The latest entry in her Caring Bridge journal:
September 17: CT results
Patty met with her Oncologist today to discuss the results of the CT scan she had done last week during her unexpected week off from treatment. While the results do show progression of her cancer in all areas (except her liver) compared to the last scan, it more importantly showed fluid and inflammation on her lungs, as well as growth in the lesions there. Patty has been experiencing some shortness of breath and a wet cough lately. Her Oncologist wants to deal with this issue before it could possibly turn into pneumonia. She has not been receiving the recommended steroid shot typically given with the Chemo treatments lately due to side effects from it.
Dr Gall, her Oncologist, believes the fluid on her lungs could be due in part to the skipped steroids allowing the Chemo drug to become too toxic for Patty's body. The fluid/inflammation could also be just part of her disease progressing too. He suggested a 3 week break in treatment to start, daily use of a low dose oral steroid to fight the inflammation and a ZPak antibiotic to hopefully ward off the risk of pneumonia developing. We will meet with Dr Gall in 3 weeks to discuss what's next (the possibility of Patty continuing on an even lower dose of the same Chemotherapy if the fluid/inflammation problem is solved or a discussion about Hospice care).
Patty did express to us today that she will doing a lot of thinking over the next couple of weeks to decide if she is ready to stop treatment. This Chemotherapy drug and its side effects have been fairly taxing for her and will only continue to be harder the longer she is receiving the treatment. This Chemotherapy is considered "salvage" treatment and as the result of the CT showed today, her cancer is continuing to progress during treatment.
Thank you all for checking in on Patty and leaving her such wonderful comments!

There has been an update on Patty's Caring Bridge page. It appears the chemo is not working to stop the progression of Patty's cancer and it sounds like no more will be given. Patty is able to get around for now and will enter hospice care when she's no longer able to do so. She's fought the good fight and is truly an inspiration. Be blessed, Patty. We have certainly been blessed by you.

Indeed she is, and I think of her often.
I got an email from Robert Not Bobby, and he asked me to post this on his behalf.
The Walmart shorts teared me up. It is an inside joke, @robert not Bobby you are sweet. I saw a picture of Patty, her son and her peanut just yesterday, she is still smiling.

There have been no updates since the 15th of October. I sure hope Patty is getting along as well as possible. I can only imagine what they're all feeling and going through right now. So very, very sad.

I am pretty sure that Patty is doing fine considering everything. Her family have been very good with letting us all know her progress, i think that we should treat this news blackout as no news is good news.
She will always be in my thoughts.

The 2 most recent updates are below. I'm sorry to say that the news is not good.
December 11: Update
Written Dec 10, 2013 6:22pm
Patty's health has taken a turn for the worse since the beginning of the month. She was experiencing more pain (which is now under control) and feeling the side effects of increased fluid on her lungs again.
This past Friday (Dec 6th), Patty went in to have the fluid drained. She was able to have only one side partially drained due to pain. It helped to relieve some of the symptoms, though since that appointment we are seeing major signs of declining health.
We are currently waiting for Hospice to return our call to set up an evaluation so we can begin utilizing the services they provide. Patty is resting comfortably. We spent a good part of the day with her today, she enjoyed visiting with her Grandson, Leo, quite a bit.
We will update this site daily or as needed, as things progress. Thank you everyone for your support!
December 11: Hospice
28 minutes ago We met with Hospice yesterday. A Nurse and a Social worker came out to talk to us (Patty, her son Nate, his wife, Jess and Patty's mother, Rose) the nurse also evaluated Patty's health.
They went over a lot of information with us, most importantly they will be changing Patty's pain medications to stronger medications (morphine) that will work more effectively, as Patty had a fair amount of pain yesterday. Hospice will also have a new oxygen machine delivered that can accommodate a higher level of use for Patty.
The Nurse that assessed Patty's health let us know, that based on the rapid progression of her disease, it is unfortunately most likely that Patty will not make it to Christmas. While it's difficult to accept that, Patty's body truly is shutting down. She is sleeping more every day and tends to be confused when she is awake amongst other things that are signs that her life is coming to an end. We have been preparing ourselves, as her family, for awhile now as her cancer was diagnosed a year and a half ago at a Stage 4. Her Doctor often reminded us that her disease was incurable despite the use of the Chemotherapy drugs.
There will be another Nurse coming out today, this Nurse will visit regularly. She will have the new medications to help Patty rest more comfortably.

So very sad. Even though I've known from the beginning, it still hurts. May her passing be peaceful and her family find solace in that. Hospice will help with that result.

I saw the message on Patty's carebridge page and it fills me with sadness. Although we all knew there would be no cure for Patty the finality of her condition has hit me and I have been feeling sad and thinking a lot about that vivacious, carefree, honest real person I met on the MSN boards, several years ago now. I hope now that she finds peace and comfort in her days surrounded by her family and loved ones who have always been so very important to her. “You were born a child of light’s wonderful secret— you return to the beauty you have always been.”

I will imagine her crossing over while dancing over with white Doves surrounding her. So sad. May Patio's last moments be filled with love and may it be gentle on her. It's been almost 2 years since mom passed on the 23rd of December. Christmas being her favorite holiday was extra cruel and hard. Her house was all decorated so I was glad she got to enjoy her efforts and the beauty she created in her home.
