Not sure if my new shoes are going to be good for me or not. I don't know if my ankles are sore because of the shoes or the fact we did trail running today and the ground was rocky? I am going to go with the trail run. When I did my first trail run last week, my ankles and basically all leg bones hurt for a week!

Good for you Archie. I recommend Hal Higdon's training plans - he is realistic. Once you hit 10/11 miles in training, you can easily finish a half. I just signed up for the Disney World full marathon in January. I am out of my mind, but I am so excited! I am planning on two local half marathons in October before the full in January. I have done two 5ks, a 7k, a 10k, and 15k races as well as train 20-25 miles a week. I am doing Hal Higdon Novice 2 plan starting next month for my marathon training. Of course, I am also nursing some sort of hamstring injury, still running, but not as many miles a week. Just got a Garmine Forerunner 110 GPS watch. Love it! Now I know exactly how far I have gone, what my pace is, what my heart rate is while running!

I used Hal's training for the last 1/2 I did, although I didn't stick to it very well. This time I took Hal's 1/2 marathon and 5k training schedules and combined them and put them into my own calendar to make my schedule. Hopefully I can stick to it.
one week down and I start well, but I didn't stick to all of my running days. I didn't realize how out of shape I am. My 3 mile runs leave me winded and sore and my feet hurt. It is bad. But I did manage to get through a 5 mile run yesterday. Hopefully it will get better quickly.

Good job Archie. I found my gps watch to be a lifesaver - I realized I was running all my training runs at too fast a pace and that is why I struggled a lot. Now I pay attention to my pace (marathon pace + 60/90 seconds) and while I feel kind of like a turtle, I feel great at the end!

I use a GPS watch, too, which I love. When I did my 5 mile run yesterday I was struggling with going to fast during the first mile. I was trying to slow down, but I just couldn't find the right pace. That kind of killed me for the rest of the run.

I still am only running at 2 minute intervals. I can't seem to get past 2 minutes.
I will be going to the gym in about...3 hours. I will try to push myself to run at 3 minute intervals today.

Ugh... my friggen back. I didn't realize how out of shape I was. I did a 3 mile run on Saturday morning and did something to my back. I can barely walk. I have heat on it now. I hope it heals quickly or I am definitely going to miss the 1/2.

My first pair of running shoes were New Balance. My second pair were Asics Nimbus Gel 13 - which I liked but I think they just had too much cushion (and too high of a heel to toe drop) for me. I am back in New Balance 870s and feeling great! Also picked up a pair of Mizuno Wave Precisions that I need to break in to have a pair at work and a pair at home so I don't have to keep lugging one pair back and forth. I think the best fit for me is a neutral shoe, moderate support, and heel-toe drop between 5 and 8 mm.

so the 19th I had a 10K from hell at the Lehigh Valley Zoo.....2 miles uphill then another mile later on that was up hills....sucked....hurts.... and i just got the call i made our Army 10 mile team, but i had to turn it down because i have the runners world 10K the day before, and i don't want to run that, then drive 5 hours to run 10 miles the next day.
my ITBS is acting up bad enough that in addition to my knee hurting, my hip is hurting too...and the blasted chub rub killed me the last mile of the 10K.

Twenty-five pounds lost! Woo hoo! Five more and I will reach my 30 pound goal, not bad. ;D
Now all I need to do is tone and maintain until next September.

Great job everyone!
Yesterday I finally joined the local road runners group (well, it is in the nearest town - 15 miles away) and did their Monday fun run. It was a good time. 6 miles through town and I kept up my goal marathon pace the whole time - and felt like I could have probably gone 6 more.
My ankles are killing me today though - I think it is the concrete sidewalks that I am not used to. This week my goal is to get to the gym and start doing leg and glute exercises to strengthen those muscles that don't get used while running. I might even borrow my dad's ankle weights and wear them on the treadmill for a few minutes every night.

I got in an 8 mile long run over the weekend. It didn't feel great, but i wasn't terrible, either.. Just sucks to think that to finish the half I still have another 5+ miles to go. I should be up for it, though. I have almost a month left to train.

I went back last week and struggled some with this damn asthma. I need to get in the habit of using my inhaler every day. I'm in limbo right now bc my gym bag was stolen out of my car Friday night. My new shoes are on the way and I need ear buds and a lock for the locker and I'm set to go back.

Put in a 10.5 run on Sunday morning. Definitely my best run in a long time. It felt good and I was able to keep just over a 9 minute pace. I am happy about that and if I am able to get in one more 10+ run I will be ready to go.

I am dizzy again from another ear infection. Hoping to get the ear buds soon. Got the lock over the weekend.

Long overdue update. I moved to a new country (kind of: from Scotland to England) and my routine was disrupted for a little while. Once I got settled I went to a Body Combat class at the local leisure centre and it was terrible: overcrowded, badly organized, indifferent instructor and unfriendly atmosphere.
So I decided to try Crossfit since there was a box here (there wasn't one where I used to live) and they offered a free trial class. They had me flipping massive tires at my trial class and it was fun but I was sore for several days after! I decided to sign up for the 3 times a week package as it is just on a month-by-month basis with no contract, and I am loving it.
It's pretty much like small group personal training (the biggest class I've been to had 11 people but often there is just 4 - 6 of us per session) so you get a lot of attention, and the coach has been working on my shoulder flexibility which has really improved. Wish someone had helped me with that about a decade ago... Am loving the Olympic lifting and am starting to get the hang of some of them I think.
I'm taking part in a regional competition tomorrow and am confident I will finish last for all 4 events :-) It's much more challenging that what I was used to at my old gym, where I was one of the strongest and fittest women in the group exercise sessions. Now I am often the only woman in the class and even if I am not I am still the weakest person there. It gives me more incentive to work hard and I feel more challenged.
I'm also eating a lot better (my diet wasn't horrendous before but with the long hours and commuting it wasn't perfect). I can't fully buy into the low carb/ Paleo thing but I am eating far less processed food and a lot more fresh vegetables and I feel like I have a lot more energy. Of course, it helps that I am only working part time just now and live close enough to work that I can walk home for lunch :-)

Today for the first time since I was....oh about 10 years old I ran a whole mile. Then I walked 1/4 of a mile...and then my friend grabbed me and made me run another 1/4 of a mile....and then I walked a 1/4 of a mile. So in total I ran 1.25 miles. The first mile I ran without stopping! Of course I felt like I was going to puke and cry the whole time. But my friend refused to let me give up and I DID IT! I didn't even puke. We are going to run again on Friday.

GFY, Imanangel. Every day exercising is progress.
I had visions of doing a k.a. workout on the precor today. Visions of turning it up to 20 like I did earlier in Sept. Laughing at the machine as in, is that all you've got? A few weeks off or reduced intensity, and I get a precor body slam. It's a machine, it can't laugh.
I had an unexpected breathing issue at high altitude when I exercised. The exercise induced asthma I have heard about. Unnerving. Contributing factors along with the high altitude were high pollen content and I hadn't kept steady on my allergy med. There were intense forest fires with a lot of smoke haze in the air.
Always the upside is I was exercising.

Go Angel! Good job!
I had a dermatology appointment today and the medical assistant updated my height and weight. The computer flashed a warning message because my weight is down 14% since I was last weighed (by another doctor in the same hospital network) in January! I always talk about the actual number of pounds lost (26, so close to my 30 pound goal!), but seeing it as a percentage was a huge motivator for me!

Completed my first-ever half marathon today! ;D
I did super great for the first 8 miles, and then I twisted or did something to my knee. The last 5 miles weren't fun, for the most part, but I finished.
I finished 24 seconds under my goal time - though I was planning on being 5+ minutes under it. Oh well - live and learn! Gotta run slower!

You're looking plenty trim there, Ratchets. If you're around 6' tall, 200's not a bad weight - 185 would be probably be the lowest end of the bar to go.
Healthly eating & plenty of exercise works - the supplements (IMO) are a lot of hype - for those who are either too lazy or don't want to put 100% effort into changing their lifestyle/eating habits. Plus, as you mentioned, the expense.
