Honestly, I will not pay extra for wider seats. My family and I are normal weight and we have no problem fitting in the seats. I don't want to pay extra just because other people can't fit in the seats. And most people I know that travel (when not having the bill picked up by work) would not want to fly an airline that is more expensive. I pick my airlines by 1. ticket price 2. non-stop flight. I don't care about the size of the seat.... It still comes down to expecting those of us that aren't fat to pay more because of others. I have no problem with the seats as they are now. Honestly, I would pay extra not to share a flight with you. There is a breed of traveler I just don't want to be around. I don't know if they are truly inconsiderate or just plain oblivious. But they are going to load their bag sideways in the overhead bin, before sitting down to the most foul smelling deli sandwich they could find. After lunch, they'll bruise my kneecaps when they recline if they are ahead of me... or even better, if we share a row, they will take both armrests, insist upon leaping from their seat the moment we land, so their ass is in my face for 20 minutes because I cannot physically stand under the overhead bin, and proceed to have the loudest cell phone conversation before we deplane so 20 rows of people can listen to how frustrated air travel makes you, when they just want to check their voicemail or call a ride. Something tells me those assholes are all going to be taking the bargain flight with you and your undersized family. Enjoy!

Anyone else finds it EXTREMELY ironic that half of people on this thread calling the other half inconsiderate, all while proposing that it's perfectly OK to inconvenience others in the spirit of goodness and all around humanity?

Oh that drives me nuts. I'm a little claustrophobic to begin with, and when that plane lands, I want OFF. NOW. Having someone block me between my seat and the overhead bin makes me want to scream. This thread is why I avoid air travel ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

I actually prefer getting off at the end...I hate being rushed and squished. I am never in that big of a hurry to get off the plane. I just sit and enjoy my peanuts. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I'd personally rather sit next to an overly plump person than sit next to someone who is coughing incessantly throughout the whole flight...I have experienced this...

No more so than any other debate with opposing opinions. particularly on these boards... it probably should be ironic, but this is kind of how we always play. ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/smileys/1-1.gif)

Threads would be two posts long! And I'd have to actually work during the day.

I understand where people prefer NOT to sit next to someone who is quite heavy...it has to be terribly uncomfortable. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I might feel differently if I were on a flight from say Chicago to Maui. That is a long time to be THAT uncomfortable. I think I could manage for a few hours, but I might still request an airline voucher at the end for a free flight.

I don't know since English is not my first language, but I didn't think "ironic" had to be unexpected. I am going to look it up

Also, there is a difference between having a difference of opinion and accusing the other side of exact same thing that you are exhibiting.

I don't know since English is not my first language, but I didn't think "ironic" had to be unexpected. I am going to look it up Well, my understanding of irony is similar to yours. The blog comments unrelentingly called normal sized people "assholes" and other awful things for not simply understanding that fat people need more space and just shutting up and dealing with being squished. IE - it's not an issue for fat people to encroach on smaller people's space, because smaller people should just understand that this is what it takes for the fat person to fly and be comfortable. For me, the ironic part was where the author of the blog described how her husband is tall as well as fat so tells people in front of him that they can't recline their seats back because it encroaches into his space and makes him uncomfortable. ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) I guess it's OK to ask for people to not encroach on your space if you're fat, but not OK for smaller people to ask fat people to not encroach on their space?

Also, there is a difference between having a difference of opinion and accusing the other side of exact same thing that you are exhibiting. Again...no difference than in any other debate, except that IMO, this one was more civil than usual; with little, if any, accusations at all. Most people seemed to understand the other "side", but just disagreed.

I'm going to go to a restaurant when I'm REALLY hungry, and instead of buying a larger meal (or two), I'm going to walk up to some random person and take 25% of the food off their plate.

My mom just brought up an interesting point. She has a friend who flies occasionally - a couple of times a year - to visit grandchildren. This lady is highly sensitive to those extreme perfume wearers. Not in a deadly way as in anaphalactic shock or anything (that I know of) - just as in it makes her sneeze, irritates her throat and makes her eyes water. Since she is slightly or maybe even more than slightly uncomfortable on a flight with extreme perfume wearers, what does she do? What are her options? Would it be akin to the weight thing since another's perfume is invading her space?

GEL: My daughter's fifth grade teacher was severely allergic to perfumes, etc. She sent home a note at the beginning of the year asking parents to have their children refrain from wearing perfume, bringing "scented" markers to school, etc. She was an outstanding teacher and I think everyone obliged, but I am sure there were probably a few who were opposed.

When I subbed, I had to have a young boy who had a peanut allergy sit at a table alone during snack time. I also had to be aware of how to use an EpiPen. He literally could not even have the snacks of others touch his table "area." I wonder where the peanut allergies were when I was a kid???

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all work toward a solution that works for everyone like the 5th graders were able to? I'm not talking about the subject of this thread specifically - kids just slay me sometimes with how simple and straightforward things seem to them. "Teacher gets sick so I won't do it." Instead of "Its my right to have scented markers if I want and to heck with her." I love kids. As long as they aren't mine!
