I agree with those that are overweight not really thinking they are. My moms doctor told her she was obese. It hurt her feelings. She was crying when she told me he said that. I told her that although I had sympathy for her, he didn't lay awake all night thinking up ways to insult her. Plus, he was right. She wasn't just overweight, she was obese, period. She chose to eat for whatever reason, just crap food that was fattening and unhealthy. I'm sure it tasted good but bottom line, it's bad for you.

Or they could just charge by the pound ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif) Yeah right, most women don't even tell the truth about their weight on their driver's license. Oh, Hell no! We do not lie when asked our weight for flying. In fact, when I'm in one of those situations where a tiny little air company in some third world area asks how much I weigh, I always say "200." (That's about 75 pounds more than I actually weigh.) I do not want them cutting it close on the fuel estimating.

Story from a flight attendant: Can I tell a story? Early in my career (I have been flying for 14 years), I had a slim, young, kinda good-looking business guy accost me during boarding and rudely and loudly refuse, right in front of the hugely fat, very good-looking business guy next to him, to sit next to someone “so huge” and he flat-out demanded that I look for another open seat. I assured him that I would check for one, and did so.
We can get in big trouble (like fired) for doing this, but I returned to the row in question, told the slim guy that yes, indeed, there was a seat available in First Class, and then offered it to the fat guy, who was only too happy to move. The instigator was floored and wanted very badly to be furious, but he had gotten exactly what he asked for (he did not “have” to sit next to the offending fatty, after all) and the situation quickly fizzled. Buahahaha, that's some awesome karma right there. I think we can all agree the skinny guy was being a dick about the situation. Good for that flight attendant.

Gee...good idea. Never thought of that, but you read about planes going down because they had too much weight on board.

Oh sure, you are the reason they hve to circle burning off fuel because they are to heavy to land I'm totally OK with that if that's the consequence. An extra circle or two to burn off fuel usually doesn't result in disaster, but we've all read stories about planes crashing because they underestimated the weight or didn't have enough fuel. Circle all you want, just don't run out of fuel or pack that puppy too heavy.

BTW, I just finished reading that FUnited entry that was linked on page 1 of this thread. Wow, that is a bunch of angry, self-entitled people. NO personal responsibility at all - just anger over other people who won't meekly and quietly be squished.
I'm tempted to see if I can start posting over there and whip up their support for a boycott of certain airlines. Then the rest of us will know which airlines we can fly without having to sit next to a 500 pound person who is angrily calling us an asshole while simultaneously crushing the stuffing out of us.

The problem is that what sells is cheap flights. That is why airlines like Ryanair are doing so well. They offer ridiculously cheap flights. It doesn't matter that the seat pitch is 29 inches compared to a standard 31 inches. It doesn't matter that seats aren't as wide as a standard airline seat. Those seats sell because they are cheap.True, BUT if enough people are being forced to pay double fare and an airline pops up which offers wider seats for a slight increase in cost, there won't be much contest. I'm not suggesting they'll make it a major selling point, but it's going to become clear pretty quickly if they offer wider seats without charging double price, and larger people will book with them instead. Perhaps Midwest Air simply missed its time. Honestly, I will not pay extra for wider seats. My family and I are normal weight and we have no problem fitting in the seats. I don't want to pay extra just because other people can't fit in the seats. And most people I know that travel (when not having the bill picked up by work) would not want to fly an airline that is more expensive. I pick my airlines by 1. ticket price 2. non-stop flight. I don't care about the size of the seat.... It still comes down to expecting those of us that aren't fat to pay more because of others. I have no problem with the seats as they are now.

We went to D.C. during my senior year of high school - about 25 AP Government students. Our teacher was MIA pretty much the whole time and we got a little wild, pulled an all-nighter the night before we flew home. On the flight home, I fell asleep (which NEVER happens - I can't sleep in moving vehicles). Woke up about 2 hours into the flight, completely disoriented and slap-happy. Saw that we were circling pretty close to the ground. Said, "Hey, I think the plane's gonna crash!" Har har har. Except apparently we'd been circling about 20 minutes at that point and everyone was scared shitless. Made for an awkward rest of the flight. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Late to the party as usual... A couple of years ago, my very slender and extremely nice DH boarded a flight between DC and California. He got to his seat only to find that it was literally more than half occupied by the very large lady next to him. Flight was full, he didn't want to make a fuss...so he spent a very painful five-hour flight trying to sit on the side of his hip because that was all that would fit in his assigned seat. (And, FWIW, she was still embarrassed and humiliated. Presumably less than she would have been had she had to deplane. Personally, I don't think that's enough to justify the inconvenience and discomfort DH went through.) Yes, I think anyone obese enough that the armrest won't go down should absolutely be required to buy an extra seat (refundable for non-full flights) and if they don't fit, they should be bumped and rescheduled although making them pay for an all-new ticket + extra seat seems a little harsh. Your freedom ends where it starts taking away mine; my freedom ends where it starts infringing on yours. I also thought the comments on the blog were absolutely grotesque. It's one thing to object to policy or small seats, but to take pride in offending others, and to gloat over annexing space that they bought and paid for is somewhere between very disturbing and pathetic. Finally, karma for Rukh for putting things so clearly all day ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

milee, Rukh, hoops....damn, I need to start a karma list just for this thread! Milee, that is a fab idea - that people who agree with the two-seat policy should post their support for United.
