I'd allow WWBG to show my kids Japanese Porn and feed them junk so I could have a few hours alone on a plane.

What game are you playing here firebird? I want 100% of my seat. If I have 100% of my seat, and no one is touching me, I don't care how big they are. I don't care if they are spilling into the aisle or not. I don't care if they are with a small child and using that child seat to supplement their own. None of my concern. I don't want some stranger's butt pressed up against me. I don't care if they weigh 100 or 400 pounds. stay out of my seat, don't touch me. all is good. Since things are so cut and dry, who owns the armrest? the airline.

I need the aisle seat...I count the seats to the emergency exit, so I can climb over everyone to get out fast...I get a nervous bladder on plane rides too...so worried that when I really NEED to go, the light will come on saying I need to stay in my seat.

"So far, I like the suggestions for posting the width requirements and automatically refunding the second seat if the flight isn't full best. "
I am not sure about posting the sizes but I believe somebody said Southwest already has the policy, which makes sense to me. But obese people need to accept that they are not fitting into a regular size seat and purchase without having to be told if they want to avoid humiliation. That part is on them, not the airlines, not the poor person sitting next to them. If they don't want to buy another seat ahead of time, nobody has to accomodate them or dance around their feelings.

Comparing rare situations with a common situation is silly in my opinion. Obviously the airlines cannot accommodate everyone, they can only try to accommodate people/situations that happen frequently, which obesity has become. And since it has become common, I'd think they'd come up with a better way to accommodate the issue. Like I said, it's not like people are getting any skinnier. Why not figure out a humane way to deal with the issue now? So far, I like the suggestions for posting the width requirements and automatically refunding the second seat if the flight isn't full best. Those seem like the easiest to immediately implement. as long as people keep buying tickets with seats being as they are now, airlines will not change. And do we (consumers and businesses) really want to make obesity "okay" by bending over backwards to cater to it?

What happens if you're "borderline," e.g. you can just barely fit in their seat with an extension and if you keep your arms tucked or crossed you don't encroach on the person next to you? Can you buy a single seat if you promise to do that for the whole flight? What if you fall asleep midflight and your arms accidentally uncross?

flying is a privilege, not a right. If people find that flying is problematic, there are other ways to get where you need to go. Yeah...like cruiship...boats are wide! Longleggers and chubsters are fit all and than some!

This is like suing McDonalds for being obese. Nobody makes a person obese. Unless they have health problems (which is probably pretty rare), obese people need to take responsibility. Just because the seat is twice as big as I am doesn't mean, I have to eat until I fill the seat, then demand to have bigger seats.

"Nobody makes a person obese."
I think for some, there could be a hereditary aspect.

What if they didn't know? What if they hadn't flown in awhile, like Mid, and they fit okay the last time they flew so it didn't occur to them that this was a new rule? I don't remember any "warning" popping up the last time I flew about how if you were larger than X size requirement, you had to buy two seats. FYI, I'm partially playing devil's advocate because I agree this is a big issue - as I've been saying all along

Well a skinny person can fall asleep and get in your space too. I would hope you would nudge them. I think they need a different approach then just being able to put the armrests down. There are plenty of overweight people who can put the armrests down but they still get into the other seat from top and bottom of the armrest, which defeats the purpose.

And do we (consumers and businesses) really want to make obesity "okay" by bending over backwards to cater to it? You're going to tell me businesses and consumers currently don't cater to obesity?!?! Think about the portion size of the last restaurant meal you ordered, and that's just for starters. the person next to you is given a cattle prod and will poke you once for each second you cross into their space. Sounds good, as long as I get to use it on children too

So far, I like the suggestions for posting the width requirements and automatically refunding the second seat if the flight isn't full best. Those seem like the easiest to immediately implement. So basically you like what both southwest & frontier already do. I don't see anything on the united website about refunding the 2nd seat, but if you look around on the site you will find seat widths for the different plane types & both frontier & southwest specify their seat widths also. I haven't looked at other airlines, but it seems to me most deal with this in the best way possible. Not sure what else tu expect from an airline.

"Nobody makes a person obese." I think for some, there could be a hereditary aspect. Without a doubt but that isn't the cause for the majority or even a decent percent of people who are actually obese. Humans haven't evolved in the last 30+ years so that they're naturally obese many are just eating more and moving less.
