"Do you still have your pink satin jacket, Tina? " Wrong era...but I "might" still have some Aqua Net, a teasing comb and frosty blue eye shadow was your nickname Mimi by any chance?

I graduated in the late 70s. Grew up in a small town that was mostly factories. Your parents either were factory workers or owned a small business, was a schoolteacher, etc.. Guess which one I was? Anyway the 'rich' kids went to college, some 'poor' kids either went to community college or got a good job out of high school. (you could do that back then without a college diploma. YAY for the 70s!) I still live in the small town and see classmates all of the time. But for some reason the 10 year, dressed up and DH in a suit, was like being back in HS. People grouped together just like they did years ago. 15 year was better. The 'rich' people didn't come, I guess they had proven themselves at the 10. But I asked a classmate parents mom one day why the classmate didn't come to the 15 and the mom said 'she wasn't married, didn't have children and didn't really fit in'. SHE DIDN'T FIT IN? Now she knew what some of us felt like in HS.
**I need to clarify 'poor'. We didn't have our own car at 16, we drove our parent's car. We had to work, either at the mall or McDs. We had to buy our own clothes, usually at K-Mart, not a name brand store. Any money that we made helped pay the car insurance and gas. We bought our own yearbooks, class ring and school pictures. The really 'poor' kids didn't have a class ring or graduation announcements, wore the same clothes and walked to school in the rain if they lived less than a mile from the school.

My girlfriend tried to interact with the once popular group and was pretty much ignored. I found the popular girls to be genuinely nice 30 years later (at least, the ones who showed up at the reunion). Late in the evening, I did notice them all clustered at one table and found that old HS paranoia coming back. "They're talking about me. They're making fun of me. I'm sure of it." I realized that, having spent much more time with each other, they shared a history I knew only peripherally and it was pretty natural for them to end up together.

We have had 2 of our 8th grade graduating class reunions. I have been unable to attend both of them, but have reconnected with 3 people that I enjoyed being friends with way back in 1958...yes, 1958!!!
However, one of the other girls was on my high school alumni assn. board and decided since she didn't go to grade school with me (she had moved) but we did attend the same high school.... and didn't remember me from a old fence post, got a hold of my email address, married name, address and phone. That's when the bombardment started from the high school alumni assn.
Finally, a few months ago, I emailed the culprit, and nicely told her to remove ALL information regarding me from alumni assn. and to stop sending me emails.
Those 4 years of high school were the worst of my life... didn't want to live through it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And then there's me - married, one kid, and nothing great on the career front. Not how I envisioned my life at 29. Wow, I think you really MIGHT be me. Except for the three years younger part. The partiers at my school were split into two groups though - one that had their fun on weekends but didn't let it get in the way of achieving shit during high school, and they generally did well. And one that figured this was as good as it got and did nothing else during high school. They mostly went on to community college and AFAIK aren't doing anything especially impressive.

I went to my 10th, but not my 20th. #30 will be in 2014, I might just go to that one.

I'm shocked that people would go somewhere and hang out with old friends they hadn't seen in years, instead of talking to people they never had a connection with. That is just odd.

Like muttley, it was mostly because I didn't fit in. I did well academically and I had a decent number of friends but I felt like I was suffocating the entire time. The idea of going away to college helped me get up in the morning. My problem was I was nerdy but I was also the best track athlete in my class and continue to hold a couple school records that up until this year were still standing (they might have been broken this year). My friends were also nerdy, but they did theatre instead of track & field/cross country. My best friend didn't care, but there was definately a rift at the lunch table with the other girls when I decided theatre wasn't me. Only 2 other girls in my class ran track and they were "popular", so I didn't fit in there either. I fit in a little better with the girls a year older than me, but even though they were smart, I was just a bit too much of a nerdy to really fit in. It was awkward. College rocked though. I ran track for a year and since it was an engineering school, everyone was nerds. But how many other people can say they were salutatorian of their high school class and continue to own high school records over a decade after they graduated? ;D

Yeah, kind of like those people who friend me on FB that never said two words to me 20 yrs ago. It cracks me up when I get those request...

This was kind of the way my high school was. There were a lot of us who partied on the weekends but still did well in school. Most all went on to college and now have decent jobs. Then you had what we called "heads" back then. They were basically your group that was going no where and stayed high or drunk most all the time. I could never figure why that group even bothered to show up. From what I know most of them are now working minimum wage jobs.

I just realized that my high school was a replica of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." I still love that movie...

" I guess I'm sort of like this but I never thought high school was as good as it would ever get...even though I had a blast in high school, that would have been depressing to think that would be the highlight of my life...it's not just the jocks that think like that...look how many here STILL quote their high school achievements!lol I BARELY passed high school, not because I wasn't smart but because life was too much fun....after graduation I got my shit together, went to community college (just like you all guessed!lol) and then transferred to a private college where I graduated with a 3.81. Now I make damn good money and am nothing like the person I was in high school (though I still love to have a good time). so don't count out all of the partiers....a lot of us can pull it together and outearn a significant % of the high school bookworms

Nope. I heard that someone is organzing a 10 year reunion but never recieved anything. I read about it as a facebook post on someone else's wall. Oh well, whoever does the organzing for these things seems to do a pretty crappy job of it. I don't want to see 95% of the people I went to high school with anyhow. I went with DH to his 25th and it was fun they had it at the casino so that gave me something to do because I didn't know anyone. He had a blast. How old is your husband?

MM, but you left out an important detail...were you an overachiever or a partier? I am seeing a theme in this thread and I want to see if it holds true....

But see.. High school is the time to do every stupid thing you can think of... as long as you're under 18... you don't have to serve hard time... I realize that now. But I was too dorky to try anything really bad - other than underage drinking. I had the opportunity to try some weed, but I chickened out. No one pressured me or made fun of me for not doing it. I miss my grocery store friends. We stayed out late after work and just had a good time. Sigh....

Here is a bit of high school gossip - there was a girl who went to my high school (this is actually after I graduated) who had an affair with a gym teacher/football coach and this idiot (teacher/coach) actually video taped it. At one point he was bragging to the other coaches about this affair and they didn't believe him so this fool actually showed them the video tape One of the other coaches ended up turning him in and criminal charges were brought against him. He was sentenced to 2 yrs in jail. What a freaking dumbass!!!

And when we graduated, not one but TWO male teachers were found to have gone on Senior Week with some of the more popular girls. And there were pictures.... They were cute, but how fucking dumb do you have to be? Even if the girls were legal, why would you risk your career? One of the guys was the son or nephew of the assistant principal.
