Working on movin' over our intro but feel free to post your goals ~start Okie Dokie Wonderful People! It's about time to shake things up around these parts. A few months back Honeylioness had an impassioned plea to get us back to the focus of our thread. The fundamentals. The basics. Plus the friendship. Did y'all know we've successfully planned vacations together? Life keeps on going with new babies, relationships, homes, challenges, jobs and financial hurdles but we stick to it. So, get sticky! Here are some way to get your goals to stick:#1. Post your numbers - just put it at the top of a post in bold and let us know how you're doin' and what you need help with #2. Track your numbers - technically this should be #1 but you know it. If you need ideas for tracking post and ask the veterans for guidance #3. Share your life but please keep it somewhat financially related - we know that everything influences finances especially when we're stressed, tired, excited and busy. BUT this is a financial accountability group, not a therapy session If you want to go off topic consider starting a fresh thread and posting a link so those who are interested can support you there. For the new people there are no real set rules here, you set your own. The basic goal most if not all of us have are to keep track of the days we don't spend and hopefully by that work on saving money. Some are looking to put it into savings others to pay down debt. For some they only count the day as a no spend day if they spend nothing at all. Others will count it if they keep their total under $5. Some count all spending others only count a certain part of their budget. For example MittenKitten personally take $400 out of the the bank in cash for everything that is not related to vehicle expenses (like gas, oil changes, insurance etc) or the house (mortgage, utilities, HOA) If I spend out of the $400 I count it as a spend day (although if it is less then $5 I usually count it as a no spend day.) You set your own rules. Any questions feel free to ask. You can post your no spend days daily or whenever you want, just put it in bold at the top with the first number being the number you want me to record. If you are doing daily then: Today (or yesterday) $0 Spend day More then one day at a time: 4/31 days $0 Spend Which translates into 4 out of 31 days in July have been no spend so far. Some use the bigger number as their goal number so do 4/15 No spend Days which means they have a goal of 15 no spend days this month. Here's a handy guide to some of our terminology:NSD: No Spend Day CSD: Controlled Spend Day BFF: Best Friend Forever DH/DS/DD/DSS: Dear Husband, Dear Son Dear Daughter, fiance, boy friend, Dear Step-Son DIL, MIL, BIL, SIL: Daughter in law, Mother In Law, Brother in Law, Sister In Law NKCW: No Killing Co-Worker Day (could also be no kill DH NKDH etc) NS or NSD: No Spend or No Spend Day NEO: No eating out HTH: Hope This Helps KWIM: Know What I mean FWIW: For What It's Worth IMHO or IMO: In my Humble Opinion or In My Opinion Having a Startsmart Day is referring to when you have 20+ things on your must get done in a day and you accomplish them. Single Mom-KY aka Smokey; MittenKitten aka MK; Pt_In_NY aka Pointy; The Boy is Sheila in Cali's son. Blue is Red_Wagon's DH TBear is MizBear's older niece. ZBear is MizBear's younger niece.

So, we've tried the idea of captains in the past but here's the thing we need volunteers! I know it's busy with summer and travel and all that jazz but if you wouldn't mind taking an hour this month to help the group here's what you would do: - Create a question of the week (QOTW) and challenge of the week (COTW) related to the question and post it on Sunday
- Pop in throughout the week to answer questions, give support, karma and cheer others on.
- Post the tally on Saturday for the group for those tracking their numbers.
Wanna help? Just post here or message me and you can take a week! Captain Planet Barbosa No Spend!July 1-7 startsmart July 8-14 azmom! July 15-21 July 22-29 dakota (pending hand healing ;D) July 29-August 4 Honeylioness had a wonderful answer I think really defines WHAT we are about: "I will admit that during my first two months of lurking, I wondered just how in the WORLD someone could not spend any money at ALL for 25 days? Did they just pay all their bills one day a month, and that same day do the food shopping for the month? Like many new to the concept I saw it as horribly, and restrictively, black or white – an opinion first based merely on the name of the thread. But once I came to understand that it was not so totalitarian and was more about finding a way that worked for you to track your spending and any “leaks” in the wallet, it has felt more like a tool and less like a punishment. I wish I could say that I have paid off five extra years from the mortgage, or now have an EF of six months take home – but alas that would not be true. What I do have however is a better awareness of where my “leaks” are, what are my hot buttons that make me want to spend on things I really don’t need or really cannot afford right now. And an awareness of the fact when I AM spending money. I think that awareness is key to learning a new behavior or paradigm. Just like lumberlady (a member that hasn't been a regular lately but is still a much loved part of our community), some of us have had to look hard in the mirror and acknowledge that we had a problem. Until people can do that, be it an addiction to alcohol or drugs or credit cards ….. they will never really GET it." Thanks Honeylioness!

July 1-7 Captain Post!
QOTW - Why is it important to you to accomplish a no spend or controlled spend lifestyle? What goals is this helping you achieve?
COTW - Create a simple reminder around your home or car or purse to remind you of these goals. You could put a post-it note on your bathroom mirror, wrap a picture of your dream house around your credit card or even an inspiration picture on your steering wheel (no more fast food!).
Check back here soon for final June numbers!

I'm in for July. June was spendy with vacation, car repair and rebuilding the deck. Since it is summer and DH is doing lots of projects around the house, I'm going to shoot for 8 NS days & 5 CS days. So far for the month we are at 1 NS.
I can't type much right now I think I sprained a finger yesterday, helping move DH's grandpa and it hurts to type the that hand. If my hand is feeling better I'll be the captain the week of the 22nd.

I'm also in for the month again. I'm going to continue to shoot for 10 NSD, 10 CSD (<$5). I'll look at my schedule for the month and see if I can take a week as captain. I'll get back to ya on that one!

Update 1 NSD
But today: spend day.
My pup Wilson has had some problems with his skin and it's not getting better so off to the vet we go. $50 just for the office visit, more if he needs diagnosis or medication. I am praying it's just a low immune system and he needs some steroids, if it's something more serious (like cancer) then you'll find me curled up in a corner crying.
While I'm out for Wil I'm also going to mail a package, pick up something Mom forgot at the coffee shop yesterday, get a few things at Wal-Mart and visit the bank.

Goal: 10 NSDI am off to a good start with 1/10 NSD. I was determined not to spend any money yesterday. Sunday's are a major money spending trap. They are normally DH's only day off and we get lazy and go buy lunch or go to the grocery store together and fill the cart with crap or I send DH to the store and he buys crap. We made a deal NOT to go to the store on Sunday. I had already shopped for everything we NEEDED and we did it! I also did 6 loads of laundry (washed and put it all away) I cleaned out the kids rooms and closets too! QOTW: For us, accomplishing a NS/CS is important because we want it to become a lifestyle. It's just the smart, grown up thing to do! We have been CC free for four years. While have learned to live on our own income (which seems silly but we lived off of CC for years), we still struggle with living within our means. Does that make sense? Last year we lived pay check to pay check and ran on fumes right before next pay day. It doesn't mean we can't make spend money. It just means that we NEED to budget and save for the fun stuff. At a time in this journey we were doing really good with our "spending plan" and budgeting in fun money but we were also living on a shoe string budget. Now that DH is making a little bit more it was getting too easy to just go to the store and but groceries knowing I had wiggle room. There is a reason for a budget and we needed to be reminded of the BIG PICTURE. COTW: Sooo. We decided to use our timeshare and go to Palm Springs for a week instead of our Disneyland or San Diego idea. It's free for one thing (as in nothing out of our pocket right now but we do pay a yearly maintenance fee in Nov.) I will say that wanting to go on vacation made me think twice before I spent any money and I went back to the cash only method. Instead of taking out my entire grocery budget I just took out a $100 and tried to make it last as long as I could. I still have $4 in my wallet. The cash reminds me that my debit card is off limits. If it is budgeted for I will have the cash for it because all of our other bills get paid online or come out of our checking account. With that being said. In addition to continuing on with my cash budget I have put an index card in my wallet with our upcoming NEEDS. Like braces for my daughter, school shopping and a few wants like a new kitchen table and a sofa (our black leather bachelor style sofas are twelve years old!) Does anyone use ING accounts? I used to hear about them all the time to aid in savings for different things when I first joined but haven't hear anything about them in a while. If you have/had an account did you find it useful? Today all I need to do is go to the grocery store. I will consider it a CSD and get my cash out for the week. As long as I spend the cash I will count the rest of the days as NSD. (My brother is turning 30 on the 4th of July and DH wants to buy fireworks so that is our only potential SPEND day. I hope to keep it under control.) I can volunteer for July 8-14~Happy No Spending~Oh and THANK YOU SS for the redirection

thanks for volunteering azmom and congrats on how far you and DH have come! It's a process, for sure! Today the vet was $103, which was a much better fee than the $500+ for more expensive diagnosis (without any treatment). Poor Wilson is looking so pathetic. He gets a bath today and starts antibiotics for the skin. Still need to head into town for the post office and bank but didn't want to leave Wilson in the car during those errands. Whew. Emotionally exhausting, I swear. But Wilson "got" them for all the poking and prodding by pooping in the lobby and then giving them sad eyes

Just found out this morning that the 16 year old girl who lives across the street from us died yesterday morning while walking or jogging. I am just heartbroken. She was the sweetest person. She took care of her 8 year old brother and 3 1/2 year old sister to the point of really being the one who raised them. She was just over here twice on Friday for her sister to play with my DD. Had the nicest conversation with her.
Really if I could have I would have taken her into my home and let her be the teenager she deserved to be. Instead she raised her siblings, cooked dinner and did her mother's job. She had 2 years and she would have been free to live her life and have fun. I am so happy I knew her and hope by being there to talk to somehow eased her burdens.
Even though her parents didn't do right by her I know they are heartbroken.

OMG MK - that's so sad! Do they know the circumstances like hit by a car while running or just collapsed? Her poor family too - it sounds like they leaned on her a lot and might now just get how wonderful she was. Hugs to you too MK, it's hard when someone so young dies.
*
Well I deposited a check from a client (yay!) and sent a package off to blue eyes. He's so great and I try to tell him that often. Today he fixed my computer remotely when I deleted something from the menu bar accidentally. Also, got a package of brownies from my mentor as a thank you and that was really sweet too.
So despite Wilson's vet visit, it's been a good day!

Update: 1NSD 1 CSD
I'm in again. Aiming for 15 NSDs but I know that I will need to get a few things before I go back to work next month so I am not so sure if I will reach it. Also have a series of medical things to take care of before then. But that is what a goal is for -- to keep things in focus.
MK -- So sorry to read about your neighbor.

Yesterday I stuck to to the plan and only spent at the grocery store and have cash for the rest of the week making it a CSD. Although for the purpose of this thread I am only tracking NSD so I am still at 1/10 NSD
MK: HUGS- That is so heartbreaking
SS: Thanks
Dakota: I hope your finger is okay.

2/10 NSD I did have to go to the store yesterday because I forgot to get rice vinegar for our lettuce wraps last night AND the baby cut her head pretty good and of course with a house full of kids we didn't have any band aids! It was purchased with my cash so I already counted it as a spend. Today should be a NSD too. Today is my brother's 30th birthday. You can read my tribute to him on my blog and see updated pics of my kiddos anotherhousewife.com/Hope everyone has a Blessed and Safe Fourth of July celebrating America's Independence! ~Happy No Spending~

Hope y'all are having a great day! Anyone out there workin'?
Been pretty lazy around here - the dogs are sleeping a lot and trying to ignore the fireworks. Wilson also got bath #2 of the week.
Today will be a NSD #2 and I think Thursday and Friday will be as well. Especially Friday because that's when my books will be delivered and I'm so anxious to get them!! Been editing a bit today and I can't wait to re-print them in "final" format. Eeek!

Final June Numbers
28 NEO 21 NSD/CSDI actually was surprised my NSD number was as high as it actually was. I had a month where I felt as though I was spending on a lot of non "essential" items. However it seems that even though it was more than the last several months it was still somewhat within the parameters of my budget. Job - The interview I had a couple of weeks ago, while I thought it went well, did not result in a call back. So back again to the beginning. EXCEPT - that I was required to attend a seminar through the Unemployment Office in order to continue receiving benefits. It was a bit overly simplistic for my situation since they covered most of the techniques and sites I am already using based on my experience with Human Resources. Captain - I can take the July 15th week if a captain is still needed. QOTW - My goal at the moment is to be able to just survive during this time of unemployment. Dakota - I hope your hand feels better soon. startsmart - I was sorry to hear Wilson was not feeling good. Hopefully the shampoo will clear things up quickly. And "Congrats" on the book. Mitten - I was sorry to read about the young lady you knew. What a terribly thing for her family to have to deal with. For those not on Facebook where I made my announcement - I started a "real" blog page. Just because I wanted to see if perhaps it worked better as a forum for some of my snarkier, day to day observations .... we will see. livingwiththelioness.blogspot.com/I also am hoping to be able to use it as an easier method for my Exchange Students' families to see what they are up to. Le Sigh .... I was out in the sun for only about an hour .. perhaps less ... today at a local town parade and I now have shoulders, upper arms and v-neck area that are "boiled lobster" red. OUCH.

Rocky Mtn Saver: 1 NSD, 1 CSD (<$5). I don't expect today to be a CSD, as I have to pick up something to eat between work and a post-work engagement. Oh well. Yesterday was an NSD, so I'm still making headway. And it's finally raining a little here in Colorado, which is great for our lousy hot fire season.

7/4/2012 Post
Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday.
QOTW--This lifestyle is allowing me to to live a comfortable life and still set some savings aside. I am trying to build up some extra savings The "financial cliff" this country is facing at the end of the year really has me worried. I'm not an extreme "doomsday prepper" but I AM afraid we may face some hard times ahead. Mostly extreme inflation, which will really impact those of us on a fixed income, so I want some $$ set aside.
COTW--In meeting with the attorney and accountant last week I sat down for the first time and really calculated my net worth--more than I ever imagined, although still not that much and I have to die for much of it to be realized--and learned how much more that I need to set aside to get to a "nice number" as Mr. Monk would say. So that has become my goal.
I have sort of dropped off the world the past couple of weeks. Of the past 14 days only two have been less than 102*-108*. The heat zaps me and all I want to do is turn on the AC, strip to as few clothes as I can and stretch out directly in front of or under a fan. A cool front is to be moving in today and over the next couple of days we will have a 20* drop in the daily highs. I can't wait. AZmom, you have my complete summer sympathies! I don't know how you cope.
Anyone heard from Sapphire and how she was affected by the D.C. weather disaster. Perhaps I'll give her a call after the holiday.
About the only productive accomplishment I can report is cleaning out and organizing my pantry. I also cleaned out the kitchen fridge and freezer. I'll wait until cooler fall weather to tackle the freezer in the garage. Probably after I turn the fruit we have been collecting into jams and jellies, and have less stuff in the freezer to move around.
I can't believe that as dry as it is here and how many small fires have already erupted around here the county/city had not banned fireworks. I can sit on my back deck and see the fireworks all over the neighborhood. And as soon as I ohhh and awww I worry about fire. Yesterday the wildfire smoke hung over the town all day and stunk. The fires are 75 to 150 miles away. The people near the fires have my sympathies, I still vividly remember the fire we had here about six years ago.
I will admit this hot weather is keeping me home and therefore not spending money.
(I tried to post this yesterday but I was having internet "issues". And like when you take a car in to have something checked everything works perfectly for the mechanic, this morning when I called IT the internet connection is working just fine. Of course the tech admitted the problem could have been heat related. So I am to call back when/if the problem happens again.)

I'm in this month. Update 1 CS/3 NS
QOTW Because our finances are pretty solid I am able to work relatively part time. It helps that I have a really good job for flexibility and make enough per hour that it makes it work it to work part time but those things wouldn't really matter if we were spending money hand over fist. This lifestyle allows me to put family first which is something I really hope I can always do. COTW Right now, our new house is my reminder but usually it is the girls!

3/10 NSD
Yeah for will power! I have NO NEED to spend money today. I already have dinner planned out. Tomorrow is pay day and if all goes planned today I will have saved the most money from paycheck to paycheck to date. This makes me so excited.
SES: It is miserable. We spend our entire Summer indoors. It's still at least 100 degrees after the sun goes down. We make trips to the library and have tickets to the Summer Movie program once a week to keep us from going completely stir crazy. Housecleaning is pointless. The kids turn the entire house into a make shift park and I really can't blame them. With that being said. It was beautiful yesterday. I can't remember a Fourth of the July being so cool. It rained a little during the morning and the air was cool and slightly crisp (for AZ standards) at night.
Honey: Congrats on the blog. When I get a minute I will add it to my blog roll.
Rocky: I am a little slow. I didn't realize you were from CO. The images have just been heartbreaking. Thank goodness for rain.
SS: Exciting about the book.

Update: 3 NSD 1 CSDQOTW - Why is it important to you to accomplish a no spend or controlled spend lifestyle? What goals is this helping you achieve? I like the challenge of trying for NS days but the main reason I like going for them is twofold. One to rebuild my savings after doing the renovation of my house several years ago. (Those who have been here for a while will remember that marathon frustration with my contractor). The other reason is that I enjoy traveling and I try to save some each month so that I can accomplish that. Also I am fast approaching retirement age and I want to have that extra cushion so that little setbacks will not become major issues. COTW - My desktop background is a favorite photo from a previous trip. True inspiration for future ones. Summer and AC -- Goes on forever in the deep south. I spend most of the day indoors with the AC going and under ceiling fans. All errands are run early in the morning with the intent to get inside the cool before the major heat of the day.

okay ... confession time .... I have not watched the news for over a week ... I had NO idea what the heck SES meant about a "DC Weather Disaster" ... or why GLDNLUVLY posted on FaceBook about getting power back but losing everything in her freezer.

Hey ladies! I'm still here but frazzled so I'm not sure I'll be tracking. Just wanted to say hi and happy July!
azmom - I have ING savings accounts and love them. I have different ones for my EF, car fund, vacation fund, gifts fund (Christmas, weddings etc), pets fund, baby fund, taxes (from freelancing), etc. Helps me focus and makes it harder to get at the money since it takes a few days to transfer to my regular bank.
15 days until my vacation (babymoon) in Maine. And I'm making progress on getting my money back for the plane tickets for our cancelled cruise. Woo!
And about 3.5 months until babies arrive. AHHHH! So much to do!!!! But luckily I am doing really well health-wise, as are the babies, so I'm hoping they make it to full term and give us time to get the nursery finished!

busy day for me, we moved my grandpa to a new facility today - he's now in a higher level convalescence hospital. It was definitely hard to deal with since I think my uncle is a tool. My Mom arrives tomorrow and we'll clean out the old space and move over what's appropriate to the new room. Looks like just clothes, bath items, pictures and a few small mementos. Everything else will need to find a new home. The only thing I could conceivably see myself taking is the TV but only if it's offered.
So I bought coffee this morning but have zero plans to go out this afternoon. I need to make some lists for tomorrow and clean up the house.
Mostly I'm just emotionally exhausted.

I'll be honest and say I am still sitting at 3/10 NSD. I only had $6 left in my wallet and I spent $23 at the grocery store on my debit card. It was a CSD in my book because it comes out of the grocery budget and according to my calculations (including yesterday) I have spent $106 out of $500 for the month. So not too shabby. AND I know we are only 6 days into July but we have not went out to eat once! I have had a string of bad news come in. A good friend of the family (she is my MIL best friend and is like family to us) her husband is in the ICU and is not doing well. They both have been at all the kids birthdays and have spent Christmas and Easter with us several times. Their teenage grandson died unexpectedly in his sleep not even a year ago. So heartbreaking. AND I have a best friend in Rhode Island. She and I became pen pals when we were 12 years old and have become such great friends. She was in my wedding and I've been out to see her a few times but we have mostly communicated through letters and now online. Anyhow her mom is going to die any day and it kills me that I can not go out there to be with her. I watched my dad died and I know how important it is to have someone who is just there. Not someone to give you advice or talk to just someone there. The cheapest airline tickets are around $500 and we just can't do it. We just paid over a $1,000 in debt in the last two months (you know because we are growing up) while I am glad that we doing wiser things with our money I am so freaking sad I don't have that money to go out there. So yeah that is probably why I spent money at the grocery store. You know I was really lashing out yesterday by buying paying while price for milk and cereal and buying beer AND My legs are still injured. I am still in physical therapy where I am being tortured in a good way. I posted pics on facebook of the bruising on my legs from them scrapping my legs. There is a huge build up of dead tissue in both my legs and they are breaking it down again and again so it can start to repair itself or whatever. Anyhow. I ran for the first time last week. Only one mile and I felt great. I ran a 9:41 mile and it felt like I was jogging and easy breezy pain free pace. I went to run another mile and my legs were tighter, just short of hurting and I had a 10:40 pace. Yesterday I had a 11:41 pace and they plain out hurt. It's just frustrating. I am doing everything I am told to do like going to physical therapy and doing my at home work and only running when and how much the PT says too. My insurance only covers 12 session and I have already had 6 and it cost $25 co-payment for every visit PLUS I will be billed another $50 for each visit because my deductible is not met yet so yeah not cheap BUT it is worth it if I can just run again. Enough about my gloomy news. RED: Thank You. 3.5 months WOW! Enjoy your baby-moon

Hello, friends! I wanted to stop by because I have some news that I think you all need to know. And that news is...I quit my job today!!! That's right. I resigned to focus on becoming a full-time writer. It's completely risky and probably insane but I did it anyway. I'm trying to be confident that I can be successful but, well, we'll see what happens.
I have to give credit to this board for me even having the opportunity to do it. If you all hadn't been there though the debt repayment and getting spending under control, I'd still be stuck. You are an amazing support system!!!

mizbear - Sorry to hear about your not feeling good. Costal Chondritis - is this where you are having chest pains without any heart related problems? I have heard of this - it is an inflammation of the cartilage in the rib cage correct? I hope you feel better soon with some rest.
startsmart - I can imagine it was a hard day having to move your grandfather and deal with your uncle - who I remember you had real problems with when you lived with your grandparents.
azmom - Sorry to hear about the spate of bad news. That is really difficult.
mrslynch - WOW, that IS big news. Best of luck with the writing.
