None of this changes the fundamentals that I see because I was never counting on a boom, and I am NOT counting on one for a very long time since the govt debt level is where it is at. The fact is we are relying on countries that have to elevate slaves to fill that spending. It will happen; it’s just going to take a long time. That’s why I say buy on the dips, hold on the rips! 12,100 was still the low from the middle of June, would have been a great time to put some cash to work long term.

Here's a good one. The OP of this thread is literally the world is coming into balance and dont listen to the media because the USA is going to make it. Early in 2011 this thread was outlining how the East was copying the west and how China was under serious presserue socially and financially. That because of freedom and democracy that started here, in North America, which has spread around the world, wages were becoming a serious issue in developing economies. Because of this fact, the hypothesis was that we are moving towards servicing our own economies while still operating inside of a global economy(oil exports). That was 2011, some interesting facts from 2013.

How the U.S. won the global rebalancing game

A striking decline in the U.S. trade deficit to its lowest level in four years in November reflects an ongoing improvement in the nation’s exports and a dramatic decline in its dependence on foreign goods and services. Both of those will improve the economy’s sustainability and job-creating potential. But for many in the rest of the world, it’s a frustrating turn of events.

The U.S. economy is in the best shape of the past six years — underscored by everything from purchasing manager surveys to stronger construction spending — and is outperforming most of its advanced-country peers. But whereas past periods of U.S. outperformance coincided with increased American spending on imports and a widening deficit, the opposite is happening now. Deficits are not only falling as a proportion of GDP; they are declining in absolute terms — a complete about-face from prior trends.

The U.S. trade deficit got to 6% of GDP at the end of 2006; it’s now about 2.5%. A similar decline has been seen in the current account deficit, which measures the full array of America’s transactions with the rest of the world. On the flipside, China’s current account surplus has dropped from 10.1% of GDP in 2007 to around 2.3%. The crisis was the breaking point that corrected those imbalances.

“As economists at the time were saying, that size of external imbalances was just unsustainable,” says Paul Sheard, chief global economist at Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services. “There were two ways it would unwind: in a disorderly fashion or an orderly one. It turned out to be disorderly.”

The rebalancing has manifested in the U.S. manufacturing more cars at home, producing more domestic energy — for which it was helped by the shale oil and gas revolution — and buying fewer credit card-funded knickknacks. But it has also translated into losses for manufacturers from other countries.

Ideally, other economies would be joining the U.S. in economic recovery, boosting aggregate global demand to the benefit of all. But circumstances and policy imperatives will constrain foreign growth in the medium-term. So, the U.S. gets the next-best thing: an accelerating domestic recovery, facilitated by accommodative monetary policy, low inflation and an anchored dollar.

In the 1870's when the USA rose to power it was on American food, energy, and innovation, and the civil war had already happened. At the 'End of History' Still Stands Democracy

I argued that History (in the grand philosophical sense) was turning out very differently from what thinkers on the left had imagined. The process of economic and political modernization was leading not to communism, as the Marxists had asserted and the Soviet Union had avowed, but to some form of liberal democracy and a market economy. History, I wrote, appeared to culminate in liberty: elected governments, individual rights, an economic system in which capital and labor circulated with relatively modest state oversight.

Looking back at that essay from the present moment, let's begin with an obvious point: The year 2014 feels very different from 1989.

Russia is a menacing electoral authoritarian regime fueled by petrodollars, seeking to bully its neighbors and take back territories lost when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. China remains authoritarian but now has the second-largest economy in the world, as well as its own territorial ambitions in the South and East China Seas. As the foreign-policy analyst Walter Russell Mead recently wrote, old-fashioned geopolitics has returned big time, and global stability is being threatened at both ends of Eurasia.

The problem in today's world isn't just that authoritarian powers are on the move but that many existing democracies aren't doing well either. Take Thailand, whose frayed political fabric gave way last month to a military coup, or Bangladesh, whose system remains in thrall to two corrupt political machines. Many countries that seemed to have made successful democratic transitions—Turkey, Sri Lanka, Nicaragua—have been backsliding into authoritarian practices. Others, including recent additions to the European Union like Romania and Bulgaria, are still plagued by corruption.

And then there are the developed democracies. Both the U.S. and the European Union experienced severe financial crises in the past decade, which meant anemic growth and high unemployment, especially for young people. Though the U.S. economy has now started to expand again, the benefits haven't been evenly shared, and the country's polarized and partisan political system hardly seems a shining example for other democracies.

So has my end-of-history hypothesis been proven wrong, or if not wrong, in need of serious revision? I believe that the underlying idea remains essentially correct, but I also now understand many things about the nature of political development that I saw less clearly during the heady days of 1989.

When observing broad historical trends, it is important not to get carried away by short-term developments. The hallmark of a durable political system is its long-term sustainability, not its performance in any given decade.

Let's consider, to begin with, how dramatically economic and political systems have changed over the last two generations. On the economic front, the world economy saw a massive increase in output, roughly quadrupling between the early 1970s and the financial crisis of 2007-08. Though the crisis was a large setback, levels of prosperity throughout the world have increased massively and on all continents. This has come about because the world has been knit together in a liberal system of trade and investment. Even in communist countries such as China and Vietnam, market rules and competition dominate.

Huge changes have taken place in the political sphere as well. In 1974, according to the Stanford University democracy expert Larry Diamond, there were only about 35 electoral democracies, which represented something less than 30% of the world's countries. By 2013, that number had expanded to about 120, or more than 60% of the total. The year 1989 marked only a sudden acceleration of a broader trend that the late Harvard political scientist Samuel Huntington labeled the "third wave" of democratization, a wave that had begun with the transitions in southern Europe and Latin America some 15 years earlier and would later spread to sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

The emergence of a market-based global economic order and the spread of democracy are clearly linked. Democracy has always rested on a broad middle class, and the ranks of prosperous, property-holding citizens have ballooned everywhere in the past generation...

China has accumulated huge hidden liabilities by poisoning its soil and air, and while the government remains more responsive than most authoritarian systems, the country's growing middle class likely won't accept the current system of corrupt paternalism when times get tough. China no longer projects a universalistic ideal beyond its own borders, as it did in the revolutionary days of Mao. With its rising levels of inequality and the massive advantages enjoyed by the politically connected, the "Chinese dream" represents nothing more than a route for a relative few to get rich quickly.....

China economic clout good for U.S.

PPP is not the best measure for China's economic footprint in the world. There, the U.S. remains the champ. The median per capita income in the U.S. is around six times higher than in China.

China is, nevertheless, gaining economically, and Chinese spending power is climbing. That can be great news for our economy -- and for comity between our two countries. A stronger Chinese economy expands the ranks of Chinese businesses and middle-class consumers and also the ranks of new buyers of American exports. As China grows, U.S. trade increases with other countries that are selling ever more to China and need American goods to do it. U.S. mining and construction equipment, for example, finds its way to Australia, Canada and Brazil so those country's minerals can find their way to Chinese ports.

Yet, the prospect of Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) in the U.S. — the kind where Chinese investors buy or establish businesses within our borders -- may provide an even more important link. China already holds around $1.3 trillion in U.S. Treasury debt, but it can cash out of those any time. "At the economic level," former secretary of Treasury Hank Paulson recently said, "the most enduring economic relationship between countries is direct investment, not what countries exchange in trade or put in Treasuries." Paulson notes that China's FDI in the U.S. pales compared to the rest of its international portfolio, but it is growing.

In 2013, China's businesses spent $14 billion acquiring U.S. firms or starting branches on our soil. Chinese have spent around half that in the first three months of 2014 alone. American policy makers in Washington bemoan China's growing clout, but in the states, cities and local chambers of commerce, leaders are working hard to attract Chinese companies that can create good jobs. Around 5.3 million Americans work for outposts of foreign firms in the U.S. On average, they make close to $78,000, or 30% more than the U.S. average overall. That's eight times the average per capita income of a Chinese worker.
Still, China is now the world's fastest growing big economy. If we are smart about letting Chinese investment in, we can grow richer still as China continues to prosper, and economic ties dispel scarier inclinations.

Southern states in U.S. woo Chinese investors

They’re coming, and from a most unlikely place: Henan Province, China, 7,600 miles away.

Xi Says China Conflict With U.S. Would Be Disaster

China’s President Xi Jinping called for greater military communication with the U.S., saying as he opened high-level talks between the two countries that any conflict would be a global disaster.

China needs a stable environment “more than ever,” and it’s inevitable that the two sides will have some disputes, Xi said at the Diaoyutai guest house before the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing.

“A conflict between China and United States will definitely be a disaster for the two countries and the world,” Xi said. “As long as we uphold mutual respect, maintain strategic patience and remain unperturbed by individual incidents and comments, we’ll be able to keep relations on a firm footing despite ups and downs that may come our way.”

Finally, finally, finally. The news that I have been waiting three years for finally broke the other day.

Even though the BRICS' $100 Billion New Development Bank is merely a drop in the bucket, it's a step towards self sufficiency for the eastern half of the world. Now, all these countries will have to start having some accountable when it comes down to their own economies instead of relying on the IMF and the World Bank to continuously bail them out.

It also means that all this money that the west has essentially been throwing down the rat hole can start going to rebuilding our aging infrastructure and strengthening our own economies.

Talk about a long term boon for companies that are already well established globally, and in turn the global economy.

Who pays you to write this spin. The USA is far from accountable when it comes to fiscal and monetary policy.

BRICS is a step away from the Bretton woods system that has dominated the financial world for decades. The death of the petrodollar.  The fact is they have no faith in our huge amount of debt or the declining value of the dollar. 

Step one was the  450 billion oil deal between Russia and China. It wasn't paid in dollars but yuan and rubles .  We talked about BRICS in length some time ago . I do believed we were laughed at . Now it's a reality and not so funny.

Damn, no one pays me to write this stuff, I do it because I have made friends on this site and I like to share my thoughts. Unlike these conspiracy propaganda rags that are out there that are filled with gold advertisements, and urban survival advertisements.... You want to know who pays all the tax, aside from corporations, read this. It's the top 10% of wage earners, the same people who own the corporations.

You guys were laughed at because of the commie/Islamic spin you put on the BRICS situation. This isn't a move away from the Bretton Woods system, it's an extension of it.

For starters, without the IMF and the world bank(the west) there is no BRICS. It was, in fact, big western banks that spearheaded the creation of the BRICS and coined the term in the first place. The first BRICS meeting took place in NYC, and all five members are part of the G20! All of this is either lost on the conspiracy community or they are selectively choosing which part of history to include in this line of conspiracy story they are selling(I pick the latter).

The conspiracy community continues to spew that China has "lost faith" in the USD and the USA's ability to pay back debt. Only problem there is that China has bought record amounts of UST in the first five months of this year(2014). In fact, since this fantasy was first floated a few years back, China's holdings of UST has only got bigger. So while the USA may not be the best at managing fiscal and monetary policy(I never said it was) China is a long way off from "losing faith in the USA". In fact, I remember back in 2009-2010 the big story was that China was buying/owned the USA!! Hahahah.

As far as a challenger for biggest reserve currency, that title right now goes to the Euro. In fact, over the last 15-20 years the idea of a single reserve currency has gone by the wayside because of the sheer volume of the global economy. The PETRO dollar is also a non issue now. Why? Because the USA is poised to become the largest oil producer in the world! Canada isn't far behind, and guess what? All these developing nations need our food and fuel to continue their development and we only accept USD.

Right now I'm hoping that these BRICS can get their act together and pull this off because there is already a ton on infighting among them as China wants to be the big dog, and the others don't want this to be the case. However, if they do pull this off why is it good for everyone? Again, because they will finally be putting their OWN cash into their OWN development and this will force them to make the reforms that they have been talking about for 30+ years.

As the standard of living goes up around the world and currencies balance out, there will be a level playing field across the globe. The result of this is everyone will be servicing their own economies and the west will be able to focus on rebuilding our OWN economy.

I'm not painting you as a conspiracy artist, but as they say, if the shoe fits.
