Uh. ..if you want to be treated like a normal person then why are you dressing like that? Peopel form their opinions in the first 20 seconds they meet you and those first 20 seconds of taking in your appearance is a doozy. That's what it all boils down to. I believe that I should be treated as a normal person with respect even if you think I look like a freak. You can judge me and vice versa. Can't stop that if we tried. However, it's how we ultimately treat each other that is important.

OMG, my mom said the SAME thing and I told my DD the SAME thing as well. She thinks her water was drugged at a country western place because she is always the designated driver so she drinks water there and felt woozy after drinking it again because she left it to dance. Someone else had to drive home that night and they all left early because of her being sick. She told me and then said she knew better because I had always told her that and she did it just that one time and look what happened. Thank GOD she was with good girls.

Of course I would, I've been taught manners. The only two people I give my unasked for opinion on stuff like that is my kid and my husband. If you don't ask I am not going to say anything.
My point is though it shouldn't be that shocking if you have a giant barbell hanging out your nose that people's reactions aren't always favorable. Getting angry about it and mad at me for raising an eyebrow is stupid. You chose to get a giant barbell in your nose, if you don't want raised eyebrows don't get a giant barbell in your nose.
The peopel I knew who had multiple piercings were fine with it. When need be they took it out. They never said a peep about stares/comments because they were comfortabel in their skin.
If you aren't comfortable enough in your own skin to handle the reaction taht comes with the barebell then you should pass.

Yes, the black hair thing all happened at a slumber party. I'll bet that mom caught hell for letting all those girls do that. I was more disgusted with the idea that her pretty hair was damaged. It took almost a year to get that crap out of her hair and hundreds of dollars to fix it. I made her swear to never ever let anyone but a professional touch her hair again.

But you are right, the idea that a half a dozen girls were all non-conforming at the same time is pretty funny. So is blonde roots growing out.

Well...this is my 2 cents. This country is a melting pot though full of opportunities. Somehow people do not seem willing to make right choices. I believe 90% of the time everyone can find a 'safe zone' for themselves to not to be ridiculed or picked on.
You can not marry that person who likes certain type of figures and will definitely hurt your feelings every time you change your appearance. Can you? Of course but however if you did - you went against logic and you are out of safety zone.
I can go on with examples but there are too many and every one of you knows them. If you walk in a dark in strange area - you have 99% more chances to get hurt. So its the same for everything! Do not go where you can get hurt. Choose those people to be your friends who visibly liking you as supposed to those who obviously using you or disrespect you every given time!
See? Its easy! Don't worry! Be happy!

I think we can all agree that we should be treating others with respect. I'm not going to go down the street calling people out on what they're wearing/what they look like. But I am free to think whatever I want. If you're trying to tell me what I can and can't think, we're going to have a serious problem.

After I pushed the button, I realized it was probably black hair. The funny thing about talking about goth teens, is that teens are most likely doing it to (a) stand out and shock someone or (b) fit in with the crowd who originally did it for reason A. So protesting that we shouldn't think they are freaks is somewhat contrary to what they really want us to think. If you truly believe this, you were never around goth teens. I got into it because of the funny saying shirts and some of the music I liked.

::If my son wanted to wear something racist or sexist I would ask him why he felt he wanted to wear something that promoted such negativity. I would personally feel as though I had failed as a parent if he wanted to wear something that was racists or sexist. :: So would you let him? If he wanted to wear a "Fuck (fill in a group's name)" shirt, would you let him? And if you wouldn't does that mean you don't love him? ::Nope, so long as they are clean I don't care. :: Maybe he doesn't want to wear clean pants. Maybe he wants to express himself by wearing pants that haven't been washed in 5 years that he's worn every day. If you loved him you'd just let him right? The real issue seems to be though that you can't imagine your child doing something you wouldn't like, so then the "you should let them do what they want" attitude comes out. It's easy to have that attitude if you think you're never going to be faced with it. One of the things I'd explain to my kid was that he can wear what he likes as long as it complies with school rules, the law and doesn't harm other people. Wearing a pink shirt fits within those guidelines. Wearing something racist is out with 2 out of 3 rules being broken (school rules and harming other people.) Not sure if there are school rules about stink, but being smelly does impinge on others, so it would be a no-no as far as we're concerned. People can choose not to look at your ugly pink shirt but they can't not smell you, so it's on you to not be obnoxious. Not sure about the other moms, but I don't particularly like my son's clothing choices. Some were gifts, some were things he made himself and some were things he saw and begged for as a birthday gift. Again, I'm a pretty conservative dresser and frankly think 85% of the people out there are badly dressed, including my son most of the time. I just think that's their choice as long as they're following the Big 3 rules.

The t-shirts are funny. What's weird now is to still see the look because it is so yesterday along with the pants halfway down your backside. Uh, if rats tails are out and they are, so is this look. By about a decade at least.

:I just think that's their choice as long as they're following the Big 3 rules. :
So basically, they're free to express themselves, as long as they do it within your rules. Which is really no different than telling them what they can and can't wear. They can wear anything within the rules, just like all parents would say.

We're not all going to get it all the time--I don't care how conformist you are, that is true. Someone will always think you suck. I'm not saying don't teach your kids about jerks, and how actions have consequences, blah, blah, blah. But teaching them that they deserve to be treated well, (and to treat others well is the first step) is a heck of alot more important than a pink shirt.
