In Innovation Race, China Is Not Yet a Rival, Study Says

Innovation is a decidedly tricky thing to measure. Patents are the most widely used yardstick, but they are an imperfect gauge of innovation at best.

A report by Thomson Reuters, published on Tuesday, tries to draw a more accurate link between corporate patent filings and real innovation. It does so by measuring not only the number of patents a company files, but also the influence, global reach and success of its patents.

The result is a list of the 100 most innovative companies in the world, not ranked, just in or out. Most of the names on the list are no surprise. Forty percent are from America, including I.B.M., Apple, Microsoft, Boeing, Exxon Mobile and Intel.

One surprise: Not a single Chinese company is on the list. Yet China has become the most prolific patent filer in the world, pursuing a national plan to become an economy based on innovation rather than imitation.

The Chinese plan calls for its corporations and individual investors to file two million patents by 2015, which would dwarf the current filing rate in the United States. David J. Kappos, director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, has called the Chinese patent targets “mind-blowing numbers.”

But patent numbers — like standardized test scores — aren’t everything. To rank high on the Thomson Reuters innovation-weighted scale, patents must meet other criteria: success (ratio of patents filed to those granted in the last three years), global (filed in the four main patent offices, United States, Europe, Japan and China) and influence (how often patents are cited by others).

China’s no-show status in the list, said Bob Stembridge, an intellectual property analyst at Thomson Reuters, seems surprising, but it can be explained. The Chinese patent surge, he said, is “explosive but recent.” Chinese filers are “focusing on the domestic market first,” he added. So Chinese companies would tend to suffer in the Thomson Reuters scoring because recent patents are less likely to be cited, and patents filed only in China lack global reach.

Software patents, it seems, are another example of a flood of filings not counting for so much, according to Thomson Reuters. The industries with the most companies on the research firm’s innovators list were semiconductors and chemicals. Computer software companies as a group came in 10th, just behind transportation equipment.

Critics of software patents would say the low ranking points to the poor quality of many software patents, patenting the obvious rather than genuine inventions. Partly true, no doubt, but Mr. Stembridge also said software patents were far more difficult to obtain in Europe than in America. Software, then, would lag by the research firm’s standard of global significance.

The 100 innovative companies selected by Thomson Reuters did well in 2010. They added 400,000 jobs, while sales on average rose 13 percent. It does appear to be more than a coincidence, even though there is a lot more to corporate success than filing high-quality patents.

I have to hand it to old Alex Jones at the infowars. He has come across documents that apparently prove that the Bilderberg group is a globalist cabal that has a war against nationalism. His biggest piece of evidence is from (D) Fred R. Harris, handwritten notes taken over three days.

Had Mr. Jones done any REAL detective work, he would have realized that these notes were merely a summary of what each individual was talking about at the weekend event in 1966. How do I know Mr. Harris wasn’t against nationalism? His biggest claim to fame is returning lands to Native Americans that were taken from them by Theodore Roosevelt (aka. restoring a NATION!)

That last part about GOD is what really set old Alex and the conspiracy nuts off. What they don't understand is that it's actually a very old saying, just said in a new way. What it means is that if we all strive to be good to each other, we now truly have the ability to become a gift to God.

China is stalling! China is stalling! Since there is Ghost everything in China we know there is a problem. Since we know that China's manufacturing is stalling because of wages, fuel prices, and a slow slog in the Western world as we get back to banking basics. We know it's going to be hard to fill those empty places in China off of the current situation. A few hundred million people COULD move into these places IF their their service economy really took off. How does China make all this happen as their middle and upper class want North American ICONIC products? Free Enterprise, NOT STALINIZATION!
