Since they can't seem to get my where I want to go on time, and lose my baggage, I don't expect too much from them..........

"What if they didn't know? What if they hadn't flown in awhile, like Mid, and they fit okay the last time they flew so it didn't occur to them that this was a new rule? I don't remember any "warning" popping up the last time I flew about how if you were larger than X size requirement, you had to buy two seats. "
Whether it is a rule or not, they should be buying the 2nd seat if they cannot fit. And if they really didn't realize they couldn't fit (which I don't think is possible unless you are in denial), then they can take the next flight out that has 2 seats (if the current one doesn't). Why should the person sitting next to them be inconvenienced just because they were too ignorant to check or just so they are not inconvenienced? It is like "your rights end where my nose begins" or whatever the saying is. Your feelings/comfort do not override mine.

And do we (consumers and businesses) really want to make obesity "okay" by bending over backwards to cater to it? You're going to tell me businesses and consumers currently don't cater to obesity?!?! Think about the portion size of the last restaurant meal you ordered, and that's just for starters. the person next to you is given a cattle prod and will poke you once for each second you cross into their space. Sounds good, as long as I get to use it on children too 1) no one is forcing you to eat the whole meal or to eat it in one sitting. You don't have to eat it just because it's there (says the woman who just had 3 cookies because they were sitting there looking all delicious and, well, what was I supposed to do? ). 2) LOL ;D

"many are just eating more and moving less."
I can't argue with that.

I haven't looked at other airlines, but it seems to me most deal with this in the best way possible. Not sure what else tu expect from an airline.
Maybe nothing. I still don't like it. I can't even imagine how humiliating it would be to get kicked off a flight for being too fat to fit in one of the seats... and yeah, I get that it's not the airline's fault and I get that most people think fat people deserve to be humiliated on a daily basis for daring to be fat and it's all their fault.
I just don't like it, that's all.

Since things are so cut and dry, who owns the armrest? I always give the middle arm rests to the person sitting in the middle seat. If it's a 2 seat section, it's whoever gets to the row first.

DH and I have actually gotten in the habit of asking for boxes with our meal lately, because we never finish the whole thing and it saves time if we can just box up what's left once we're done eating.
But that's beside the point - the point is that the enormous portion size in America is so large precisely because consumers demand it. You could definitely call that "catering to obesity." A bunch of industries in the US depend on obesity - the last thing they want is for it to stop.

That part is on them, not the airlines, not the poor person sitting next to them. If they don't want to buy another seat ahead of time, nobody has to accomodate them or dance around their feelings. What if they didn't know? What if they hadn't flown in awhile, like Mid, and they fit okay the last time they flew so it didn't occur to them that this was a new rule? I don't remember any "warning" popping up the last time I flew about how if you were larger than X size requirement, you had to buy two seats. FYI, I'm partially playing devil's advocate because I agree this is a big issue - as I've been saying all along What if they didn't know they are fat? I think most people know if they are fat. All the airline's websites have info regarding this issue. I guess if you are obese & had never flown before it might not occur to you to research this. But I imagine most extremely overweight people deal with this type of stuff alot and are aware that they won't fit in these seats too well. I hate having the nose-pickers next to me. Maybe they are just trying to make you feel uncomfortable so you will give them more space ;D

I don't think most people think fat people deserve to be humiliated on a daily basis. It may be their fault in most cases but I would like to think majority of the people are sensitive to people's obesity. I don't think we are arguing they deserve to be humiliated versus they don't here, are we? We are arguing if the airline policies are acceptable. Their intention is not to humiliate, it is to accommodate the majority of their customers, which doesn't only include obese people but also skinny people who do not want to be squished!

Firebird, I understand your feelings. I'm pretty emotional right now about DFs step kids "borrowing" several thousands of dollars for a surrogate mother as opposed to adopting because they want a bio child. They do already have one and then I read about all the kids in need of homes and how much I want to open my own home to some. It's okay to feel strongly and sad about some pitiful situations. Those kids didn't cause their lack of parents either. Some fat people didn't cause their weight issue. It's sad all around.

It's like this...when I go to Red Lobster, I WANT TO ORDER the coconut shrimp with its delicious sauce, the cheesy garlic rolls, a potato and a salad with ranch dressing...what I END UP ORDERING is the wood-grilled tilapia, a salad with fat-free raspberry vinaigrette dressing, steamed veggies with no butter and I skip the rolls altogether. I'll save the coconut shrimp for a special occasion.

Yes i would think a person that is that overweight that may need a 2nd seat would know they are fat. We are not talking about the extra 5 lbs here.

Of course you're right, but when people get emotional about these things, logic is often a casualty.

I know there are some horrible people that feel the need to comment on others choices, but they aren't the majority. I just don't think it is fair for someone to have to be squished against a fat person for hours because the person was in denial about their size or too cheap to purchase a second ticket. They shouldn't be humiliated, but I shouldn't be squished & lose my personal space either.

If you look at the responses on this thread, there's a pretty definite tone of "I'd rather an obese person get humiliated than have to deal with their choices" even if no one actually flat-out said that. Look at the posts asking why we should care about their feelings if they weren't considerate enough to plan ahead for their obesity in the first place.
I get not wanting to pay for other people's choices. I get not wanting to be even more uncomfortable on flights than we already are. And yes, I agree that obesity is mostly a choice, and all choices have costs and consequences. It's not like I don't understand what people are saying. As I said, there's no perfect solution here. It's a pretty ugly problem, that's all I'm saying.

No, I meant "what if they didn't know about the seat size because they hadn't flown in awhile and didn't know they had to purchase an extra ticket in order to be able to fly?" Yes, you know you're fat but you don't necessarily know you're TOO fat until you get there if no one tells you in advance. And what if you're not prepared to pay for an extra ticket once you find out?

Can peeps smoke in the airports? Cuz I wouldn't much like sitting next to a person whose clothes reek of smoke for a whole flight...

Not reading the whole thread--but I stupidly used priceline for my last trip and was on 4 different planes for my trip. The first 3 had incredibly tiny seats. Both passengers would have to be underweight not to touch each other. The 4th plane felt luxurious by comparison. I'm sure it was just an inch or 2, but it made a huge difference.

Some airports still have smoking areas. That's enough to gag a maggot when you pass by those areas. I actually carry a small enough perfume thing with me and I spray stinky people if they are sitting next to me. Of course I ACT like I'm spraying myself but I'm not.
