Oh, that one! It was a good article. It's really appropos for many aspects of our lives, too! Thanks for sharing!

Dakota- We sold off a few tubs of them but the bulk are in three large Rubbermaid tubs. Except for the Robotics set that he got from my parents for Christmas. That is in a clear Rubbermaid tote with a lid and handle. But the rest just ended up in one big pile. DS liked to build them according to the directions once, look at them for a few days, and then tear them apart and create something new from his imagination. So we never really worried about keeping them separated into their "sets". We huge a couple of floating shelves in his bedroom so he could display his masterpieces until he took them apart to reconfigure them. Hope that helps. I laugh every time I see a meme that says anything along the lines of cursing someone with stepping on a Lego in the middle of the night.

Shelia- Thanks! We don't have any sets yet, but mini-D & DH have been hitting the Lego store fairly regularly to buy cups of Legos. Our issue is the small pcs, we've bought a few bead boxes to separate the different tiny pcs so they are easy to find and less likely to get lost or eaten by a dog . The rest we just toss in a bin, when they are done playing for the day. (I swear DH is more into them than mini-D sometimes. After mini-D goes to bed, he builds big involved things that mini-D doesn't have the patience to do.)

In my experience, you can entertain all the males in the room by throwing out a bunch of Legos on the table! That way, you can get something accomplished!

Restaurants- I like Ruby's it's a 50's style diner.
OMG I realized I've actually been to Ruby's! Blue eyes and I stopped there on our trip to LA - good food even if the waitress was a bit crazy. Sheila, when are you coming out to visit CA?! Legos - Um, you could distract me for several hours with a bag of legos. So much fun.... Well today was overwhelming (like 5 hours into my day lol) but I did get a client who signed on for another package at my highest rates. Just need to start setting up our calls for the next 3 months. But I'm stressed, the dogs are chasing flies all over the house, I'm dealing with vomit (Jackson had some trouble with the heat) and pee (since Wilson is being a brat while sick), trying to catch up on laundry and so many other things. My mastermind group ordered me to "self care" so I'm lounging on the couch and relaxing in front of the fan. Trying to stop pushing so much. Parts of my thoughts will probably end up on my blog, it's "my friend kelly" if you're interested.

Real Quick Check In. I had PT today and my legs hurt so much and I didn't even have then scrapped. I've been told NOT to run, again! *sigh* MRS.LYNCH: again, SO PROUD OF YOU! Sheila: Thank You so much. We are actually staying in a two bedroom, full kitchen condo inside a resort in Palm Dessert. They have pools and an activity pool (whatever that means), a recreation room (video and board games) and a movie theater that they play requested DVD's every night (one child, one adult film). We are pretty much planning on staying on site the majority of the time but just wanted to explore other options. It's crazy that we are going to a place hotter than we live but we own the timeshare down in PS and we know we have to go away in order for DH to take a "real" vacation from work. We have only stayed overnight in Palm Springs twice at the Thousand Oaks RV Resort on our way to Huntington Beach... Oh-and my husband is in sales so WE are normally the people who visit. He can talk to anyone about anything as if they were childhood friends. So we are used to "the friendly kind" because we live with one Ruby: Welcome Back! Moneysquirrel: It seems like the Summer Break has flown by. I have to get busy school shopping soon. Our school starts on August 8. Red: Tell Blue there is nothing lazy about being pregnant. I mean you are growing TWO little people! I'll have to catch up on the rest later. My house is a disaster area. Ponder this question in the meantime: What is one thing that is currently hindering you from obtaining a NSD/CSD AND what is one thing that is helping you achieve them?

startsmart: Not sure when I'll be back out that way. Hoping to sneak in a weekend at the Palm Springs house this winter. Super busy this summer and DH wants to go to Costa Rica for his 40th birthday some time in 2013 too. azmom- Palm Desert actually has more to do than Palm Springs does. The children's museum is in Palm Desert and it's closer to the water park and the air museum too. Palm Desert is a more flashy, newer area than downtown Palm Springs. Dakota- DH and DS started playing War Machine- it's a minitures game. They have been spending hours putting together their army (assembling, painting, etc) It keeps them engrossed for hours at a time. Very peaceful for me

dakota - Glad to hear your hand is feeling better.
startsmart - While I know dealing with certain family members can be very stressful, good job in stepping up to be an advocate for your grandfather.
azmom - Thanks for the kudos! Hang in there with the PT.
redruby - Hope you had a great vacation.
Mizbear - Mixed blessing about the apartment renovations. Honestly, if it were me, I would let mom know she had two choices: Get on board with the budget or she has 30 days to find someplace else to live.
Sorry if that sounds too harsh.
moneysquirrel - It was so nice to talk to you the other night. Thanks.
MrsLynch - I saw that notice on your FB page this morning - way to go!
********************************************
QOTW: I try very hard to stick with a list especially when I go to the Grocery Store. Mostly, being on such a tight budget and only getting unemployment is a real motivator as well. As is this goal I have to still retain a certain amount of cash in my savings account as of the first day of a new job.
COTW: Since I have joined this group I have several new ways of thinking.
* Since I quit smoking May 1st I have saved over $560. * It is okay to NOT keep up with the Joneses. * Life will not cease to have meaning if you do not buy something that is merely a "want". * Asking questions of creditors can be a GOOD thing. It is how I got Balanced Billing for utilities, a reduction in my car insurance premiums, a "pass" on late fees with my Association payment and how I found out about the COBRA reimbursement program through Unemployment. * There is a freedom in not feeling as though you need to keep "secret" your financial situation.
Ponder this question in the meantime: What is one thing that is currently hindering you from obtaining a NSD/CSD AND what is one thing that is helping you achieve them?
Hindering? = My addiction to Dunkin' Donuts Iced Coffee. Helping? = Not leaving the house, working on cleaning out one of the closets in the guest room.

Okay Ladies - I have a situation to run in front of you and am asking for your honest opinion. Hopefully by the end of this week please.
moneysquirrel - I already have your thoughts on this *winks*
Last month I got the confirmation about the students I will be hosting this year. A young lady from Germany and another from Vietnam. While I have heard from the German girl and gotten her parents' permission for the trip to Florida in September I have not yet heard back from the Vietnamese girl.
Well, turns out there is a reason for that. The agency called me yesterday about her. It seems that even after several requests the Embassy has denied her the J1 VISA she needs to come here for a year. So that leaves me with just one girl.
Now - here is the question / issue. A part of me feels as though I should accept another kid now and host two again. OR I just take the one girl and tell the agency that once I am working again I could be available to take another kid if during the year a student needs to be moved - which happens to at least two kids a year.
It would perhaps be less stressful taking care and feeding only one kids right now. So why do I feel as though I am somehow obligated to take a second kid now?
What do you think is the best option?

honey- I agree with your suggestion about DM
students- I would just take the one and let them know that you are available, but remind them that you have the trip planned. You are accustomed mentally to having the company of 2 students- perhaps it is more that than te feeling of obligation
working on something with the csd/nsd thing

Rocky Mtn Saver: 3 NSD, 4 CSD (<$5). No NSD's today, since I have to buy some software. Tomorrow, I need to buy a graduation present for a friend. But I'm going to shoot for NSD again on Saturday. We'll see!

6NS/CS I had a total impulse purchase. I don't do that much anymore, but the blank flashcards were so cute and I know we'll end up needing them for mini-D at some point. Honey- I'd say just stay with one student for now and offer to take in a second later if needed. You have a lot of stress right now anyway. QOTW- I try to shop from lists and do all my grocery shopping and errands on either Saturday or Sunday. COTW- About 3 years ago, a few months after I started on the thread we were spending $400 on average on eating out a month, now we've cut that in half, and some months don't even spend that. It has gone down even more this year as we are focusing on healthy eating and cutting out processed foods and that is hard to do in most restaurants. Plus I have you guys on my shoulder when I do want to spend asking me if I really need it or not.

Honey- my vote is to ease back in with one student for the year. You never know if someone else will have to shuffle their students and you'll end up with two. But stress wise, I say stick with one.
I need to tally up my NSD.... yesterday I ended up not spending a dime although when it was still 102 at 8pm I really, really wanted a sonic drink. Anything cold actually. But I took another cold shower and fell asleep watching tv.
Today should be pretty low key - working on getting my laundry caught up and I want to finish the cut in primer in the master bedroom. I'm so so close to being done!

Honey - I think taking one to start with is the way to go.
I just noticed my b00b is pulsing with my heartbeat. Weird. Sorry, TMI. lol.
So I totally caved at the ultrasound today. Plus I thought I could accurately guess. And I was right! A boy and a girl!!! (This is still super secret info so don't share it elsewhere please! Trying to avoid pink and blue stuff at my showers lol)

Red- That will be fun one of each. We did something similar we found out what we were having, but didn't tell anyone else, so I could buy boy stuff, but everyone else was buying green and yellow. I had a small stash of adorable baby boy clothes ready for him.

DH and I have eaten out every night this week and will eat out again tonight and tomorrow. I do not regret one penny. We have had the best one on one time just talking and enjoying each others company without the interruptions of any kids. Sure we could cook at home but we get sidetracked with all the house/yard work and it is easy to turn on the tv or get on the computer and check out (sad but true). RED: HOW SWEET! That is so exciting. So you get to use both names. So glad you are healthy and things are going well. Now to the most important parenting decision you and Blue have to make: How are you deciding the baseball fan fate of your kids? I see a Red Sox/Yankee war brewing (I side with the Sox out of sheer dislike for the Yanks) Oh- and pregnancy brings about all kinds of TMI moments and then there's childbirth and motherhood and...then the TMI just becomes a part of life Sheila: I forgot to mention we are driving there (4.5 hours of less) so we will have our own car. Honey: I truly think you should just have the one student and just be available if they are in need later on. I think with the stress having one is the most logical reason but I also know how big of a heart you have so staying open may help you feel like you are still willing to do more only if absolutely needed. Does this make sense? I never seem to be able to put my thoughts into words. That's why being a blogger makes logical sense

Azmom: I was just looking at my calendar and was determining what day to go school shopping too.
Honeylioness: I love your helping advice. I do stay home a lot. But I am getting a little couped up feeling after coming off a vacation with 19 people.

Just got great news when I called Home Depot to confirm our hardwood floor stuff. They had the wrong floor in there! The one we want is half as much, so we're saving $500 from what they originally quoted us. Phew! That just made my day!

6NS/CS. Yesterday we went out to eat. DH has been working really hard around the house to get it ready to go on the market and just wanted to go out last night, plus it was after 6 when I got home from work and it would have been pasta and meatballs at home.

Just checking in real quick while I am icing my legs, again. They scrapped my legs at PT this morning and while I am not bruised all over like before I am seriously bruised in the areas that are causing my pain. I guess that is a good thing.
Have any of you read the book The Hundred Dresses? It is so, so good. I highly recommend it. This Summer we have been reading a book as a family. I primarily read out loud but my son and daughter take on a couple of pages of out loud reading too. Anyhow, we read The Hundred Dresses today. It is only 80 pages and a quick read. It made me cry and it provided great conversation on the topic of bullying, sticking up for others, and people who are different than we are. It provided a great honest, eye-opening conversation with my kids. I LOVED it.
I'll catch up later.

Big old spend today! Massage (only had to pay the tip), groceries, chiropractor, a few things from Salvation Army (hello 50% off sale and $1.50 DVDs), and coffee cake at Starbucks. But it's been a good day, very relaxing and I closed a new client!

Climbing back on the NSD wagon officially in August. Reworking the budget and finishing up some stuff here around the apartment.
My incentive to stay on budget/ complete my NSD/CSD goals is to avoid confrontation with my mother and because it helps with my neves and weight loss goals.
Question for everyone- I am not big on material goals for the most part. I have a trip planned to NH and maybe one to Canada in the next couple years, but I don't do a whole lot of stuff. I am not interested in going to Disney or Vegas, etc. I want to buy a house, but I don't know that is a reasonable and attainable goal in this economy with my current situation. I need a goal. My mother thinks my goal should be to just keep going. I can get up without someone announcing it's almost dinnertime.

Yesterday was a big ole spend day too. School shopping. Shoes were buy one get one half off and I have two kids so yeah. Each got a good pair. Went a resale store and bought DD#2 jeans. 4pair for $32. American Eagle and Aero was in the mix. Then I bought a membership to Sam's and stock piled some stuff. My only problem with Sam's is it is 1.5 hours away, but me and a friend are committed to going once a month and take turns driving. I bought stuff that was on my grocery list for today it was just BIGGER. I'm am going to finish my shopping at Kroger today. 3/10NSD

Update: 7 NSD 4 CSD
Just a quick drive-by checkin to say hello and to update. I am still doing some decluttering projects around the house. Had several more doctor appointments this week with each of the next two week having one medical test scheduled. Then I will be finished all of the routine/yearly medical tests until next spring. I return to work on August 1st so after the last test I will have less than a week of vacation off.
Red -- So glad everything is going well. So excited for you. Start -- I am alway so amazed at everything you get done. It must be all that youthful energy. I think I had some of that decades ago. RedRuby -- Still need to get a few basics for school. Just haven't been in the mood to go to the mall and look. I think it is called denial -- coming too soon. Honey -- Glad I had the chance to "visit" with you last week. Did you make a decision? Azmom -- Take care of yourself. Follow the advice so that you can get back to doing everything you want to without injuring yourself again. MrsLynch -- Congrats. Dakota -- I can't believe that mini-D is getting so big. I guess that goes for all the DS and DD in the group. mizbear -- About your goals -- set reachable ones -- $XXX for new furniture for the new house. Put it somewhere with a decent interest rate and hard to get too -- like ING. When that is reached add another goal and repeat. This way you have the money saved and can later combine them for the larger goal of a house. I don't know if this will work for you given all you have to deal with but just an idea that you can adapt. It really doesn't matter what you tag the goal as just so you name it something.

Okay My NSD friends, PLEASE update your NSD/CSD days by Sunday night in bold. I would like to get the totals so far up on Monday morning and hand over Captain duties to Honey. Red: Yeah on the savings. I LOVE it when things come in under budget. Dakota: Good luck getting the house ready to sell. SS: Congrats on closing your new client! I love the Goodwill! Mizbear: I'm confused about your question. Are you wanting a goal to help keep you motivated to get NSD days or just a goal in general? Goals could be simple as a day to eat out, buying music, something for your house, craft supplies and I would consider giving. Nothing hurt more when we were living on a shoe string budget than not being able to give to the back to school drives or adopt a family during Christmas. Sorry if that doesn't help. After all my races I would treat myself to a Starbucks drink. If I come under our household budget I would allow myself to get something for the house, etc. What kept me motivated in the beginning was just putting a star on my self made index calendar to keep track of my NSD. The power of the star may seem silly but it worked! Red Ruby: That is awesome on the back to school shopping! I have three kids to shop for plus two of them start fall sports (football and softball) and they both have outgrown everything! We are very blessed that our older daughter gets more than enough hand me down clothes from friends of ours and our five year old has a birthday next week and grandma normally buys her a bunch of clothes Every little bit helps! Weekend Challenge: Do something this weekend that will make your week easier and/or more likely to get NSD. We are going out of town on Monday. We are staying in a full kitchen condo and make the majority of our meals there. We are taking staples with us like seasonings, flour, sugar, even cereal, olive oil and can goods. This helps curb our grocery spending as we will only need to buy perishables. I also plan on having the house cleaned so when we will return to a clean house. ~Happy No Spending~

Money squirrel - I haven't had a lot of energy lately but am pushing through!
Last night I finished priming the master bedroom, I barely had enough to cover the walls thick enough.
Today I went to find the paint I'm matching for the master bedroom and found 3/4 of a gallon left! So the entire room got a first coat. Could get 2 quarts for $22 or the gallon for $24 so I bought another gallon along with another can of white high gloss.
I'll do the next coat on the walls tomorrow in the morning so until then I'm working on the furniture.

Got lots done this weekend!
1. Painted shelving in nursery and figured out how many baskets to order for shelves. Ordered baskets. 2. Cleaned new glider of cat fur and covered with a towel for now, as it is Black Cat's new favorite spot and she sheds like crazy. 3. Fixed gate to pool deck. 4. Fixed chandelier. 5. Cleaned out wine storage cabinet and put actual booze in it (instead of random stuff we would shove there when doing quick cleaning because it had doors to hide the clutter). This opened up the corner of the dining room that has been full of bottles of booze for the last year. 6. Organized a pile of stuff to go into the attic (winter clothes, pre-preg clothes, file boxes, holiday wrapping paper). 7. Installed new shoe rack my stepdad made which helped open up a corner of the room as it uses previously unused wall space. And the cat boxes fit underneath! 8. Parents took old bureau, coffee table, and desk for use at their house; organized new bureau and desk in bedroom. Looks bigger and cleaner! Still a long way to go though. 9. Got together a bag of clothes for donation; threw out other holey or stained clothing.
And by "got lots done" i mean my parents and Blue did most of this, I observed and offered advice and input but they wouldn't let me paint or lift things so I was fairly limited. I did empty the dishwasher! lol. Feeling good about the progress being made everywhere. I need to schedule home depot for the floors though.
Very much looking forward to vacation next week... Blue and I both need it badly. Ah, babymoon.

13/31 NSD
My tip for getting NSDs!!! It has been easy to rack up NSDs this month with such extreme heat. I will go to any lengths not to leave the house. The two times I shopped this month it was at 5:00AM.
Redruby, I, too, live a long way from the closest Sam's Club, about two hours away. Once, or perhaps twice, a year a friend who does have a card takes me shopping and I pick up the lunch tab. Luckily for me, her favorite lunch out is a salad bar or a fast food burger. There are several things that I can do an "annual stock up" and save a bundle on by buying at Sam's. Of course, my car is as full as Santa's sleigh on the trip home.
Honey--I agree with the others , start with one student and be available if they need you later.

Hello ladies ... I hope everyone is staying cool and/or safe depending on where you live. Honestly, the weather the last couple of weeks has been scary. Thank you everyone who responded to my query about the exchange student (s). I see that either A: You all truly feel the same way or B: You all contacted each other to coordinate your replies. I will also tell you that moneysquirrel, my mother and my Thursday quilt group all agreed as well that I should take the one girl for now and let the agency know I am open to taking a second student later in the year after I get a job. Now I just have to find a way to properly write that answer back to my representative - especially since she sent me an e-mail on Friday asking if I had chosen a second student. OY ... for some reason I am having a stress reaction to telling her that for my own mental and financial well being I cannot do a second kid right now. Anyway - it has been incredibly hot and humid the last week or so, and this coming week is supposed to be even worse. So of course I chose today to do a heat-generating activity. For those interested I listed a few pictures so you can shake your head and ponder just how nuts I really am. livingwiththelioness.blogspot.com/2012/07/just-because-i-wasnt-hot-enough.htmlThis upcoming week promises to be busier than usual: Monday - A required lecture (aka seminar) at the Unemployment Office. There's two hours of my life I will never get back. AND I get to hear about how to do a job search. While I understand many people have no clue how to do this I am not one of them. Can you tell I am a bit annoyed? Tuesday - Extended appointment with my Chiropractor. I am having a chronic issue with the sciatic nerve on my right side. This morning I had a back spasm that it took me over 30 minutes to relax enough for me to get out of bed. Wednesday - A trek into downtown Boston for my yearly visit with my doctor and my bi-annual "female" examination ... oh joy. I also get to discuss a rather new and very bothersome issue with her. Thursday - Weekly all day quilting session at the local quilt shop. Which HOPEFULLY will not include this one particular woman who has the personality of a constipated barracuda. *Sighs* .... Anyone else notice that only part of this schedule has anything to do with me getting a job? It is hard to keep positive when the response rate to my networking and applications is so glacially slow.l
