites you. It seems to be a game.
I agree with you.....we don't need it. The board is about support. Another Karma for you!

dragon2008 at least you had the money there for you to use so you didn't have to put it on a credit card. I call that a win even if it did bring your balance down a little! good job on having the money there!!

Okay, my excitement is eating at me and maybe some of you already started doing this, but I just can't resist! Okay, so I have decided, along with my hubby, that everytime we save money when we buy something, we put that difference in our EF acct. So, that means every time i use a coupon, get military discount, my military star discount on gas, and just regular sales, I will allocate those funds to my EF. I track everything with a spreadsheet and have so far saved YTD $259, of that I have transferred $60.15. But I just thought it would be a fun game to see how much money I can actually save by using those methods of savings I get on a regular basis! Also, with our "military raise" we got, I am sending that extra little bit to savings as well as the 2% FICA tax reduction. Those 2 little I guess you could call windfalls puts me at saving $70.11/mo alone and it doesn't affect me bcause I have already been living without that extra money to begin with. I just wanted to perhaps put some idea's in everyone's head about ways to save money!

I upped my 401k deduction by 1% today since I haven't done anything different since the tax reduction!

Hello all - On the one hand, 2011 is kindof kicking our rears thus far. DH has had a cold for 3+ weeks. Finally convinced him to go see a doctor - it wasn't a cold, it was bronchitis. I started poking around our tax information, and although I convinced DH to put some money in a traditional IRA for 2010, it looks as if we may not qualify for the deduction now. We got married in July 2010, and we're both covered by pension plans - so unless I'm missing something, we're out at least $600 that we should have gotten back for the deduction. On the other hand, this is all tempered by the fact that I just realized that since October 2010, DH and I have managed to save just under 11k. It's all ear marked for various things, but considering I'm still stunned at that number, I guess I should stop complaining. Even the 2% FICA tax we're seeing in our paychecks is going somewhere - straight into additional college savings for my step-son, but since he starts college this fall, it's pretty well timed. I convinced DH to allow me to have a dog trainer come over to help us with our rambunctious GSD. It's a little more expensive than I would like, but I've got OT pay coming which will cover the bill, and if the trainer helps, then it'll end up paying dividends in sanity! Anyway... that's where things stand with us. My goals for the month include hitting the gym 4 times a week (for the first time in years!), and learning to be satisfied with what we have. 2011 Accounts | Goal | 1/6/2011 | 1/27/2011 | Need | Saved | | 2010 IRA - DH | $5,000.00 | $2,200.00 | $2,200.00 | $2,800.00 | 44.00% | | 2010 IRA - Me | $5,000.00 | $400.00 | $400.00 | $4,600.00 | 8.00% | | New Car | $5,000.00 | $1,100.00 | $1,406.20 | $3,593.80 | 28.12% | | Short Term | $3,000.00 | $2,000.59 | $2,000.59 | $999.41 | 66.69% | | House DP | $20,000.00 | $0.00 | $1,800.00 | $18,200.00 | 9.00% | | Total | $38,000.00 | $5,700.59 | $7,806.79 | $30,193.21 | 20.54% | |

Well here is my update for January - so far the savings year is off to a slow start. We had to use the credit card some in December and I want that paid off before much else so savings are just creeping along a bit. I also just paid off all CC's except for partial one which now has a balance of $470, I will be racing that in this thread. I recently changed my 401k contributions to 8%. Feels so good to be making so much progress. I have been doing the envelope system for my budget and have actually stayed under my budget so far with money left over.

You guys are off to a great start.
I'm still waiting for the last bit of Dr bills from LO's birth. :sigh: I wish they would hurry up and get here so I could move on to paying off something else, and start my savings plan.

I start my new job on Monday (no commute...umm...yeah!!!) and I set up my direct deposit to send $125 per paycheck to my savings at the credit union. It's only $250 per month but it is a start and I'm still trying to pay off my last credit card. First deposit will be Feb 16...can't wait to watch the savings numbers go UP! UP! UP!

Here's my first update for January. I saved $10,500 last year (reached in December) which I have not touched, but do not count for this year's goals. Patchwork150 01/29/11 $787.29 (01/04/11 $0 WIRS2)
Account | Goal 2011 | Start 01/2011 | Current 01/29 | Left to Save | %Goal Met | Christmas '11 | $600.00 | $0.00 | $600.00 | $0.00 | 100.00% | Vacation Fund | $1,000.00 | $0.00 | $187.29 | $812.71 | 18.73% | House Fund | $5,000.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $5,000.00 | 0.00% | Total | $6,600.00 | $0.00 | $787.29 | $5,812.71 | 11.93% |

I could have made a TON more progress- like $1,591.61 more this month, if I hadn't had to spend it on school. I got a lot of overtime this month, a great bonus, a tiny raise, christmas $ gifts, taxes back from NY form 2007 (long story), etc. But, hey- I spent it on books, parking permits, and some of my tuition so I can't complain really. Here's to a great January- let's hope it continues to go great in Februrary! ;D

Ladies, On page 1, post 20 I've updated smilies for those who have posted totals lines. For being just 29 days into the new year we are moving along wonderfully! bschoolbound, shelby - if you'd like me to track your updates too, please add a summary line to your posts. dragon2008 - I know exactly how you feel! I know it's no consolation but I agree with the other gals in congratulating you on having some money earmarked for vehicles in the first place. bschoolbound - Welcome! This is a great board full of outstanding women who are eager to cheer you on and celebrate your successes. I'm glad you mentioned upping your contribution, I have been thinking about it but put it on the back burner. twinmama - What a great savings-game idea! Thank you for sharing, it's something I think I might try. A karma point for you! tobinikui - You have made some amazing gains since October, congrats! And, you seem to be well on your way to success this year, too! kansas - I wouldn't call 39% of your goal a slow start! You are doing awesome, girl! shelby - You are knocking our socks off! At this rate you'll meet your goals in just a few months, what else might you want to save for? Time to put your dreams on your to-save-for list. You can do it! mak - I'm always so glad to see people saving for an EF. You are doing yourself a huge favor. I am proud of you. Happycat - Best of luck with the new job starting Monday and your savings plan is to be commended! I'm happyhappyhappy for you! Patchwork - Education is an investment in yourself, worthy of every penny. You'll shine in February, I know it.

FinanciallyfreeinBC 01/28/11 $46 736.61 (01/02/11 $44 222.72 WIRS1)
So, we are working on a TFSA for DH. He goes by his middle name and that is what is on our cheques but we have to have his legal name on the cheques so cheque order went in and when they come, we’ll be able to get him started.
I have no idea how much DH will be making at the new job and for some weird reason, he is reluctant to talk to his new employer about it after the first time he asked. We have an “approximate” figure and they can’t “cheat” him since they are union but I am a bit of a control freak and want to know, darn it!
One of my goals is to put as much money away per month as possible… I am kind of thinking we may be able to bank DH’s cheque and live on my income. I have crunched the numbers in a loose sort of way and we come up short but right now, we are definitely ahead in the paycheque saving. My goal is at least $2500/month. Guess we’ll see once life/car/house insurances come up since those are NOT cheap. Gak!
I am still waiting for my friend to pay me back what she owes. I know she now has a renter in the upstairs of her house. I am very happy for her since this will really put her on the path to debt repayment (I hope) and we had a HUGE talk about that on our road trip last summer. I was hoping that she’d send me post dated cheques and I could add them to our savings but that doesn’t seem to be happening. That’s another thing I guess I will have to wait and see. I know the money will come. I am totally sure of that! I know she has other things on her plate too.
I am happy that DH is in agreement with me that the money we get back from taxes this year (after buying RRSP's) will go into savings. It won't be millions but it'll help!
Gratitude-quiet days at home, extra work for me that helps our bottom line but still leaves me with days off, wine, an amazing DH who has shovelled snow from behind my car and off the path to the house when it a) snowed a crazy amount (about 40 cm +) and b) when we had +5C weather and much of it melted off the roof and fell in inconvenient places!

Okay, I just have to get this savings moving along. This is my EF and I need to get it up to about $40,000 eventually. That would give me my 6 - 12 month cushion that I absolutely need since I am the sole supporter in my household.
I have been working on paying off debt and still have 1 CC and a HELOC to take care of. I have a plan in place to finish this off by Jan 2012. I also have some money set aside in another account to handle minor household emergencies, so here goes.......

1/30/11 3818.00 (Goal 8000.00 1/1/11)
I want to have a total of $8000.00 by the end of 2011. In the mean time we are working on finishing our basement. We are working on a guest room, guest bathroom, office, bar and TV room. We are hoping that we can have that pretty much finished by the end of 2011. The basics anyway. So my savings will fluctuate. We are doing ALL of it ourselves. And we are using all of the leftover materials from when we built our house...we are also using left over materials from some of our friends buildings as well. Nothing will go to waste. The only thing we need to purchase is 2x4s and drywall....which certainly is an expense, but we have doors and paint and trim and wiring and lots of other things. I am excited about the amount we are starting with....we are saving ourselves and any money we get that is extra we are adding to the pot as well.
Here is to a good February 2011....gotta keep plugging away!!

Kansas, Thanks but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention they are some of the lowest of all my categories. Some people call it snowballing, I call it picking the lowest hanging fruit is the easiest. I have to get my rear in gear for saving for the trip to Solvang. I need to be making my reservations ASAP!

I'm using the same strategy as S4N this year and tackling the small fry goals first and managed to get 3 roses using this method! my next rose will probably take a couple of months but it's nice to be able to cross some goals off the list already! I don't need the roses to maintain my motivation (that's the purpose of the total saved %). I'd rather each fund get a little bit each month than for one or two funds to get a lot of money. I suppose it's the baby-stepper in me .

Norway When is that event in Solvang going to be? I am about 25 miles from Solvang and have yet to go there, heard its a cute little Dutch town but been too busy to make the drive. Rant:: so my husband is prior military and gets a GI while hes full time student...well the stupid school took too long to send the paperwork in to the VA so now instead of getting a deposit we were supposed to get in 2 days, we aren't getting anything!! I was depending on that money to pay bills and put some money away, but now we are so tight that we had to resort to the cc because we have only $60 in our EF but on the bright side, I just need one more W-2 that should be coming in this week and I will be able to file my taxes as well has we should get about 2-3 months GI Bill back pay in March so we shall see how things go. Stupid school

Hey, twinmama16, do you live in Santa Barbara?
That's my hometown, though I've lived in Israel longer than I lived there. My aged parents still live in S.B., though they may be moving to an assisted living community near my sister in Mission Viejo.
