Dean! You are 'glass half empty' kinda persona aren't you? Nope, not a half glass empty type of guy, just a realist, growing up I worked on mechanical breakdowns every day, I still work with mechanical breakdowns on a daily basis, as a result, I try to avoid things that can cause things to break down and give me or others a headache. If that means I need to take an extra minute to do something small, so be it, I have seen people lose limbs because they hurried a little bit in repairing or maintaining equipment, my wife almost lost her finger one day because she got in a rush and didn't follow all the correct steps in something she was doing, just not worth the rush if it can cause a problem. No one cares! Reallly!!!!!!!!! |

Some of the better stores had rudimentary cameras. Ours did, but it was mostly observation done by blending in with the crowd. We had to look like average shoppers, and watch for the signs: nervousness, the empty bags, the big baby strollers (the ones with the large diaper bags attached that appeared to have nothing in them, or the ones that had the baskets underneath), the people who would take clothing into the dressing rooms and hang items strategically (blocking the line of sight under the door and walls.

So, 30 years ago. Was that before the cameras & everything? Did you walk the store looking for suspicious activity? I like that your title was store detective, never heard that before. "Store detective" was a common job title before electronic surveillance became the norm. I worked in an upscale department store in Beverly Hills when I was in college, and many of the store detectives were women. They were considered less obviously "store detectives" and they and their male colleagues woud, indeed, follow suspicious people around. I had an older friend talk about how he seemed to appear suspicious when he was younger. He would talk about how he got to the point where instead of being annoyed that he was always watched that he would just start messing with them. He said he would go into a department store & put on an expensive coat & then wander around the store for a few hours while people watched him the whole time. He thought it was hilarious. Must have been back in the day of store detectives. |
