"If you look at the responses on this thread, there's a pretty definite tone of "I'd rather an obese person get humiliated than have to deal with their choices" even if no one actually flat-out said that. Look at the posts asking why we should care about their feelings if they weren't considerate enough to plan ahead for their obesity in the first place. "
I think if they are willing to take the chance, it is on them. If the airlines don't make them buy a 2nd ticket thinking they don't want to humiliate them, then they will NEVER buy a 2nd ticket thinking they don't need to. If the person doesn't care, neither do I and neither should the airline. That doesn't mean I think obese people deserve to be humiliated on a daily basis.

I understand what you are saying, but up until this point, people werent' required to purchase extra space, were they? I really don't know. I just thought that what this thread was about - new regulations. I suppose someone could have voluntarily bought two seats and maybe should have considered others and done that. However, I have the option of buying two seats also to keep the undesireables away from me, yes?
I don't know about that. That seems a bit judgmental and not a conclusion I'm willing to leap to.
Actually, I do believe that other peoples' feeling are at LEAST as important as my physical comfort. So I can't disagree with that statement.
I disagree. Smoking actually causes physical harm to another person. Being touched by an overweight person does not.
I agree. And part of being responsible is having a care for others. At least that's part of my "responsible". So if I'm that offended by being touched by someone on a plane, I just won't fly.
It's not that I don't understand everything you are saying. I do. It's just not a hill for me. That doesn't mean it can't be for someone else.

True, how does that translate to "fat people deserve to be humiliated every day all day long" or however you put it?
You know when you are big and it is possible, you check it out.

It's amazing what some women will do to stuff themselves into a smaller size so as not to buy a size bigger and look a whole lot better.

Shocked the hell out of me and even though I just passed by, when I got into DDs car in Tampa, she bitched about me smelling like smoke.

No kidding, I'm short. I'd love to be able to touch the floor when I fly. I always feel like I'm 3 years old with my legs dangling.

Can peeps smoke in the airports? Cuz I wouldn't much like sitting next to a person whose clothes reek of smoke for a whole flight... No smoking in airports in the United States. FTFY. the German airports I've been in (MUC, FRA) have designated smoking areas in the terminals. I'd imagine other European airports have them as well, given the popularity of smoking over there, I just haven't noticed them. thankfully I've not been stuck next to someone who spent their time before boarding in one of these rooms. I'd definitely be looking for a way to move either myself or them.

Spray them! I'm telling you, it works. I used to carry a travel size of Lysol but I didn't like the smell and it's obviously rude whereas perfume is more tactful.

::pssst: people who are 6'6" - that's a genetic disorder. They also need to figure out how to not encroach on others during flights.::
And that's me, and it's not like I just wrap my legs around the back and into the seat ahead of me and let my feet hang onto someone's lap just because i'm tall.

Rukh, that's just SAD and scary. The last entry on my moms death certificate for cause of death was morbid obesity. I was very hurt by that and swore its never be me.

What happens if an obese person has purchased two seats on an overbooked flight? Could an airline say that since there isn't a separate rear end in the second seat, that seat should be used for one of the overbooked passengers?

I haven't looked at other airlines, but it seems to me most deal with this in the best way possible. Not sure what else tu expect from an airline. Maybe nothing. I still don't like it. I can't even imagine how humiliating it would be to get kicked off a flight for being too fat to fit in one of the seats... and yeah, I get that it's not the airline's fault and I get that most people think fat people deserve to be humiliated on a daily basis for daring to be fat and it's all their fault.
I just don't like it, that's all. That's ludicrous! Most people are fat, per all the statistics. www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm/ Percent of adults age 20 years and over who are obese: 33.9% (2007-2008) Percent of adults age 20 years and over who are overweight (and not obese): 34.4% (2007-2008) That's over 2/3rds of the population. Um, what's ludicrous? Most people are not obese to the point of having to buy two seats or if they are, they're not flying. I can't remember the last time I was next to an obese person on a plane, and I fly fairly frequently.

"The last entry on my moms death certificate for cause of death was morbid obesity. I was very hurt by that and swore its never be me." Awwww... Sorry to hear that, zib. I didn't actually think that could be a cause of death... I always thought morbid obesity meant "so obese that you are at high risk for diseases that can kill you."

To me it was an unecessary extra. She knew she was fat, too, but to be humiliated like that for no good reason. Yes, she purchased two seats or flew first class when she flew.
