I should probably do likewise since the entire basis of the portfolio I'm using in the game is dividend return (except for a week or so ago when I took a flyer into QID/QLD that lost me a catastrophic $20k in a few days!). I hope I've got them all: | Total | $85,891.50 | Date | Ticker | Div Amt | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
Well, that table appears to be a mess, so I'll just try a copy/paste and hope it comes out legible. I'll mess with the formatting of the table sometime later when I have the time. Total $85,891.50 Date Ticker Div Amt 12/23/10 NLY $17,600.00 12/29/10 MFA $14,030.00 12/23/10 ANH $15,040.00 12/27/10 AGNC $11,900.00 02/08/11 EVN $1,760.00 02/10/11 CLCT $1,332.50 03/08/11 EVN $1,760.00 03/14/11 PTNR $4,400.00 03/10/11 FDI $3,230.00 03/10/11 CLCT $5,973.00 03/29/11 NLY $8,866.00

meh...now that I'm down to#4 I need to start counting up my dividends I'm still happy with my 8%+ dividends for the year. Think I could move into negative territory when TTT posts earnings shortly which I think will be bad (based on the Canoro investment which is going south.) This doesn't impact my long term investment view, and I'm trying to emulate my long term strategy in this game even though I do better at times while trading.

My port is also very volatile. I've been lucky that the up days have been greater than the down days. LOL This has been the Best Q for the index's in the past 12 years and to be above them, I think is pretty good at this point in time. It's when the Market is going down and you still can squeak out a gain is when you are doing something. Hard to do.

Actually, a downward trend might help capital gains on the kinds of things I've got in this model port (none of which I have in real-money ports right now). Some of these big dividend payers might be the place that folks run. Especially if interest rates on fixed income bonds and such remain low. For that to happen, inflation can't pick up much so that the Fed cuts back on their injection of money, and the market would have to get spooked. Though, as well as the stock market has held up to plenty of scary recent world events, it's hard for me to figure out what might spook it. Still, there are whole sectors that, in my opinion, have gotten mighty pricey; all it will really take is for more folks to decide they want to sell than other folks are deciding to buy. As usual, it probably won't really have a reason (though the talking heads will blame something as being the straw that broke the camel's back) -- it'll just appear out-of-the-blue and whack us alongside the head.

I've been trying to create a portfolio that I think can give me good long term gains that hopefully won't get totally crushed in a market downturn. TTT is quite volatile, so I could see the company getting hammered. However, the company has managed to produce good absolute returns even during the 10 year flat market. Hopefully it can remain intact in a downturn. The company has a huge cash position, but is looking at levering the company to make an acquisition. I think this could create huge shareholder value if the right acquisition is made. Michael Smith was talking on the CC today about levering up to buy a company at no more than 60% of liquidation value.
ENH did better than the market in the last downturn. Hopefully this will continue.
Fairfax Financial is pretty heavily hedged, and trades at around book value. Again, there's some downside, but hopefully less than the market.
I think PM/MO will outperform the market if we go into a big reversal.

I don't plan to try to ride out a major downturn. I'll be cash and short. I know a lot of folks think that can't be done. All I can say is that they're wrong. I won't get out at the absolute top, nor back in at the absolute bottom, but it's not necessary to do so. All one needs to miss is the majority of the plunge.

I bought a position of BRKB in the VSE game. Again, trying to remain cautiously long and think that BRKB is probably a fair price at this time. I don't own BRKB in my personal account because I think I can do better.

Well I didn't do so hot in the market today, but who cares. I get to get skiing tomorrow I don't get to go skiing a lot, I know DW begrudges me the opportunity to some extent. I could just give up practicing law to ski all day. Perhaps I could give cards to people getting injured on the slopes, and then sue the resort?

I think now is a good time to open a position in TTT. Since the company is over 50% of my portfolio (game and real life) I'm gonna be holding steady for now Still, I'd like to invest a lot more money around the current price (as we speak we're trading at $7.95) and let diversification be damned. Again my goal is to develop large positions in good investments as I find them. Even though my TTT position is a large % of my portfolio it's still under $30,000. I feel like a $100,000 investment in TTT around $8 (or lower would be better) could help me reach a lot of my financial goals if this investment goes the way I think it could.

Unc, I have had no problem. See if Think You Got Game 2 is anywhere on the page, if not just enter that and see what happens. If you have trouble, go to page 1 of this thread for the details.

Cummins is a great stock to own. Yes, it's been up and down so far for most of the players but that is why I like that word " Patience". I still think most of my Oil Picks will be up 30 to 40% by the end of the year. XOM is reporting next week with the rest of them the following. XOM should set the tone of things to come.

Big Caps are ALWAYS looking for more Reserves and you have to look at where they are at. So that tells me that in the future they will start to be a buyer of those Reserves.

wxyz, You're smoking right now. Even when I add in my missing 2%+ in dividends I'm lagging at least 2-3% right now.
What I love about this year's performance is that I'm sitting on about a 12% gain (including dividends) and still feel the portfolio is undervalued.
