"Not necessarily. Whites aren't the only target of racism"
So you're saying that whites CAN be victems of racism? But the definition you gave pretty much said whites cannot. I'm confused as to what you're saying.
"And on a sociological topic like racism, I'm not sure Webster's is the ultimate authority..."
*sighs* I think I'm coming up with a new rule on posting here. I'm not going to research or cite any references. Whenever I do people dismiss them so why take the time?

I prefer doctors of a particular race. IMO the ones I have gone to were superior and were the only ones to diagnose a problem I had. I went to 8 doctors since I was a kid until this person figured it out (as did his nurse). I also had a very successful surgery from a doctor of that race (when younger) and had many experiences like that. I don't only go to doctors of that race but when I don't already have one and don't know anything about any of them from friends or neighbors I will now pick the race I've found to be superior in my experiences. Am I a racist? Actually there are two races I prefer if I don't know any in that field.

But it's hard to be the "victim" of racism when you are a member of the race that - in general - has enjoyed the most privilege in our past (and modern) society... And you should know that I dismiss the Webster's definition on general principle - it's nothign personal. Just a bias since I've read WAY too many briefs/papers that start, "Webster's defines [subject] as _____... I agree/disagree because..."

It's sad and funny at the same time to see them competing for the same resources.

Not really. If you get your ass kicked by a disgruntled minority because you're white and he's pissed off that the white man is keeping him down, then you're a victim of racism. It doesn't matter what society as a whole is doing. If there's somebody that hates you because of your skin color you're a victim of racism. There are racist white folks, racist black folks, racist yellow folks, and if there were blue skinned folks at least some of them would hate people of different colors too.
In terms of the broader society I think the sweet spot right now is being a white woman. You're counted as a minority while still enjoying the baked in privileges of being white. There are resources to help you get a higher education, companies are going out of their way to hire and promote women to show how open minded they are, and the racists in the white community (which still has a huge advantage in things like business ownership and whatnot) don't have a problem with your skin color.

I think affirmative action is reverse racism.

In what way is your world limited? ------------- Hmmmm....good question. I don't know any meth heads. I don't know any Mormons or Amish. I don't know anything about the assorted "Housewives" of whatever county is the flavour of the day. When I browse through a People magazine at the checkout counter, I have no clue who most of those people are.

Oh good call on the Amish. As somebody that's lived entirely on the Western side of the Mississippi I've only ever seen Amish people on TV. I grew up around a good amount of Mormons though. I didn't know jack about their religion, and didn't even know they had a new new testament, or I would have asked them more about it. At the time I figured they were just another flavor of Christianity that was pretty much indistinguishable from the others. Come to think of it, I still don't know what the difference is between protestants, lutherans, presbyterians, etc.

Well, if you spent more time watching "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" and other reality shows you could expand your horizons. ;D

I'm not boohooing. Americans (of all colors) have it pretty easy compared to the rest of the world. However, I think white females probably have it a little easier than most right now.

Obviously I did not express myself well. I am white and middle class. I exist in a city and state with few minorities. I wish I (and my children) had more exposure to persons of different races and differenct ethnic and economic backgrounds. My world is much too homogenous.

I got the gays and the Mexicans and the whites. But there are only like 50,000 black folk in the whole state - so I don't get a lot of exposure to them there people.

That's what I hated about where we used to live. I don't think homogeny does my kids any favors.

Familiarity breeds contempt, so kids raised in a rich white bubble should be the most open minded... right?

I'm sorry, I thought we were all educated enough to know that racism can come from all quarters. It's institutional racism that worries me more and that, in the US, tends to penalize minorities. Emphasis on "penalize," because next the white folk wkll start boohooing affirmative action and programs designed specifically to aid minorities. I know some of you fundamentally believe that is penalizing you somehow, but since you're still the advantaged ethnicity in this country you really don't have a leg to stand on.

*shrugs* I don't think homogeny is necessarily bad or limits you as a person. Though I can understand why some find it preferable. I never saw the point in trying to seek it out. I'm not out to prove to anyone who "diversified" or "cultured" I am. I never looked at diversity like "I need X% of black people and X% of Asians" in my life/workplace/church whatever.
Usually in the end, you find out they're just like you anyway. Or at least you have more alike than different.

"I wish I (and my children) had more exposure to persons of different races and differenct ethnic and economic backgrounds." I think the more interesting question is why do you think exposure to different races or ethnic groups would enrich your life? "Why would it be preferable?" That's the question I just posed to you and lynherself Why do YOU want to get more exposure to different folks?

Because it's valuable to know of of cultural norms that aren't your own. Otherwise you're at risk of being a bit small-minded, I think. Your turn

The food is better. White folks eat predominately bland food. Other than that I haven't noticed much difference.

The music is better too. Except for Asians and west Indians. Their music is god awful.
