Yesterday was a spend. DH bought stuff for the deck project and I sunscreen and bug spray for it too. ;D
Joining a CSA, is going to really help my grocery budget I think. Since we just go and pick up the basket every week, I'm finding I'm not needing to run to the store for that kind of stuff and haven't actually been to the grocery store in 2 weeks. I will need to go before Sunday because we used the last of our baking powder and mini-D would be heart broken if we didn't have waffles. Though I think I've seen a way to make your own from baking soda and cornstarch, so I may do that instead.
3cats did you get the phone working?

Honey: Congrats on the non smoking! As for dentist's my mom took my DSIS and I to a dentist that I think used our teeth to get the money he needed, not working on them because they needed it. My mouth is full of fillings, strangely enough since I have been an adult and going to the dentist of my choosing I have had 2 fillings and two cracks repaired. Of course if I didn't have the fillings my teeth wouldn't have cracked. Anyways I feel for you.
mizbear: glad mom is getting the help she needs.
So what does everyone here do for phones? Here is my delema I am using an old razor and no texting. All of our phones (my mom is on our plan) are up for new phones but since I don't know what to get we haven't done anything. While I am tempted to get a smart phone so I can use it for kids entertainment, my music etc I don't want the data charge of $30 a month. I am really tempted to call Verizon and see if they will work with me if I threaten to leave. One can go with many other companies for $110 for 3 lines unlimited phone, text and a small amount of data. Plus them my mom can ditch her landline and instead of giving us only $12 a month she would pay her full share which would come to a little over $30 a month. ACK too much to think about.
We do have a home phone through the internet. Since I have called a few times and threatened to cancel we have a minmial package for $5.00 a month, fee incoming calls and we pay a small amount perminute if we call out. Basically we have in case we need to fax something.

Phones: I recently (about 3 months ago or so) cancelled my cell contract with AT&T, who I'd been with for almost 20 years, and went to TMobile no contract. I had a fairly basic plan with AT&T that was costing me $65 a month, with a discount through work. I tend to use maybe 2-300 voice minutes and about the same texts per month. It was outrageous. With TMobile, they have a $50 unlimited talk, text and web plan OR $30 for 1500 talk or text (any combination) and a small amount of web. I bought their no contract smartphone (Samsung Dart) but honestly, I didn't really like it, nor do I feel I need a smartphone since I have internet at work, at home, and an IPad. I had them unlock my AT&T phone I had been using and went back to using that. I did the $50 plan this month, but am going back to the $30 plan next month. I also like that you can change your plan from month to month to meet your needs. I was really nervous about switching but, personally, I think it's been a great move.

I think Virgin Mobile has nice, inexpensive no-contract offerings too. I was thinking of switching to them, but stuck with Tracfone for now. I'm all about the no-contract phones! I don't have a smartphone either. Like constanz, I have wireless at home, internet at work, and have an iPod if I feel the need to surf the web on a mobile device. All I wanted out of my phone was to make calls, texts, and maybe send pictures.

Yesterday was a spend because I got my prescription for Zofran. I feel a lot better, so much more like myself! I feel like next week I can start working out again even if it is going for a walk which would help me feel so much better about myself. Amazing what the world looks like when you don't feel like throwing up every 2 minutes.

Mk- last year dh and I upgraded to smartphones. It was the best and worst thing we could have done. We love our phones. Love the ability to check email on the go. No need to take the laptop on trips anymore and it has been great on so many levels. But our phone bill went up $50 a month when we should not have spent the money on that. Plus I feel locked in, like we can't downgrade even if we wanted to because we like having smartphones so much. My biggest complaint is that I have windows phone and dh has an android. This means we have hard time sharing stuff between our phones. I really like the windows phone, but the aps just aren't there for it yet. So I feel little left behind in the ap world.

I am using my old phone. I duck taped it back together and it works so I am using it. I need to get some numbers off of it for the new one but I am not activating it just yet. I will keep the numbers for when I need it. I spent today because I needed new work shoes. My other ones were rubbing a blister on my big toe. There was blood under the nail and a Physician's Assistant said it was from the shoes being too small. I always buy Wide shoes but I made a mistake and bought regular width. So I am at; 23 NSD, 23 NEO, $100 in savings. I also ate breakfast out this morning and it was good. No regrets on the spending today. I love my TracFones, old and new.

re:phones I am probably the worst person to ask if you're going the budget route. Mine was spendy but it's a business necessity in my line of work. And I didn't pick it out, just told Blue eyes what I needed and he did all the research and chose it for me. Lucky too because now we have the same phone, the same Mac, the same iPad... he's my on call geek squad so that makes it easier And I don't mind the cost, it's pretty useful and has some fun features like the panoramic. Let's see if I can post the image from our trip to the grand canyon...

Update: 14 NSDs and 7 CSDsFinished with exams and graduation -- just a week of meetings and school will be over. Have a ton of things to do. This time of the year requires a lot of housework to make up the hours I spent on schoolwork and neglected the house. Will be spending most of tomorrow knocking out a lot of it. I do need to get a few items at Home Depot so I will make a quick trip there tomorrow -- it is tax free day on hurricane supplies so will pick up anything I need for that. Mainly batteries -- I use them all year long so I will see which sizes I am short on.

Warning: Rant ahead
Ug, so frustrated that I need to vent! my parents are in town today to do work on the house (they're investors so sweat equity and all that) and I am so annoyed! #1 thing on the list I gave them 2 weeks ago was to replace 2 broken toilets and it's 6pm and still not done. They got up here at 11am then my dad sat around reading for 2 hours. Finally we got out to the store to buy the toilet tanks (already had bowls) and he refuses to look at the bowls I had saying he knows what we need.
We get home with the tanks and he just plays around. Spends 20 minutes trying to trap my dog under a plastic tub. Finally gets the toilet removed. I take out the wax seal, we have lunch and he decides to take an hour long nap. Finally at 4pm we're working on the rest of the install when he discovers the toilet bowl isn't standard size, the bolts won't line up meaning it would leak and the seal is the wrong size. So we need different tanks. Possibly twice as expensive or impossible to find tanks. And since they bought the bowls (without me) on clearance it's not like we can return them.
And what kills me is that he is blaming me telling me to call all the stores about something which I have zero knowledge about! When I explained that "this is why you're here, this is what you came to help me with." he got all defensive and mad. Well, I am mad. We wasted the entire frakking day sitting around, waiting for you to do one thing. And it's still not done. If I knew how to do this on my own it would have been finished 6 months ago! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
I really hate relying on unreliable people. I swear if the last time I did electrical work on my own I had not given myself a mild electrical shock then I should be working on the new outlets right now.

start; I know just how you feel!!!!! I have been asking DS to do this and do that for me for the last couple of years. Last year we were going to get the insulation for the other room and put it in. I have been after him to put the towel racks up so I don't have to throw the towels over the shower. He did his new deck this year and told me he would put mine on also with a walkway to the cars. His deck is on and that is it. They got a new pool and that had to go up before he could print out some work on his printer. It still is not printed. I think I am going to buy a printer for my laptop and let it go at that. If he prints it out for me I will probably have to buy ink for his printer before it is finished. I am going to have to put my CC's away because I started spending the other day and I am still spending. I have been so good for so long and now I am slipping. I am also eating out when I have a fridge full of food to eat. Oh well, I know what I need to do. I just have to do it. update: 23/31 NSD, 23/31 NEO. I think I will still make 25 and I think that was my goal.

Startsmart - I have done quite a bit of home repair/renovation and have been concerned about you buying tanks for the clearanced toilet bowls. Take one of them with you tomorrow. Also look into the possibility of just buying new toilets = total cost could be as low as $75 each or less. Also, down here on the central coast of CA builders will replace them for free if your old one is not low flow in order to obtain permits. A toilet is simple to do - all you need is the strength to drop it on the wax seal cleanly - if your father can't/won't maybe a friend can help you. Internet is great as are how to books. Regarding electricity - make sure the breaker is off and use pliers with rubber covered handles! PM me if yo need mor info as I am a great electrician and plumber, fair painter but lousey locksmith. lol
3 Cats - printers are really cheap now. You can get a good quality HP forabout $65 to $75 by watching ads at Staples, etc. They are all plug and play which means just plug it in. PM me if you want more info as I used to do business/office set-uos on a budget.
Please forgive me for butting in here - long time lurker and bored tonight plus my father is driving me crazy. Really need to join next month for accountability on spending, etc.

Sarajese- welcome and thanks for de-lurking! I was so annoyed I just had my dad handle it. He found out that the entire chain of stores does not carry compatible tanks meaning when one location went out of business they pulled these ones out of a warehouse and sold them cheaply. Dad talked them into taking back the bowls and replacing them with a compatible one. Both finally got installed around 10pm.
I did my best not to scream when I mentioned all the other work to be done and dad left at 6am for the flea market... And said he'd try to get the baseboards removed. Sigh. Why do I go through the trouble of making a list, writing out the tools needed and sending it to him FOUR times before he comes up and still we have issues? They are here and willing to work maybe twice a year so I really have to squeeze everything in and it takes me weeks to get everything ready.
3cats- forgive me if I'm remembering this unclearly but don't you own the house your not so dear son is living in? What would happen if you sold or evicted him and rented to someone who would not treat you this way? Could you get enough on the sale for a finished apartment or on the rental to hire someone to finish your room and bathroom? I just hate how he treats you for all that you've done in recent years for him and his family.
Also, I know it's easy to let guilt hold you captive to someone taking advantage of your kindness, but let me share something about my grandpa who lives here in town. I lives with him and grandma for a year, took care of them in the 5 years of assisted living. Blue eyes knows I wont move from this area for awhile because grandpa needs an advocate and someone to check in on him and that's me. However. When grandpa drank he was mean, abusive and hateful. Even after he got sober he wasn't very warm with his family. My uncle still doesn't see him often and this uncle is his health care proxy and executor! Grandpa had a stroke when I was 5 yo. We never read books together, or went fishing or played games. He yelled at me for sitting in his recliner and leaving my stuff in the living room when I visited. We were not close in the traditional sense. But he's family. For 65 years he was my grandmas husband. He raised my mom and if anything gave her a reason not to drink when I was growing up. So it doesn't matter that we have never had a conversation beyond the few words he can still say. I'm there if he's in the ER or needs new shirts or is celebrating his sobriety date. Which is why I just can't fathom why your son can't print out a sheet of paper! 3cats, the fedora brigade is waiting on the word... Just say when and where and we'll beat some sense into him.

Anybody getting hit with this rain/thunderstorm that is hitting the country right now? I am but not hard yet. It is to be very bad later. We have warnings and watches right now. It is thundering and the cats are all hiding, except for the white one. She looks around when she hears the thunder but doesn't go anywhere. update: 24/31 NSD, 24/31 NEO, $100 in savings.

Startsmart - great job on dealing with your father! Constanzz = did you at least buy some fun stuff? Yeah, it was all clothes....I am kind of beating myself up over buying so much. I have SO many clothes, but I lost 15 pounds since January. I thought I had enough spring and summer stuff and did buy a few things early this spring. But, I'm still frustrated with the way stuff fits/looks. One day last week, i think I changed my clothes 7 times before I found something I was comfortable wearing, that I thought looked half way decent. I am also trying to change my mind set a bit about clothes. I have always shopped sale/clearance and usually shop the end of the season for the next season and that didn't work out for me this year with the weight loss. I feel like my body has changed in my 40's (shocker, right?!) and the cheap stuff I used to buy on clearance looked ok, now, it seems, not so much. So, I am trying to be a bit more "selective" in what I buy, buy stuff that flatters me, not just cuz it is 5.99 on clearance. I feel like I'm trying to justify my spend...sigh...it is what it is. I'll deal with it and move on. I will go through my closet and find some stuff to take to the consignment shop. I feel guilty spending the money, although it was the money I just made from my yard sale, I really wanted to use that money, at least half of it, to pay on debt. I have very little willpower and I get mad at myself over it!

startsmart - Gorgeous pics! Sorry about the frustrating weekend with your parents.
constanz - At some point we do have to have clothes. If you will wear them and they will last you a while, then it was a good buy. My clothes spending was a little high for May, but I bought DS 2 pairs of shoes from stride rite (in the next 2 sizes bigger) to take advantage of a coupon (and because he needed shoes) and then I went ahead and bought a few maternity items to get me through the summer to take advantage of a sale. I was going to need those items at some point and so I tried to get what I needed at the best price possible.
moneysquirrel - Congrats on getting through another year.
It was a crazy weekend over here. First, we went cash only for groceries. SCARY. Although I had a very short list because the last 2 weeks had been big spends (one to stock up and one for my special dinner for my parents and uncle - yeah we spent $70 on that). DH helped his Dbro#1 Friday night, all day Saturday, and Sunday afternoon and evening. Saturday, DS and i picked up KFC and went over to BIL#1s house to feed to guys. I should have just hit the grocery store next door and save us some money, but it was good. Today, MIL, BIL#1, DH, DS, and myself squeezed into our Murano (it was a squeeze because of DS's car seat) and went to BIL#2's house about 60 miles away. It is actually this little apartment complex in the middle of nowhere. But it is only 20 miles from his job and rent is only $250 a month for a one bedroom unit! Plus it is only a mile off of a major state road and 3 miles off of a freeway (that takes him to work). It was a nice place. Nice and quiet. He'd had trouble finding a place not too far from work and away from the train tracks. So, this was a find for him. I made cookies last night (from supplies I already had), so all we paid for was gas to get there.
Physically, I totally overdid it this weekend. I slept pretty poorly every night and am just beat. Even on prescription anti-nausea meds the lack of sleep kicks my nausea into full gear and I actually was hanging over the toilet again late last night. Anyway, one week until I go to the doctor and I am getting excited. We are still behind at work. I'd hoped to write a report this weekend, but with DH being gone so much, I ended up doing more housework in the evenings and then needing a nap every afternoon because of sleeping poorly. So, i guess the plan is just to get a great night's sleep tonight and hit it hard tomorrow at work.
Hope everyone had a great weekend and has a great week.

Little screwdrivers- As the woman who has a toolbox that attracts men (I don't need an LBD- I have more tools than I have toolbox- this could be why my latest TV hangup is HGTVs hottest Canadian construction super)- I buy my mini screwdrivers at the dollar store. I had a really expensive set- and they fell apart.
HUGS to everyone. DM to chemo in the AM and the dr in the PM for a nasty infection.

Rocky Mtn. Saver: 7/31 NSD, 9/31 CSD (<$5). Wow, with the long weekend, I feel like I haven't posted in ages! I didn't get much in the way of NSD's, so I may not make my goal for the month. But that's the way the cookie crumbles! I'll just make my play for frugality for the next three days and see how it goes.

Hey all hope people had a nice Memorial Day. I had 1 NS's and 3 spends over the long weekend. I bought a bike off Craigslist and it is true, you don't forget how to ride a bike. I'm not really comfortable on it, but I can stay upright. DH is going to look into raising the handle bars a bit for me. The good news a new one with helmet and accessories was going to be over $300, this one came in just over $100 for everything. If I really decide I like bike riding (highly unlikely, I never liked it as a child), I will buy a better bike next year or the year after.
We got the floor of the deck laid Friday/Saturday. Sunday we did stuff around the house. Yesterday we went to a couple parties. DH & I are barely speaking, because there were older kids (youngest was 8, so a substantial age difference) at the first place and they were watching shows that weren't appropriate for mini-D. I know I'm a crunchy mom and try to limit his exposure to certain kinds of things and I don't want to impose that on other peoples kids. So I wasn't going to ask them to watch something else. I was trying to get him away from the TV, but he was throwing a fit. DH refused to back me up on that parenting decision and pretended he didn't see it going on. Then my MIL told me "It is only a TV show let him be with the other kids". I was so pissed at that point that she is lucky I didn't take her head off.
I did get a batch of yogurt made. It came out much thicker this time. I used greek yogurt as a starter and added some powdered milk.
This week is going to be busy. DH's grandpa, aunt and uncle are in town, plus there is a funeral Thursday night DH needs to go to.
Gin- Congrats
Muttley- I hope you got some sleep.
3cats- You can stop the spending, just take a deep breath and focus on something you can do at home.
Rocky- Long weekends are hard for me too.
Start- Sorry your weekend wasn't as productive as you'd like it to be.

Finally A NSD yesterday! I really need to get with the program and soon! Our Summer income gets cut in half and I am in for a rude awakening!
Yesterday I had a meeting at Starbucks and my coffee was paid for. I took the kids to a Summer Movie (already paid for) and a friend gave me a coupon for a free popcorn! Already had a plan for lunch and dinner- Go Me.
Vent/Dilemma/Advice Needed: So at the end of April I thought my time in my moms group was done. I have personally outgrown the need for the group several years ago but I felt the need to serve and because of that have been in a leadership position the last several years. Anyway- I believe I am headed toward the direction of teaching and know that eventually I will go the public speaking route (sharing my story and other teaching moments) It is not something I necessarily want to do-heck I am terrified at the thought but I really feel like that is what my heart is being prepared for- ANYWAY. So I was planning on just seeing where next year (meaning August) I could serve (or not) in the women's ministry at our church. I was asked yesterday (at the Starbucks meeting) to stay in the moms group but as a Mentor Mom Coordinator. Each table has a mentor mom (someone who has been there done that and could provide wisdom so to speak) and a table leader (someone in their shoes now who helps facilitate discussions and arranges play dates, Moms Night Outs and keeps their table informed about the ins and outs of moms) We meet as a group but have smaller tables for discussion and small setting purposes. Your more likely to share with the same 6 women you see every week than with a big group of 40+. Last year I was in charge of the table leaders. Part of what I would be responsible for doing is teaching every so often. Anyhow I know that the teaching part will be a stepping stone to where I need to be but I'm not sure if I want to be part of moms. Ugh...I'm just trying to decide which direction to go. If I don't do this then I will likely just participate in a Bible Study as a student not in leadership at all and that sounds good too. Sorry for the long rant. I just can't seem to figure out the pros and cons on this and it is driving me crazy. They need to have a team by Friday and if I am going to say no I want to give her time to ask someone else but I am torn. What I am really torn about I guess, is this will be the first year all my kids will be in school and I don't know what that means for me yet.
AND...I ran my first post injury 5k on Saturday in 29:49 not stellar but I beat last years time. I'll have a post on my blog about it tomorrow!

Yay Gin!! I'm so excited for you!! Congrats! When are you due? Yaaaaaay!
startsmart - sorry your dad frustrated you, but glad you finally got it all worked out. Motivation is something my parents never lack when they come down for a "working weekend," which they're even more gung-ho to do now that it's helping prep for babies. When I want to take a break they get me onto the next project (don't worry, they DO let me rest and all that now I'm preggo). Sorry your dad didn't have the gung-ho this weekend!!
constanz - sounds like you needed new clothes, and quality is definitely the way to go!! Don't guilt yourself so much!! I spent quite a bit on maternity stuff, but I need more than four shirts to wear to work. It's a need sometimes. Enjoy your clothes!
azmom - hugs. I don't know what the answer is but hope you figure it out and are good with whatever you decide.
So, we finally got the pool up and running yesterday. It took us a while to get the opening kit because parades everywhere were blocking our routes to pool stores, but I blindly found my way through backroads I'd never been on before. Yay for a sense of direction! The pool has already gone from gross green to a pretty (but leaf-strewn) blue. I'm very excited to have it back this year. I really thought we'd have to rip it out and sell the new pump on craigslist. So YAY!
But on the downside, today DH lets me know that our AC is broken. Again. It was fine for two days and today stuff just stopped working. HOping it's an easy fix or something that's NOT spending $8k on a new system. I thought we'd crossed this off the list, but apparently not.
The wedding was fun, glad to see BFF so happy. I made lots of people cry with my MoH speech (success!) and looked pretty damned good in my dress, so that was fun. I missed Blue though. He had a blast at his wedding up in Maine, although it was a LOT of drinking. I guess it's good I didn't go, because I'd have been bored and sober lol. But I missed seeing that group of friends.
So yeah, a busy but productive weekend. Just crossing my fingers that the AC isn't going to be super expensive or hard to fix. Right when we were making progress (pool running, fence almost done, plants flowering)... there's always something, right?
