The Swiss Guards at the Vatican might be seen to be a standing army.

But armies of Big Business greenbacks are only symbolic until deployed by acquiring and organizing mercenaries.  Some may see them as potential armed forces, but the deployment of government armed forces is such a frequently repeated historic norm, and by the American armed forces in particular, that such speculative armies need not be worried about until the REAL, EXISTANT, WELL DEFINED PROBLEM is controlled.

I highly recommend a subscription to Foreign Policy. In a recent article they have outlined exactly what I have been saying for years, China Has a Plan to Take Over Central Asia — and America Loves It. It's not so much about Central Asia as it is about how China fully intends on creating trade through Asia, building on the American business model - Central Asia is merely the terminus of this new world wide economic system.
