I remember when I first started following the grocery challenge and I was so intimidated by the large # of pages, then the monthly format used to have 15, 20, 25+ pages by now. And here we are with one week left in the month and we're at 11 pages. Sadly, there are so few deals to discuss. It makes me sad. I bought one paper today, just so my SO could read it. Not even for the coupons because there isn't $2.50 worth of coupons that I'll use out of the insert. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy shampoo/conditioner without a stock up price. We're down to using little sample packets of shampoo at my house. Yes, those were the good times and we knew it. Thank goodness I kept on buying when things were free. I do have to say that I gained a lot of weight during the good times. Why? I actually was eating too much of the processed foods that were FREE. I did not have much control over my eating habits back then. Now I am into fresh foods and very little meats, definitely no red meat. I am trying to like fish, though it is not a favorite. As far as shampoo, I have a full banana box, plus about 30 more bottles of it in the house. This should last the two of us (although adult DD visits and takes whatever she wants for her place) about 3 years. I have enough deodorant to last about 2 years. contact lens solution: about 2 years. Cleaning supplies? About 3 years...toothpaste? about 2-3 years.....bath wash 5 years (I hope it lasts, LOL) fingernail polish 5 years.....make up 5 years, if it lasts...face wash 2 years.....Finish dishwasher agent 4 years....brillo pads 5 years.... I could go on and on. My house is beginning to look crowded with the non-perishables. I don't give it away anymore because the deals are just not there. I like free, or close to it. Drat! That couponing show was the "death" of couponing as we used to have it. Now the deals are not as frequent. I am so glad that I bought stuff that I really didn't need at the time for FREE. Now I am just living off of what I have, and it is still working out well.
We still get deals every now and then...about a year ago Ralphs had free food zip lock bags. I must have bought 40 boxes. My DH thought that I was truly overboard. Guess what?? I haven't seen a deal like that since. Now, my stockpile for the zip lock bags is dwindling because there are far less bags in each box and my DD keeps taking them from my "stash," LOL. So if you guys do get a decent deal, even if it isn't completely free, please post. This may "tide us over" until a few great deals come our way. Not everyone is a "hoarder" like me. This comes from my very poor upbringing as a child. We just didn't have much. My DD, who is a nurse, lovingly refers to my hoarding tendencies as a level 2 out of 10 maximum. I am trying to get better, but I still like the FREE items. The main thing for me is when CVS marks something down to 75%.I look for coupons for that item and it brings the price down to nothing. I recently got about 20 bars of Essence of Beauty soap this way. My "addiction" to coupons and going to the stores was broken about a year ago. I was told that I had to lose weight and exercise more. I now spend about 1 1/2-2 hours a day at the gym 6 days a week, sometimes longer if I have eaten too much the day before.

CVS: I have a $15.00 CRT on any Physician's Formula. Do I have to buy $15.00 or more, adjust it down or get overage? Next week they're offering a $7.00 ECB when you buy any PF cosmetics. I don't think I've ever had a CRT that large. For whatever reason, my CVS only paid $12.00 maximum. It was still very good, because I had a few $3.00 off coupons. I did not point it out to them, because I didn't want to deal with a manager. I was happy with the $12.00. Just make sure that you keep close tabs on the expiration date if you wait for next week's deal. FREE Makeup!

Thank goodness I kept on buying when things were free. From the time the drug chains started offering rewards, I kept remembering the year 2003 when my Safeway stopped offering doubled coupons. You simply looked for rock bottom prices and used your coupons to stockpile. That was the best that could be done. I knew in my gut that what we were experiencing over the last few years could not go on forever, so when I saw freebies on non-perishables, even on products that I seemingly had in abundance, I added to my stockpiles. I donated a lot to the food pantry, but I stored a lot for our own use. The fact that it isn't as good as it used to be, should not stop you gals from being the most efficient shoppers that you can be. The principle of looking for rock bottom prices and stockpiling products that you use regularly still applies - and if you have multiple coupons for the item, all the better. So if you guys do get a decent deal, even if it isn't completely free, please post. This may "tide us over" until a few great deals come our way. In these "slow" times, focus your efforts on finding resources where you can get 4-6 sets of inserts a week for free. If we ALL do this, we'll still be able to help each other win the grocery game by sharing info on deals and sharing our coupons.

Heck, we were lucky if the TP lasted the month. Not so much because we were poor, but because my mom was a terrible steward of money. I bought 2 cases of TP and 2 cases of papertowels a while back. It wasn't even close to free but I have an unreasonable fear of not having toilet paper. Now, when you look at the trunk of the car full of this stuff, you think it's going to last until the next sale. However, it seems to go faster than I expect it to, and then I'm sitting, like I am now, trying to piece together the best shampoo deals - deals that aren't even fantastic.

I don't think I've ever had a CRT that large. I think I read on a blog that this is for a new skincare line, not cosmetics, although suzi says she used it on cosmetics, so YMMV. I think they said the skincare products start around 19.99, which makes sense with such a high value CRT.

I did find one halfway decent deal at CVS that I'll take the drive over for. (I'm sure they'll be out of product by the time I get off work at 5pm, but since I can get a raincheck I'll do it)
Biore pore strips $6.00 each (spend $15 get $5 eb) Use (3) BOGOF coupons (buy strips, get cleanser)
Basicall spend $16 OOP get a $5 RR and leave with 3 pore stips and 3 cleansers.

There are some decent deals out there but like Dancinmama says, you have to be patient. I was out of WAGS for a long time until last weekend with the NasalEase deal. My DH can use the spray and I was able to find 4/$5 q's. With tax, I still "made" $4.25 in RR off each one. So I parlayed that into the 2 Dr. Scholls, 1lb almonds, 3 pencils, 2 Purex laundry detergent and 2 12 roll TP's. I still have one $9 RR left. My total OOP for everything so far has been @ $22. The $ value if I just bought the above with regular coupons would have been $32 + tax so I'm ahead $10+ dollars--more when you consider the last $9 RR.
I meant to post my Friday buy at CVS. I had some EB's expiring so I bought: 2 ACT Sensitive: $7.98 1 Colgate Total: $2.99 Minus: 2/$2 q's from last Sunday's insert $1 Colgate q $4.00 EB Paid $1.56 and rec'd $4 EB's back. We needed the mouthwash as we only have 1 in Murphy Mart! Yikes!

The big difference is that we are starting to pay a bit in OOP for the products that we need and will use. Shopping sales and coupons will continue to yield big savings.

They are eyeliners I tried a few years ago and now it's my choice. They are half as much as what I used to pay years ago. P8nt: Your words are my sentiments exactly. My mother too wasn't a good steward. My worst memory was going to the neighbors late at night to borrow a bar of soap. I was totally humiliated and that is one of the reasons I stockpile. The only difference is I don't spend hardly any money for these things. Once you have a stockpile, you can be patient for the next best deal. CVS: DH's card had no ECB's. I used it for 3 American Greeting cards minus $2.00 IPQ. I got $3.00 ECB and $1.00 green tag buck. I rolled it on an 8 pk. paper towels for $3.99. The $7.00 ECB I got from PF was a MM and I'll hold that until I see a decent deal. Rite Aid: I got $2.00 in UPs today for buying 2 Veet using 2 IPQ and 2 in ad Q's, which was a MM. I'll use them when I get eggs next week.

Personally, I am moving away from stockpiling. I loved "the game" and the thrill of the chase, but, honestly, being a one person household, I went WAY overboard in the past four years. When I really started paying attention to how long it takes me to use ONE bottle of body wash, ONE tube of toothpaste, ONE stick of deodorant, ONE bottle of shampoo, etc., most of these products, it takes me 3-4 months, so, I may use 2 or 3 a year. I'm starting to feel like I probably wasted ALOT of money chasing the deals, paying tax and OOP, no matter how little, in an effort to keep rolling rewards, plus gas, plus time chasing deals, as well as accumulating a ton of products that I don't use or need or that will take me 10 years to use up. I have thrown out more unopened food than I want to admit. Even sharing with friends and family, and donating and yard saling excess, I still have entirely too much. I am cashing in my rewards everywhere and focusing on using up what I have. I've always been a bargain hunter and smart shopper, and will continue to be. I get ONE newspaper, and will occasionally buy one. I've had no need for a large number of inserts anymore. For me, personally, I feel the winds of change and it's time to re-focus and do things a little differently. And, who knows, maybe in a couple years, all of the deals, great coupons and freebies will be back again. For now, I plan to just live off what I have, sell most of the excess at my yard sale this summer and keep a maximum of 3-4 of each item on hand.

I came upon a pretty good zyrtec deal at CVS today. I got a $10/2 CRT for 25-30 ct, and the $7 MCs are expiring today. I was able to pick up 2 bottles for $3 each, but the deal is only good TODAY.

Perhaps we got too caught up in posting the deals and did not spend enough time urging people to evaluate what they were doing, although I did try to post about it regularly. Unfortunately, we can never know what is actually going through someones head when they are doing this. Everyone has to figure out for themselves the TRUE reason why they are doing each individual deal. The "thrill of the chase" is always a bad reason to stockpile. Yes, it's thrilling to get a good deal, but saving money should ALWAYS be the ultimate goal. I remember dhunny posted that she saw getting the deals as a competition of sorts. That makes it a "keep up with the Joneses" type of proposition - one that will never have positive results. I was a heavy WAGs shopper when I could get everything I purchased for $0 OOP because of the ESR program. Once they discontinued that, I knew that shopping at WAGs would actually cost me money. I stopped shopping there on a weekly basis and began just cherry-picking the very best deals and letting the rest of them go. Same thing at CVS. The first couple of years after my Longs converted, my CRTs and EBs would absorb any sales tax that I had to pay, so again, I was shopping for very close to $0 in OOP. The MMs were true MMs if I didn't have to pay OOP for sales tax. About a year ago, that came to an end and so did doing many of the deals that I once did. Again, I began to focus on cherry picking the very best deals and using the rewards to purchase other items that we truly needed and would use. Again, I personally feel badly that you feel that you wasted your time and money doing this. Is there anything that we as a community could have done to have prevented it?

Thanks p8nt! Glad to see you here!!
This week I'm just going to do a couple deals. My oven is broken, and that put a wrench in our cooking plans last week so we have a lot of food still from our shopping trip on Tuesday. Since we probably will only go to the store once and I'm going to try and make 2 trips to CVS on campus over lunch, this is my plan:
CVS Tampax Radiant: $3.99 -$2MQ from another pack, $1.99 x2 Kotex U: $3.00 -$1IPQ , $2.99 Dove Deodorant: $3.49 -$1IPQ, $2.49 x3 Dove Men+Care Soap: 6.97 -$1IPQ, $5.97 Total OOP $20.40, get back $9EBs
I wouldn't do the Dove deal, but I'm out of deodorant and DBF is out of soap. It is cheaper to do that deal (spend $15 get $5EBs) with shampoo or body wash.
Meijer Jell-O Pudding 6 packs: $2.50 -$2IPQ, $0.50 x2 Jell-O Pudding 6 packs: $2.50 -$0.55MQ, $1.95 Total OOP $2.95, get $2 oyno wyb 3 Jell-O Pudding 6 packs
I would buy more of those, but a girl can only eat so much Jell-O pudding and the $2Q is limited to 2 flavors I'm not sure I will like (S'more and Strawberry Sundae). You can get those on KraftFirstTaste.com, if anyone is interested, plus they have other ones for Philly Cream Cheese. HTH

Hi all! I hope everyone is having a good weekend. I don't have any knowledge of how things used to be as I only started the GC game about 2 years ago. I also seem to live in backwards land because I have been seeing some pretty good deals at my local grocery store. I have actually made money on some food and household items in the past year. Thanks to eveyrone who helped me! This board has been a God send for me.
I haven't been posting many deals because I always feel like no one really cares what my shoprite has going. But I will try more because there may be someone reading even if they just lurk who sees something they can use. So in the spirit of that today I did.
Staples 1 4gb flash drive $7.99 FREE after rewards. ;D
Shoprite Renyolds wrap foil 75 sq foot box $1.99-$1.50 Mc =0.49
Acme coke 8 pack mini cans $2.99 B2G1 free $2.99 each. The cat machine has been spitting out $1 MCs on it so I got 3 for $5.98-(2)1 MCs=$3.98 for 3-8 packs of coke. Split chicken breast 0.99 cents a lb with in ad coupon.

HOUND ALERT!!! I am looking for the 0.55 cent MC on edge or skintimate shave gel from today's 4/21 SS. I am looking to do the CVS spend 25 get $10 in ECBs. My Dd is a teenager and goes through an incredible amount of it. After the coupons and ECBs it comes to under a $1 a can which is a pretty good deal for me. Thanks for anyone who can help!!!

I used to go in the stores at least 3 times a week. No more. I think I visit once a week, and only to CVS right now. If I go on vacation, oh well. The fact remains that I still like and need free non-perishables. As far as newspapers or buying coupons: I used to buy 4-6 newspapers every weekend, or beg the neighbors for their freebie coupons. Now I don't ask them for their coupons as much, and I don't buy any newspapers at all. Our newspapers price went up to $2.00 a copy. The freebie newspapers coupons just aren't as good, but who cares? It is better than nothing, and costs nothing.

If you got the Finesse coupons in today's paper you can get it for $.99 at Wags. I didn't get in my paper. Jeep, Thank you for your post. 99 cents is a really good deal for Finesse if you need the shampoo. This is exactly what I am talking about. It is slow with the FREE deals, so now we post the cheap deals. Some people need shampoo and we need to know where to get it, and for how much. Love it!

Yes, I feel a little bad too, but buying stuff is a personal decision. There are some of us that are willing to pay the tax, while others won't. That is O.K.
Look at the time I used to spend at the stores. It was well worth it to me, because we needed the stuff. Now that the kids are grown and out of the house for good, I just don't need as much. Exercising became more of a priority.
Our lives change. Constanz has made a decision to change things for the better for her. I think that this is a great idea.

Since we probably will only go to the store once and I'm going to try and make 2 trips to CVS on campus over lunch, this is my plan: CVSTampax Radiant: $3.99 -$2MQ from another pack, $1.99 x2 Kotex U: $3.00 -$1IPQ , $2.99 Dove Deodorant: $3.49 -$1IPQ, $2.49 x3 Dove Men+Care Soap: 6.97 -$1IPQ, $5.97 Total OOP $20.40, get back $9EBs I wouldn't do the Dove deal, but I'm out of deodorant and DBF is out of soap. It is cheaper to do that deal (spend $15 get $5EBs) with shampoo or body wash. MeijerJell-O Pudding 6 packs: $2.50 -$2IPQ, $0.50 x2 Jell-O Pudding 6 packs: $2.50 -$0.55MQ, $1.95 Total OOP $2.95, get $2 oyno wyb 3 Jell-O Pudding 6 packs I would buy more of those, but a girl can only eat so much Jell-O pudding and the $2Q is limited to 2 flavors I'm not sure I will like (S'more and Strawberry Sundae). You can get those on KraftFirstTaste.com, if anyone is interested, plus they have other ones for Philly Cream Cheese. HTH Thank you!!! Good deals!

Yikes! Excellent deal, Murpath.

This board has been a God send for me. I haven't been posting many deals because I always feel like no one really cares what my shoprite has going. But I will try more because there may be someone reading even if they just lurk who sees something they can use. So in the spirit of that today I did. Staples 1 4gb flash drive $7.99 FREE after rewards. ;D Shoprite Renyolds wrap foil 75 sq foot box $1.99-$1.50 Mc =0.49 Acme coke 8 pack mini cans $2.99 B2G1 free $2.99 each. The cat machine has been spitting out $1 MCs on it so I got 3 for $5.98-(2)1 MCs=$3.98 for 3-8 packs of coke. Split chicken breast 0.99 cents a lb with in ad coupon. Beachbum, I am so glad that you like this board. I still do. There is just something about the people here. We all are frugal, and don't mind cutting and saving coupons to get free or close to free stuff. I like your post, because you don't necessarily have to buy stuff for free to post here. 99 cents a pound for split chicken breasts is a great price. Ditto for the sodas. My family members never will understand it, but you all do.

I can spare some...I dont know if you knew, but there was another set of .55 MQ in a insert a few weeks ago for both of those, in case you were unaware...however, i have some you have...i have both

Beachbum, I love your Shoprite deals! Since one was built nearby, I think I've done most of my gshopping there - with help from you and frugalsuz - these are cool deals. And on the free/freap vs just much less - from the time I first started this, my goal was always to spend much less. I've been amazed by how much less - in the order of 35% to 40% of what I used to spend, although I did always use coupons to some extent and followed sales.

Please, I don't want anyone to feel bad. It's definitely my issue. I have always been a bit of a "shopaholic" and hounding definitely filled that need. I am a bit obsessive and also have some hoarding tendencies, so, this just kind of spiraled a little out of control for me personally. I am not saying it is not beneficial and I still plan on doing it on a much, much smaller scale. I think the point I was trying to make, FOR ME, is if I only go through 2-3 of something a year (body wash, deodorant, shampoo, etc) that chasing deals and paying tax (8%) and all those $1-3 OOP to try to keep rolling rewards, and getting 20 shampoo, body wash or whatever over the course of the year probably cost me as much, if not more than if I just bought the 2-3 I needed, on sale, with a coupon. I don't know if I am explaining myself very well. I'm just trying to pare down and simplify many areas of my life right now and this is definitely one of them.

I understand, Constanz. I'm new to it, and I love to shop, plus for me there is the added bonus of making spreadsheets and reading blogs (two things I will gladly spend tons of time on), and it seems like all my time and effort is worth it because I'm enjoying it. But in the end, DBF and I don't consume much, so a stockpile of a year's worth of things isn't large and won't take long to accumulate, and I can see myself just continuing regardless because I like it. If it got to the point where I was throwing things away because I'd gotten more than we could use before they expired, or there was any added stress from doing it vs. not, then I would need to take a step back because that's not the goal. Obviously I don't have as much experience as you all, but with how much I like it so far I can see how it could become problematic. It isn't anyone's fault, and it is good you recognized the issue and the necessary response.

SuziQI too am sad to see my Ziploc stash getting smaller & smaller...seemed like it would always be there! DancinMamaGood point about us sharing q's. At least we can help each other that way! P8ntDo you have RA? I can't remember if you do or not - sorry. I will post my RA deals this week and free shampoo is one of them. ConstanzI totally get it. You don't want couponing to rule your life, rather, you want it to be something that supports your life. And, I too had that problem with food. Most of the food that is free we wouldn't eat and it was too much effort to get rid of it. Now, I stick with only things we will eat. (Unless I am collecting for a specific food drive.) BeachbumThanks for the Staples deal! I will have to hop on that! ----- Ok, now onto my deals today. Slim, yes, but still worthwhile: WagsI-cool $10 with $10 RR and $2 IP (IP NLA) Psoriasin $5 with $5 RR U by Kotex Tampons $3.99 with $3 RR & $1 MQ ($1 IP also available on their website) RASamy Fat Shampoo Stylers or Hair Color $8.99 (or $7.19 with gold) $2 IP (I have it in PDF, but I can't see the attachment button?) $2 VV $5 UP Free or MM if you have a silver/gold discount Veet Price vary I bought the $6.99 cream hair remover ($5.59 with gold) $2 IP (on Veet FB & Veet's website) $2 in-ad q $1 UP For my purchase it was .59. But if you like the cheapie item (the lip wax) it will be FREE or MM. SafewayDole Pineapple 8 oz .99 BOGO Less .50/2 mq's found in Feb and March All You and RP 1/29/12 and SS 3/25/12 Less .50 Doubler = FREE Sorry, I know you gals in Cali don't have doublers. My 4th stop of the day was at Origins where I traded in an empty facial cleanser bottle for a tube of one of their moisturizers. Hoping it works - goes along well with my new natural food regiment. Don't know if it will work or not because it has chamomile and I have a chamomile allergy!
