Don't worry... Our odd looking non-'normal' kids will save yours from the zombie apocalypse... 'normal' insofar as it is even definable, is highly overrated.... LOL!

Everyone follows fads to some extent. Societies view of "good" or acceptable hair changes over time. Dudes in this country used to wear white and gray curled wigs, which look itchy as hell.

Well, in my defense, I only know 4. Two couples. No, I don't know which is the dominant partner as they all 4 look alike to me. I know the thread has moved on, but REALLY?

Why are you surprised? I'm conservative about a lot of things. Yes, there are bad influences from people with nice hair but realistically, haven't we all said, right or wrong, you are judged on how you look? Why would I want my child judged or my parenting judged by allowing my child to hang with those who don't follow acceptable behaviors? I still remember the junior in high school who came to class sporting a multi colored Mohawk. He shot his mouth off big time about how his parents didn't control him. Well, he lost his car, he lost his girlfriend, and he sure kept his hair, for a little while anyway. The school also got involved, he wasn't suspended but it was made clear that both styles had to go ASAP for him to stay in.

And if they had other ideas would it be worth the fight to force them to conform to your standards? Yes until they are 18 and living on their own Exactly!

I haven't read the entire thread yet, but wanted to say that when I was 13 my mom sent me off to church camp and I came back with half my head shaved! Hahah. My group of friends got tired of being told how "good Christian ladies should behave." so we locked ourselves in our cabin and shaved half of our heads. Our parents were called...we were allowed to stay (probably in hopes that they could pray the devil out of us).
Thankfully my mother realized it was just hair. She allowed me to color it whatever color I wanted and didn't' totally have a meltdown over my shaved head. I let my kids choose their hairstyles. My boys have pretty much had long hair since they were in 3rd or 4th grade. They are now in 7th and 10th. My 17 year old daughter and I will be getting our noses pierced within the next few weeks. I will probably let Her Royal Highness get hers pierced when she is 12...we will see about her attitude though.

Okay, let me rephrase that to say I only know of four women who have admitted being lesbians as in they are obvious with their partners. I'm sure I know some that are passing as straight but aren't. None of the gay women and plenty of the straight women give a crap about their hair and it shows. So be it. Not my hair and I don't pay their bills. Nor am I involved in their lives except for simply knowing them by name and seeing them around various places and functions as in we say "hi" when we meet.

My philosphy on stuff like this for a possible kid is nothing permanent until you're 18 (no piercings or tattoos). After that you're an adult and can do whatever you want. Hair grows back so sure, experiment away. No pierced ears for a daughter? Swamp, I don't recall. Does your DD have pierced ears? Mine doesn't. I figured when she's old enough to ask/maintain, we'll do it.

Mmmm... lip piercings... Df had two. I used to love when he was deep in thought he'd move his upper lip over the lower and move the rings around. Sexy... I think they're kind of creepy, to be honest. but to each their own!

I told mine 12 and when she was 12 she wasn't in the mood. When she was 13 she had a bad day at school and was in the mood. But I had the same idea, she had to be old enough to care for them. I still remember the huge fight my friends had when his wife came home with the baby's ears pierced. I thought he was going to hit her he was so angry over it. My kids and I left because we didn't want to be there and we were supposed to stay for dinner. I think that scared us all. Yes, they are divorced now. I'm surprised they stayed married as long as they did.

Beth, many Italian women have their noses pierced. Actually, they are a lot less conservative about piercings than Americans are. Many men here have their ears gauged. I told my boys they could get their ears pierced, but that they are not allowed to have gauged ears in my house. Told my girls that too.

Interesting. I wonder why I assumed they'd be more conservative than us. Guess that shows you can't/shouldn't assume anything...

I had mine pierced for my 8th Birthday. I started begging my Mom to let me get them done when I saw a girl in kindergarten with them pierced but she felt the same way -- I could get them done when I could take care of them. DD has no interest in having hers pierced yet, but my niece had hers done at 7 and they closed up because she had a meltdown when they tried changing her earrings the first time (she did have them re-pierced at 9 and has taken care of them without issue). DD just turned 7 and could care less about hygiene so she is still a tad young, IMHO.

Lots of cultures pierce the ears of infants before they are a year old. I think it is something worth discussion, but in all honesty for some people it would be so normal they wouldn't even think twice about it. I didn't with my kids, but Romanians generally do. It does make some sense as the hole are permanant before the child is even aware, and less infection as the parents care for the holes...
Can you reverse gauging? ... again i think that would more fall under the permanant type thing that should wait till your 20s...

I wondered that about gauging too, oped. My guess is that they'd cut off most of the droopy part and re-attach part to make a new lobe.

Beth, Italians are not really conservative at all. Yes, it is a Catholic country, but...they are a lot less conservative than Americans. They think nothing of standing on their balcony buck ass naked. They go topless at the beaches. They have legalized prostitution. They drink A LOT, smoke A LOT.....I think their form of Catholic is much more "liberal" than US? I don't know. They just aren't uptight about the same things that Americans are.

Oped, from what I understand you can get the holes sewed back shut...or have some kind of plastic surgery done to close them. But you are left with a giant scar.

It doesn't look that terrible being old and having gauged. Gives you more character.

Doesn't it remind you of the old National Geographics with the native women with boobies down to their navels?

How do they feel about unmatching socks? My older brother took his dd to Italy as part of a v-ball tourney thing a couple of years ago and he insisted on breaking her of the unmatching socks before going. And being careful of what she wore because of being the visiting Americans or something I never really understood. Was he right or just using it as an excuse to break her of a habit he found annoying?

Everywhere is more liberal than the US... we like to talk about our free society, but we are generally speaking as far as 'societal norms', the most prudish, uptight lot... which is another issue contributing to the idea that we are 'growing dysfunction'... its like the proliferation of psych pharma... we have this odd, instatutionalized idea of what is 'right and normal and good' ... which is completely fabricated and unachieveable for the most part, and when people deviate from it these days they are considered 'abnormal', and either ridiculed or medicated...

You mean does it mean anything culturally offensive to wear socks that don't match?
