Well, I just had my first good CVS trip in a long time. I had been out of it so long that I didn't have EBs to start with. So considering that, I think I did great. (I will say that I used three cards - mine, my moms, & my brothers).
For $40.48 OOP, I got: 7 12-pks CVS Earth Essentials TP *This is the lowest price for these @ $5 each. I need to get several more to stock up. Cheapest TP deal around! 3 Blink tears *Found a few of the $4 peelies to sweeten that deal 2 PF concealers *Were $5.99 each, had to get the mgrs to force-print the EBs 3 Hallmark cards 1 bottle mustard 8 boxes pH tampons *On clearance for $.75 each, I opened up 6 boxes to get out the $1 coupons to make them FREE! 2 CVS nutrition shake powders *Clearance $.99 each
And I have $34.97 in EBs to get ready for next week. I will use them on the diapers, and then be right back down to very few EBs again. We rarely get good paper deals around here, so this TP for $5 is my rock-bottom. Stacked with the other deals & using EBs (and $4/20 that I was lucky to get) its a killer deal this week. 1pk lasts us about 2 months, so 5 more should get us to a 2-yr supply. Its been awhile since I have seen this sale, and I really don't know when they will have it again, so I am stocking up now.

I don’t think I posted this: Jewel (Albertsons) has 14.5 oz red gold tomatoes on B2G1 Free. The red gold web site has a $1/3 coupon. OOP = 0.87 for the 3 cans inc tax. Did the deal Friday. Got a Catalina for $1 off any produce w/o an restriction as amount spent on either produce or in total.

TM - if that's the kind you like, it sounds like a decent price. They have really changed how many sheets are on a roll now (seems like it used to be 300+, now its more like 200 sheets). That's why I stick with the 1,000 sheet rolls because they just last longer. With a $4/20 I got them for $.33/roll, which is the lowest I can remember getting on those.
Since TP and paper towels vary so much in size, its a good idea to check out the sheets per roll to make sure you are getting a good deal. You could pay $.25/roll, but if the roll only has 200 sheets, you will be changing it out a lot more frequently than something that has 360 sheets.

I agreed to get cards to give to my students who are graduating on Friday, and I figured the I could use the deal on cards at CVS. My CVS has American Greetings, and there were 2 coupons avail both for $2 (one CVS and one MQ), and then the $3 EBs wyb 3 cards. Well, it seems that even though one of the $2 coupons is a CVS coupon, it is actually an MQ (it is only redeemable at CVS, though) so they would only let me use 1 Q. And my CVS only had cards from $2.99 and up (most places are advertising $0.99 and up). So I wound up paying $4 for 3 cards instead of having a $2.50 MM like I thought. It is better than buying them without Qs, and a better deal than I would get at Hallmark, but I think I will look for $0.99 cards at the grocery store or hit up the dollar store for the rest...I could go to one of the 7 other CVSs in town and see if they have $0.99 cards, which would be a MM even with the 1 Q, but I'm not sure it is worth it.

IMHO, it is not worth the time and the cost of gas to drive around in hopes of finding a $.99 card; and you are really smart to stop and think about that. I believe this is the exact type of scenario that costs you more time and money than it is worth, similar to what constanz was talking about in her previous post. Cards at my dollar store are always $.50, so that's my go-to place for greeting cards. Even though the selection is not as great as what you'd find at CVS or WAGs, I always seem to be able to find something that I really like.

You could pay $.25/roll, but if the roll only has 200 sheets, you will be changing it out a lot more frequently than something that has 360 sheets. In the past, many of us have used sq. ft. per package to determine whether or not a package of TP is a good price. I have a decent stockpile of TP so the prices might be on the low side in the example, but you can set any price point you want based on your price book. THE TOILET PAPER PRINCIPLE Look at the front bottom of the toilet paper package to determine the total square feet. Now insert a decimal point in this number two places to the left. If the cost of the package minus coupons is less than or equal to this figure, it's a decent deal -- basically $0.01 or less per square foot! Example: TP #1 = 400 sq. ft.; price = $6.00; stock-up price $4, so not a fabulous deal.... TP #2 = 650 sq. ft.; price = $5.00; stock-up price $6.50, so definitely a bargain!

I guess this strategic couponing came at the right time for me. I always used q's but never quite in the ways outlined here. When I first started, DH's business was in the tank so I was the sole bread winner. With back to back to back kids going to college, I had to look for serious ways to save money. Other than our mortgage, there was no debt so that's never been a problem here. There was definitely a learning curve so I probably spent more time back then figuring things out. That's why the posting of deals on here has been so helpful--you never know who might benefit from it even if they don't post.
Still, I wanted to see if all the work was worth it so I kept track. That was back in the good old days, before EC, so I was very pleased with the savings. If I remember correctly, after all was said and done, with rebates etc., I actually made a couple hundred dollars that year. I try to not buy things we won't use unless it's a complete money maker--the Nasal Ease deal is a good example (although DH will probably use the 4 I bought). I then use the EB's, UPs or RR's to buy things we do use. I'm definitely not as good at "rolling" the rewards since I'm always trying to get better deals on stuff we need. All the kids are still in school--post grad or undergrad--so I still buy for them. They love shopping in Murphy Mart so I will probably continue to stock it. I don't have a huge stockpile simply because I don't get many inserts. The best insert paper here is $3 so I rely on my one subscription and whatever I can get from family and you guys here. This board is a godsend.
Now, I don't spend too much time hounding. I wasn't in WAGS for a long time until the Nasal Ease deal. CVS hasn't had a lot I like and RA has totally dried up for me. But I know another deal will come around so I'll be patient.
I will say that the savings I've achieved on products such as shampoo, conditioner, gel, deodorant, mouthwash, Dove/Olay soap, razors, vitamins, etc. has allowed me to spend more $ on organic produce & milk. I think JMO influenced me on that. We've always eaten tons of veggies/fruit--not too much on the processed stuff except for cereals, saltines and such. Being a lifetime Weight Watchers member since 1979 has definitely influenced how we eat (even if the kids don't realize it!).
Constanz22: I hope you will stick around as I've enjoyed your posts. I can see how being single would make buying so much not such a great idea. I'm happy you've been able to share and/or sell your excess. It's really all about balance in one's life. It looks like you have had an "aha" moment and it must be so satisfying to you.

Personally, I am moving away from stockpiling. I loved "the game" and the thrill of the chase, but, honestly, being a one person household, I went WAY overboard in the past four years. When I really started paying attention to how long it takes me to use ONE bottle of body wash, ONE tube of toothpaste, ONE stick of deodorant, ONE bottle of shampoo, etc., most of these products, it takes me 3-4 months, so, I may use 2 or 3 a year. I'm starting to feel like I probably wasted ALOT of money chasing the deals, paying tax and OOP, no matter how little, in an effort to keep rolling rewards, plus gas, plus time chasing deals, as well as accumulating a ton of products that I don't use or need or that will take me 10 years to use up. I have thrown out more unopened food than I want to admit. Even sharing with friends and family, and donating and yard saling excess, I still have entirely too much. I am cashing in my rewards everywhere and focusing on using up what I have. I've always been a bargain hunter and smart shopper, and will continue to be. I get ONE newspaper, and will occasionally buy one. I've had no need for a large number of inserts anymore. For me, personally, I feel the winds of change and it's time to re-focus and do things a little differently. And, who knows, maybe in a couple years, all of the deals, great coupons and freebies will be back again. For now, I plan to just live off what I have, sell most of the excess at my yard sale this summer and keep a maximum of 3-4 of each item on hand. Constanz, as a single person I did the same. I was glad to have so much of what I needed and so much that I could share with my family, friends, and charity, and I was also overwhelmed with all the time spent and storage issues and having to move it all when I moved in with DH. Now as a two-person household and with the deals being less frequent, I wish I still had some of that stuff. I don't know what it is about men but mine uses way more of everything than I do so we go through things faster. He's gone through about 3 soap refills in the time it's taken me to go through half of one (yes, I do wash my hands!) I guess it's all a game that comes and goes. Now I'm looking for different products. Btw, Suzi, I also gained weight eating the free bakery products and pre-made noodle packets. Now I'm using Earthbound Farms coupons on salad and blueberries. I've cut way back on the chase but now that I know that you don't have to pay full price for things, I can't go back to that. Gotta keep working on the deals! But everyone has to do what's best for them. I took off most of last year when I was too busy and my stockpile got me through it. I usually take summers off too but we'll see what happens this year. The freezer and fridge were bursting last week, now it's a little more under control. I could definitely use more HBA stuff.

I understand, Constanz. I'm new to it, and I love to shop, plus for me there is the added bonus of making spreadsheets and reading blogs (two things I will gladly spend tons of time on), and it seems like all my time and effort is worth it because I'm enjoying it. But in the end, DBF and I don't consume much, so a stockpile of a year's worth of things isn't large and won't take long to accumulate, and I can see myself just continuing regardless because I like it. If it got to the point where I was throwing things away because I'd gotten more than we could use before they expired, or there was any added stress from doing it vs. not, then I would need to take a step back because that's not the goal. Obviously I don't have as much experience as you all, but with how much I like it so far I can see how it could become problematic. It isn't anyone's fault, and it is good you recognized the issue and the necessary response. moutonrouge, if you find that you have more than you need and won't be able to use it, please think about donating it to a food pantry or women's shelter. A lot of us have had to cut back on donating because we don't have as many extras so if you have extra, please do!

Dancinmama, I was in your Nob Hill store on Saturday! I was visiting my aunt for a day and a half and we took a lovely trip over to the beach with the big smoke stacks in ML (I know, oxymoron.) We stopped at some farm stands nearby and got some amazing artichokes (12/$1!!!) in the artichoke capital. On the way back I dozed off in the back of the car and woke up in the NH parking lot! They wanted to stop to buy a container of ice cream. I grabbed some sourdough bread, because you just can't get bread like that in any other part of the country.
I brought home so much food and was trying so hard to keep it cool. When I got home the temperature had dropped almost 40 degrees from there to here!
Freshly picked from the fields across the street and in the area: Artichokes 12/$1 Asparagus 2/$2 Large California avocados 3/$1 Small Hass avocados 7/$1 Raw almonds $3.99/lb. (same as rock bottom price at Sprouts, not sure if that's a great price) Brussel sprouts (best looking I've ever seen) $2/big bag Broccoli $0.49/big bunch Strawberries < 3 baskets/$5 (we bought six and split them so it was less but I didn't see the price) Walnuts in the shell, half a plastic grocery bag, free from my aunt's tree Valencia oranges, ~4 lb., free from my aunt's tree Navel oranges, ~4 lb., free from my aunt's neighbor's tree Dried Greek oregano, free from my aunt's plants

I will say that the savings I've achieved on products such as shampoo, conditioner, gel, deodorant, mouthwash, Dove/Olay soap, razors, vitamins, etc. has allowed me to spend more $ on organic produce & milk. Great post, murphath. I think the key words in your post are "strategic couponing". Spending the time, gas, and any money in OOP to collect "rewards" when you don't have a plan as to how you will use them effectively can defeat the whole purpose of why we do what we do. To get a reward and then be forced to use it on overpriced stuff (even though you may need that stuff) may yield no better results than just waiting for the overpriced stuff to go on sale. The difference is that with using the reward you might have made two trips to get the overpriced stuff, where just buying the overpriced stuff on sale, only takes one so in essence you come out behind. It is soooo important to have some kind of plan or "strategy" for why you are doing a particular deal. What are you getting from it? Do you need the product? If you don't, is the "profit" enough to justify the trip to get it? Obviously, paying sales tax alone to get a $5 reward is a no-brainer, but those deals these days are few and far between. Since I already have decent stockpiles of a lot of the RR products that we would use, the profit margin has to be pretty high to suck me in to doing a deal. I did do the NasalEase deal because I felt the profit was worth the effort and I could use the rewards on rain checks (that I have been holding for this exact purpose). If the profit had been only a buck or maybe even two, I would have taken a pass. You also have to have a strategy as to when to roll your rewards and when to get out. There is no sense rolling week after week after week into deals where you do not need or want the products. In the meantime you're using time, gas, and OOP just to roll which in the end, may not serve any valuable purpose. It is no longer like the old days when you could almost always roll into another useful toiletry item at a profit. Once you "get out" (are holding no rewards), be strategic about when you get back in. Look for a pretty big MM or an item that is free after reward that you really need. Couponers who "play the game", for the sake of the game only instead of being strategic in how they use coupons will lose.

That was the hottest day we've had so far here this year. Glad you got a lot of good produce to take down south with you.

I have a question for those of you more experienced with rebates....I did the Neosporin deal a couple of weeks back. They were offering a rebate up to $14.99 I think. I bought it from wags for 12.99 but had found a $5 coupon so I expected it to be a money maker. However I just got my rebate and it was for 7.99 so they actually looked and saw the coupon and deducted it. This was the only item on the receipt. Is this common? Had I had more items do you think they would have noticed the coupon? Or do you suppose they were looking because they knew the coupon was out there?
Ok so I just checked with hubby who also got a rebate check (at his job) and he got the full $12.99 but there were multiple items on his receipt not just the neosporin and coupon. Oh well....lesson learned I guess.

RE: WAGS
I always thought that if you earned a RR on something that you couldn't use that RR to buy the item again and get another RR. Did this transaction last night and it indeed did generate an RR for the U Sleek tampons:
U Sleek Tmpn S/P 18 $3.99 Kettle s/salt 8.5z $2.29 Kettle s/salt 8.5z $1.71 (Wags is so stupid how they show the price) 1@ 1/2/29 - 2/4.00 Candy $0.39 filler - $3 RR (from previous U Sleek purchase) - 2( $1) MC Kettle chips SubTotal $2.38 tax $0.35 Total $2.73
Paid and it generated another $3 RR from the U Sleek....why?

Dancin':
Thanks for the explanation. I was certain that this scenario shouldn't be allowed.

Once in a great while this will happen. It is usually a glitch in the system. When they realize that it is happening, they usually fix it. If the computer programming is the same for the registers at CVS and RA, wags I think I know. A freind who is a mgr at CVS said that sometimes ECBs and CRTs will have specific writing on them to only be used for a specific product or to not generate another RR like above. But the coding for the bar code is actually a generic code for blank cents or dollars off. So instead of enforcing the right rules it just takes that amount off and the register will not beep or anything and in this case still give the RR. It actually annoyed me once when I forgot a candy bar that had a CRT for a free one. The CRT coupon was in my stack and the woman ran it through and it went even though I had forgotten the candy bar. I saw it and said wait I forgot my candy bar. She said it doesn't actually matter because the coupon was coded as a generic coupon and the register would just take it off the bottom no matter what. I was confused since I can have a man coupon for the exact product no question and the stupid register beeps like mad but when I clearly didn't have it it just took the money off no problem.

Can't remember, but I think the cashier entered the RR by hand? If she did, that might explain it?

There were reports yesterday on SlickDeals that Kotex has been rolling. Rolling means when you can use one RR for an item and it generates the same RR. Personally, I never risk the chance, because the rolling aspect can be turned off at anytime. I'm glad it worked out for you.

twinsandmore: I have adopted the habit of blacking out unnecessary info on my receipts. The rebate processors don't need to know the last four digits of my CC, the other items I purchased in that shopping trip, etc. The rebates almost always say to circle the item and price, not the final total of the receipt or other coupons used. I have done this with the last 10 rebates I submitted and haven't had a problem yet. I do keep copies of the unaltered receipt and rebate form submission to help IF there is ever a problem I should have to call about.

Hi everyone! I'm new to couponing, and have been trying to make some sense of it for awhile. I think I'm ready to give it a try, but might need a little coaching I live in the DC area, and grocery prices here are crazy. The closest grocery stores are Safeway and Whole Foods, both of which are crazy expensive. I feel like I can't walk into Whole Foods without spending at least $30 on bread and a bottle of wine, and Safeway is running about $80-100 a week on groceries for 2. I have a CVS near my office and both Rite Aid and Walgreens not far. There are a lot of choices for shopping, but getting there can sometimes be an issue. We tend to buy the same things every week/month, so anything I can do to save money on those things would be huge! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

pinkbow: WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME to the Grocery Challenge from me - dancinmama!!
We're very happy to have you join our little group.
Since you tend to buy the same items regularly, do you know the rock bottom prices on those items (the lowest sale price)? If not, the first thing you will want to do is put together a price book so that you know when the items that you buy are on sale at their cheapest price. When that happens, instead of buying the (1) that you need this week, you buy several at the really cheap price for use later (taking expiration into consideration, of course).
Do you already get the Sunday paper for the coupons? Do you know people (family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers) who might be willing to pass their Sunday coupons on to you?
Do you check a blog on-line for the best coupon deals?
The gals here are extremely friendly and will bend over backward to help you, so ask as many questions as you need to and I'm sure someone will help you out.

Welcome, pinkbow! ;D Stick with the ladies here and you'll be saving soon! Like dancin' said...everyone here is EXTREMELY friendly will absolutely be happy to help! Don't hesitate to ask any questions that come up:) NAG (not about groceries) So, have you all heard about houseparty.com? It's where you apply to "host" a party, featuring a specific product. I've won it for Capri Sun, DiGiornio Pizza, Chef Boyarded and Philadelphia Cooking Cream. You receive coupons for free product, as well as coupons to hand out to your guests. It's really kind of fun:) You don't always get selected for the ones you want, but sometimes, it just works out. I applied to host a Keurig Vue House Party..................AND WON!!!!! I won a BRAND NEW KEURIG VUE, as well as 6 boxes of the Keurig Vue cups. I'm just stunned that I won it!! So, I was looking to see where else besides Bed Bath and Beyond that I could get the Vue cups and Kohl's is starting to carry them. So, I went online and ordered 2 boxes. I had a code for 20% off, plus $10 Kohl's Cash (that I didn't know what to do with) and a coupon code for free shipping. So, for 2 boxes of coffee, 16 cups per box), I paid just over $12.00. Considering the Vue cups are between $9.99 and $13.99 each, I think I did ok ;D It's sill more expensive than using the regular coffee maker, but for those times when my hubby is out of town or I want a cup of hot tea or we're in a hurry and need a quick cup to go, it's perfect. Check out the Keurig Vue! It really IS a neat machine! You can brew different sizes, and if you want your coffee stronger, you can brew it that way. If you want your hot drink hotter than usual, you can set that up, too. I really like it!! We're having a family gathering to celebrate the "spring" birthdays....two of them are my son and I! ;D OH! And on top of THAT.... my mom and dad are GIVING us their dishwasher that's less than 3 years old! I just have to pay to have someone come install it. One of my co-workers has a son that is a licensed plumber and he'll come do it for $100 plus any parts he needs, and $20 to haul away the old one. So, a new dishwasher for $120? I'll take it!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Like the rest of you, the deals here in St. Louis have been pretty blah. Nothing to make me want to jump and down for joy! Although, I have splurged and will probably do so again today...the orchard near my church has their strawberries in! They've been in the country store now for about 3 weeks. They said this is the first time in their history that strawberries have been available in the middle of April. My splurge was a flat (6 quarts) of FRESH strawberries for $24.99.

missourimommy- That's awesome! I applied for the keurig vue party too, but didn't get in. I've only applied for a few and have gotten in 2, the Coffeemate one where I got a Dolce Gusto coffee machine and LOTS of free Coffeemate, and the keurig Barista, but that was just lots of yummy coffee. Congrats! I saw part of the infomercial in the Vue. It does look like a cool machine!
Pinkbow- Welcome! Your screen name sounds familiar. Have you been with us before?

Dancin: You probably know this already, but these chips are on sale at Raley's (Nob Hill for you) for $2/bag this week. We love chips and salsa, too! But I use these in my taco casserole as well. My q was $1/2.
