Well, this is what happens when your country is founded by Puritans. ETA: And I think your brother was the breaking the annoying habit, Beth.

Can you imagine how Puritans would freak now? I'm conservative and they'd burn me at the stake!

No pierced ears for a daughter? Swamp, I don't recall. Does your DD have pierced ears? Mine doesn't. I figured when she's old enough to ask/maintain, we'll do it. Not yet. She's never asked to have it done. she seems interested in my pierced ears, but I don't think she's realized she can have hers done. She's a drama queen, so I really don't want to to it and have to listen to the screaming when it's done and when I clean them. I'll probably let her do it when she's old enough to take care of them herself

You mean does it mean anything culturally offensive to wear socks that don't match? Yep. Thanks for putting it better than I did.

So it looks like people are interpreting the religion incorrectly (again ).

Yeah, that's more or less what I thought when he told us. I think they did major cities and Lake Como.

Now I'm curious about the socks? Does it mean anything to wear mismatched ones or is it just a funny quirk? In Italy, of course. Here, it's a funny quirk unless there's a new school code I don't know of.

Swamp, I don't recall. Does your DD have pierced ears? Mine doesn't. I figured when she's old enough to ask/maintain, we'll do it. I had mine pierced for my 8th Birthday. I started begging my Mom to let me get them done when I saw a girl in kindergarten with them pierced but she felt the same way -- I could get them done when I could take care of them. DD has no interest in having hers pierced yet, but my niece had hers done at 7 and they closed up because she had a meltdown when they tried changing her earrings the first time (she did have them re-pierced at 9 and has taken care of them without issue). DD just turned 7 and could care less about hygiene so she is still a tad young, IMHO. I had my DD's done about six months old. I asked her Ped and she told me when to do it. I think it was after she had had most of the baby shots. She said they almost never have any problems from them when they are done that young. Truthfully after they did it I dabbed "stuff" on each earlobe for about ten days and twisted them around once or twice a day. That was it. I never worried or did anything with them. As far as she knew she didn't have anything different so she never touched them. I don't think I even changed them for months. I might have chaned them a few times a year for a holiday or picture maybe then put the gold ball studes back in.

This whole thread makes me think of the Generation Gap. You know, how the older folks complained about beatnik hair, hippy hair, 80's spikes and big hair, etc. Every generation seems to have their hair "issue", LOL. I say let her do it. But, just in case, be prepared for future requests for even more creative style changes. And, FWIW, my ODS has been rocking an awesome mullet since February. He plays lacrosse and wanted the "lettuce" to curl out from the back of the helmet but didn't want to deal with long hair under the helmet. His hair stylist really struggled to cut that mullet, LOL. ODS would have had the best lacrosse hair this summer, but some kid with really awesome dreads beat him to it.

Beth, Italians are not really conservative at all. Yes, it is a Catholic country, but...they are a lot less conservative than Americans. They think nothing of standing on their balcony buck ass naked. They go topless at the beaches. They have legalized prostitution. They drink A LOT, smoke A LOT.....I think their form of Catholic is much more "liberal" than US? I don't know. They just aren't uptight about the same things that Americans are. How do they feel about unmatching socks? My older brother took his dd to Italy as part of a v-ball tourney thing a couple of years ago and he insisted on breaking her of the unmatching socks before going. And being careful of what she wore because of being the visiting Americans or something I never really understood. Was he right or just using it as an excuse to break her of a habit he found annoying? Hahahah...I can HONESTLY say, the whole matching or unmatching sock conversation has never come up with my Italian family! I am meeting Mario for drinks later...I will ask him!
