Artemis, I do stretches before and after I run, but I guess I am not doing them long enough or something. This morning I took the morning off from running. We will be back out running tomorrow morning.

I really think it is probably your shoes. I do minimal stretching before I run and hardly any after unless I feel tight, and I usually am not sore at all (maybe for an hour or two if I sit down and don't move after I run). But when my running shoes were getting worn out, my shins and feet hurt after every run.

I need to get back to the gym. It has been a week since I've been. I was going to go Saturday before I left for vacation but our town had no power. I swam in the ocean yesterday and was at the beach twice.
There is a branch of my gym here so I will go this afternoon after my lunch settles.

I added stretch cords to my workouts. Something to help my arms/back/shoulders/legs while I'm on the couch in the evenings.

Imanangel: Since you are doing the stretches before/after, then that's not the problem. I would suggest 2 ibuprofen with food before you run. This made a world of difference for me and one of my tennis playing friends. We are no longer tired all the rest of the day.
I don't know if you are into supplements or not. We used to take amino acid complex before a days downhill skiing. That did help. I don't recommend it at night as it will keep you awake.
I don't know why I stopped taking the amino acids. I will look into using them again. I have a hunch the number of supplements I was taking were too many or I didn't need them for a time and forgot after that.
I don't run right now as I have enough exercise.

There is a lot of differing studies on this, but a lot of running boards I follow recommend Tylenol over ibuprofen or other NSAIDs. Something about how NSAIDs affect the kidneys can be harmful during endurance runs. Something like they don't allow enough water to be absorbed or something (don't quote me on that though). So I would recommend tylenol to be safe.

Goose and DSD are making me run today. They hate me...or they are telling me I am still chubby. I will try to take a Tylenol before I run and see how it goes.

Angel, go to a running store (I assume someone can help you in Italy); it made a world of difference for me! As soon as I got new shoes my shins stopped hurting.
I had the Color Run today! It was so much! I need to take a second shower to get rid of some stubborn blue and purple or else I'm wearing long sleeves to work tomorrow!

I was entertained during my Afit workout by a girl doing her ballet exercises. They must have been from out of town because they didn't know which door their key fob opened. I do hope they weren't expired as they entered on my fob.
Nothing new to report. The tater chips win out during the afternoon. ----------- I didn't know about the switch to Tylenol. I use what works for me. I do know that ibuprofen on an empty stomach is a no-no.

I've never run 10 miles before. i'm still debating on whether i am going to do the Army 10 miler, since I have the Runner's World 10K the day before, and a nice long drive to DC after a race just isn't something i'm looking forward to...(the races are in OCT) I'll run the 10 mile 2nd qualifier in August to see what my time ends up being and then I'll decide, though i really think maybe i'll put it off until next year. But it's not like I can't do the training runs, which are fun and longer distances.

okay.... here I go, back on the wagon yet again. This whole moving/unpacking thing is really messing up my dieting. I want to cook more, but since we have no dishwasher cleaning up takes twice as much time and effort and after a full day at work, helping care for the baby, and cooking dinner I just don't have the energy. I need to just suck it up and buy more sandwich odds and ends for lunches and quick dinners. They have got to be healthier than Sonic/Five Guys/Wendy's/pizza, right?
Did 40 mins of yoga today and I'm tracking my food on myfitnesspal again. Hopefully I can make it through the week since we're now going to Cape May next weekend.

I haven't gone running in 2 days. My last run really took a toll on my knees. They were swollen or something for 2 days! I am trying to find a running store to get new shoes to see if that helps. I cannot live on pain killers and that is what I ended up doing yesterday and today.

Definitely try to find a running store. My new shoes helped so much. I've also been doing stuff to strengthen my quads because I think that was part of my problem with the one knee.

I finally hit double digits on a run last week - 10 miles! Unfortunately it was on the treadmill because of the heat, and I run slower on there, but 10 miles is still 10 miles!
I am on vacation this week, but I got my 3 miles in today plus a lot of swimming. But we are also eating a lot too!
I have a 5k scheduled for two weekends from now and a trail 15k scheduled for the last weekend in July.

Just did 2.86 miles. My regular gym is way too hot for me. I seem to have no luck at cracking 3 miles.

I was soaked head to toes in sweat, purple faced after golfing 18 holes and the temperature was 94 degrees when I finished. A little breeze helped.
I didn't get light headed or feel way overheated. I have heat issues and this was a test to see if I'm getting better. I do not work out this hard in the gym and could not duplicate it.

I only got in two runs last week on vacation - 3 miles each. It was a 19 mile week and I only ran 6. Oops!
But I ran 5 miles last night and felt super awesome; I think the rest helped me. I did have a dog follow me for about half a mile (I run in a really rural area with mostly farms), but it finally went back home and I took a different route back to my house so it wouldn't follow me again.
I do carry pepper spray while running, but any dogs or other animals I have encountered are not mean. I had this dog (looked like a shephard/pit mix because of its coloring) and have had a doberman come out of its yard at me before too. But they have both been super sweet. On the other hand, my one friend has been bitten by dogs twice while running - not sure if she behaves differently than I do when I encounter dogs or what!
This Saturday I have a 5k and then next Sunday I have a 15k!

Way to go Steph. 5k then 15k. Your friend who has dog trouble, it could be her laundry soap or bath soap. I know wasps are attracted to Irish Spring. It could be the sound of her foot drop on the surface. Another hot, sweaty day on the golf course. I played my former home course that is being brought back from being flooded last summer. Only 9 holes are open but they are very nice. We played that 9 twice. A dismal score.

My second 5k was today, and I shaved almost a minute off my time! 26:31 was my official time. I thought I wasn't going to best my old time when I was told of my time at the first mile marker - after the race I found out that it was really at the 1.1 mile mark. I think I could have done better if I had heard my real first mile split, instead I think I didn't push myself as hard.
Damn is racing tough. Haha. I will never be very fast and I don't know how other people do it. Guess I will have to start adding speedwork to my running workouts.

Another great run for you steph and a minute off your time. You are running against yourself and the clock.
I spent a wild night dancing the night away last night.

I just read through all nine pages of this thread - you guys all rock! I have always wished that I could run, but I have so many little quirks with my body parts that exercising is very hard for me. I tried to run even as a teen, but I get shin splints so bad I have to give it up. I've never been able to figure out why - the last few years I've wondered if it has to do with my scoliosis. My hips (and consequently my legs) are out of alignment. I don't know ft that's it, but nevertheless, I've never been able to. And I have neuromas in both feet (the right one is the worst) so I have to be so careful exercising. I have such a bad back also. My knees aren't in that great shape either. I could probably go on and on, but you get the gist. I have lost 30 pounds since May, so that's a good thing. I finally realized that health issues were creeping up on me, so I took a mental shake and started eating better, almost no processed foods, and very few carbs. I'm gluten sensitive so I can't really eat alot of carbs anyhow. I do eat brown rice, GF oatmeal, and a baked potato or sweet potato from time to time. I take the pup out for a walk most evenings or early mornings on weekends (those days are longer). I also started doing a stretch class at work in the mornings, and that helps alot. I have problems with my tail bone, so I have to be super careful doing floor stuff. My goals are to start working with weights again, and maybe get on the eliptical. It gives my neuromas a fit if I'm not careful - I can't do anything on the upper part of my feet near the toes - and I find myself working on my toes when on it. Thanks for all of the motivation - I'm getting ready to get into something since cable seems to be out . Alicia - just curious - which Army 10 miler are you thinking about? DD is in the Army and she did the one in DC last year. Unless you are in the front of the pack it's just a fun race. There were close to 30,000 people last year, and technically it runs through alot of Crystal City, so you don't have much moving around room. She had a great time though! She almost didn't make it because she didn't pay attention to where the start area was (Pentagon parking lot) so instead of going to the Pentagon City parking lot and walking across the street, she drove around DC in the early morning trying to find a metro station. Can't tell you what our phone conversation was like, because she gets VERY bent when she can't find where she's going! She finally found someplace to park and get on the metro - she didn't even pay attention to which stop she was at! She literally got to the starting line a few minutes before she had to start. Her chip didn't work for some reason, so other than the fact they have a closeup picture at the finish line, you wouldn't know she ran it!

Ran my 15k today. It was a trail run and very, very challenging. Basically all hills on single lane tracks through the woods and over creeks, around fallen trees, etc. It took me 2:02:32 and I was running pretty hard the whole time. It just takes so much longer to go over rocks and tree roots and not fall, etc. Running on a road, I could have done it at least half an hour faster!
But it was really fun. It reminded me of being a kid playing in the woods, not caring about getting muddy, jumping back and forth over obstacles, etc. I might have to take up trail running!

Ok, got me some new running shoes! Hopefully it will cool off soon so I can get back to running. I haven't been able to pull myself out of bed early enough in the morning to do it...and by 9 am it is so flipping hot and humid here that I would die if I tried to run. Some of the ladies I know run around 8 pm, but I don't know how they are even doing that. It is still very humid at that time. Maybe I am just a baby?
Goose wants to do some 7 mile run and I am 100% positive I won't be ready for it in time. It is in a month....I will go and support him and DSD though.

I haven't updated in a while, so here goes!
It's been hot. I've been lazy. But last week (a couple of weeks ago?) I tried to get back on somewhat of a normal schedule, so I've been using the work gym 1-2 times a week, sticking to the weight machines and the treadmill. Even though I haven't been working out as much, I've been sticking with my calorie counting and I am down a couple of pounds (24 total since January), so I plateaued for a couple of weeks, which is perfectly okay, considering there have been some burritos for lunch two days in a row moments. I haven't been beating myself up, so I've managed to not put on any weight even with vacation eating. ;D
I do jogging and fast-paced walking intervals and my jogging intervals are slowing increasing. Last week my total minutes of jogging were 17 minutes and my fast walking minutes were 15. This week, they were 18 and 14. So, slowly but surely I'll be a runner at some point! Once this heat breaks I'll go back to jogging outside and I'll be more inclined to do an hour's workout; the temperature in the work gym gets unbearable after 30 minutes.
I am six pounds from a total weight loss of 30 pounds, which I think is just right. I did my measurements the other day and I am pretty much exactly a size 10. This is where I want to be a year before my wedding! A size 8-10 is perfect to me. I figure I can spend the winter months concentrating on weight training and pilates, with the treadmill in there as well. I've been loving lace dresses with keyhole backs, so I need to have a nice back by next September!

I went for a run today. I ran 3 minutes and then power walked for about 10...ran 3 minutes...power walked for about 15...Yes, I did way more walking than running but at least I tried.
Not sure if my new shoes are going to be good for me or not. I don't know if my ankles are sore because of the shoes or the fact we did trail running today and the ground was rocky?
