"Well just my opine here, but there is a vast difference between seeking high dividends based on Yield and seeking them based off of Amount per share." I completely agree with this statement (well, except for the fact that "opine" is a verb, not a noun, but whatever ;-) ). What I will never understand is your opinion that the amount per share (regardless of the cost of the share) is superior to yield, let alone relevant. Ergo, a $0.50/yr dividend on a $10 share is a decent return. A $0.50/yr dividend on a $100 share is nothing. But they are both the same amount per share. Yield is the only valid measure of a dividend's return to the investor.

Let me re-phrase using multiplication. A $2/yr dividend on a $40/sh stock is a decent return (though probably not enough to keep up with inflation); a $2/yr dividend on a $400/sh stock is nothing.
I didn't argue against using long-term history of paying dividends as being a worthwhile consideration, nor against a history of raising dividends. Both of those tactics would be beneficial in the decision making process. It's only the proposition that dividend payout per share is a valid selection criterion without taking into account the price of the share that I argue against. Dividend yield takes that into account.
The SEB you discussed in your thread is a perfect example of this. SEB sells for $2469.00/sh (close today), yet historically pays a measly $3.00/yr dividend. The gains you detailed virtually all came from capital gains, not from clipping coupons. The yield is 0.1% -- even your broker is giving you about that for cash. Ten years ago when the stock was $200/$300 per share, that was a poor return. At the price the stock is today, it's inconsequential. I do wonder why they paid that $6.75 dividend last December and have paid nothing since. They used to pay the $0.75 every quarter like clockwork. SEB is/was a growth stock, the dividends were never relevant to the return on investment. Their long-term history of paying dividends seems to have picked up a hitch in its get-along. Might be good, might be bad, if they pay another $6.75 this coming December it'll at least be better than they used to do. But even then, the dividend aspect will be a piss-poor investment.

Thanks for the kudos when I was doing well!
Actually, I would love to see a game that will do it right! I don't put myself thru keeping up with all the dividends that my stock in the game has earned. I also had one go to 0 that changed names, the stock didn't really go down!
I was also trying to buy some stuff on Fri. before everything started back up & the game was "unavailable"....soooooo??? I could do the whole order but when I went to place it....it wouldn't go thru! I was royally ticked off!
I realize that I'm not as serious as most of you fellas, but I enjoy trying to see how well I do compared to yours. I've made a couple of real booboos this year but have been able to come back some! I would love to be included in another game if anyone does one!

It will be 6 months before this game gets over. Maybe in that time frame we can find a better place to run one for next year. We all have the same problems with the game and we all have to live with what it gives us.

I'm thinking of closing all my positions that are reported improperly just to avoid having to recalculate based on market values. At this point there are three main inputs to consider.
1) The value of FRFHF.PK, I'm actually showing a slight profit on this position rather than the 100% loss showed by the game, 2) The value of the HMPR short, I'm actually up 60% on this position rather than up 100% like shown by the game 3) The value of my KHDHF.PK spinoff shares from Terra Nova.
I think overall (aside from dividends) my returns are understated by around $70,000.

Nope, in real life I wouldn't have $2,000,000.00 to play with! ;D
I still enjoy it and have picked up some good things by watching what some of you other players do. So it is still educational for me & fun to play with imaginary money!

That's the plan. The sell off let me get a better entry point which let me regain that % loss quickly. Averaging down does have its advantages when you have good stocks that are growing. Patience is a Virtue. Should be applied in any long term Port

I invest in the game like I would be investing in real life. There are several securities I'm interested in that the game won't let me buy, but these would probably be fairly small positions anyway.

She is looking at Aug 2 or before. The funny thing about that date is for most of the people in the World is that it IS just another day, Life goes on, who cares. Will the US pay its debt on time? YES it will and there will be a budget in place soon afterward if there isn't one in place before.

Sorry Ty, wrong scenario for me!
I'm just going with what I feel (we women get to do that) from what I am seeing happening around me. Too many farmers in my area are going to have WAY reduced crops (drought) if they have one at all and others are plowing veggie fields under cause with our new immigration law in Ga., the illegals are staying away. Too many other things going on in the world that can cause some real problems too.
I hadn't even thought about Aug. 2 in relation to the game. I've quit following the news on it cause they can't make up their minds!
We need a TOTAL house cleaning in Washington!

I agree with the Total house cleaning in Washington. Crop production is going to be tight this year. A lot of problems facing us this year. We have no control over Weather, we have to take what it gives us. We do have control over our Budgets to some degree. Earnings have been coming in at a very good pace, I would like to see Oil and Gas prices to come down but only higher production will cause that and Demand decreases. I don't see that is going to happen in the near future. So what do you do. Uncertainty is a Killer. I hope we can CLEAR that one up real quick. JMO

Your right Ty earnings have been strong, but I also agree with kadee. That's what makes me think the markets will still be up for the year, but the moderate economic news will make it so the GS call of 14,500 is off.

If beef does skyrocket like your saying, that will cut into the bottom line of businesses like MCD, YUM and others. Good trend to watch if your holding those.

From what I am seeing here in rural Texas, beef prices are going to be real low for a while, perhaps a year. lots of people selling cattle and breeding cows to the feed lots since they have no grass and can not afford to feed them. In about a year or so watch out for the beef prices to skyrocket. If I actually knew something about cattle futures it might be a time to make some money. I will leave the futures to the professionals. We have several in my area that are culling their herds and a few have already sold out!....getting out of the cattle business! So yes, the price of beef should be going up before too long. Maybe even as soon as this winter depending on hay production.

I have a limit buy order in for BRFS, hoping for a pullback if the next couple of weeks of politics crashes the world markets. If Brazil doesn't crash along with the rest (might be thought of as a "safe-haven" by some) I might chase this stock in a couple of weeks after the dust settles. What's bad for the US beef industry often proves to be good for South America's.

You want to watch the Feeder calf futures. That will be where it shows up first. It takes two years from birth to market. Most cows have already had there calves by now so next spring you will know how many calves have hit the ground. Cow numbers this fall should be a good indicator of what is happening. JMO
