Girlfriends - Don't feel like you have to wait until 2013 - post 'em now to share what you're thinking. Nothing's written in stone (or undelete-able electrons) - you can always change things!

Saving....not ready to post yet. Trying to decide if I will stick with my savings plans as is while making payments to debt or if I am going to pretty much put savings on hold and try and blast through debt. Reevaluating budget, calling on things to see if I can get a better deal/pay less, looking into refi on my house and car, etc.
We will see what the next couple weeks bring first!

As for 2013, at the moment I'm pretty set on a total savings goal of $10k or $11k. It's the categories that are being tweaked. I want to be a little aggressive next year, as I'm planning to change my work situation by the end of 2013.

We have returned from our trip to Austin for the US Grand Prix and we came in way under-budget. Part of it due to using airline miles for our tickets, and part of it from my DH having saved some money for the trip as well. (My saving habits rubbing off on him, perhaps??) Either way I've got a healthy chunk of change to either: A) put back into savings for 2013, B) spend on Christmas, or C) Buy a $$$$ puppy I've had my eye on.
I've always loved Bernese Mountain Dogs. They're very similar to St. Bernards, but darker. One of my kids' families has a momma dog who is days away from giving birth. The family has said they would save one for me. We are busy DINKS so I'd have to make a concerted effort to get home from school quicker. (Currently 10-11 hour days) And I know you have to do a really good, consistent job at doing good quality puppy training so they don't chew up your entire house. That would stink. So, I'm reaaaaaaly wanting a puppy, but between the 4-digit dollar figure and the serious commitment I'm a smidge hesitant.
Smart, any words of puppy-mom wisdom?
How 'bout you, Dogmom? What kinds of questions should I be asking myself / my DH?

S4N -
My thoughts probably won't help you decide, but I'll put them out there anyhow.
Positives: My grandparents' neighbors have had Bernese Mountain Dogs for quite a while (1 at a time) but they have always gotten adult rescues and never a puppy. The ones they have had have always been mellow and fantastic dogs. I think if you're looking for a large breed dog, then those are a great choice.
Negatives: 1) I think you like to travel, based on your posts and screen name. It is hard to find someone to take perfect care of your pets while you are gone, dogs especially since they seem so much more attached to their owners than cats do. You can't just pack up a 100+ lb dog and take it over to your best friend's house who lives in a 1 BR apartment, etc. 2) Cost - though I have an expensive Dalmatian, so I don't see a problem spending money on a specific breed if that's what you want. However, perhaps you could find a rescue and then not have to worry about the puppy problem? Also, my Dalmatian ended up having allergies which she takes pills for and my Basset Hound has glaucoma and she's had to have an eye removed and we have to put drops in her remaining eye every day. 3) Time - I really think Bernese Mountain dogs (all dogs really) need to have a good, long walk every day. Unfortunately, because everyone works at my house, the most my Dal gets is 15 min of chasing the tennis ball daily and a 30 min walk a couple times a week. We have a huge yard, so the two dogs play together quite a bit, but I know it would be better if they could get out and get a long walk every day. BMD also need a good brushing frequently (at least from what I've seen my grandparent's neighbors in the back yard doing) and paying a groomer to bathe etc can be quite expensive. My Dal is $45 and my BH is $35 for basic trip to the groomers, which I really can't afford to do often enough.
We plan to travel quite a bit in our upcoming years, and I won't be getting any more pets after these 2 are gone. Hopefully I'm not projecting my thoughts (I probably am) but I'd really consider getting a dog, and such a large dog, if you want to travel regularly.
As another thought, have you considered getting 2 dogs? It really is nice for them to have a friend. They seem to do well potty training when there are 2, and they have each other to chew on instead of your furniture.

Debt's post brought me here Saving. My advise, follow your heart in adopting a new family member. In itself, we've never been disappointed. But, since we are in a somewhat financial arena, things to look at. p8nt brings up a good point about what a pet really costs. Besides the initial fee for your new family member, there are other considerations. Financially, there is the additional outlay for food and toys. Health care for us was a consideration. Shots, microchip, rabies shot, wellness shots...to a tune of about $300. (in our area) for a vet visit. We do insure our girl. Most people don't think about insurance, but, for long term pet parents, it bears some looking into. Our girl's insurance costs us just shy of $500.00 a year. It reimburses some shots, stool samples, etc. She just turned seven on Black Friday. We got her from a shelter when she was just a few months old. Her insurance started out at about $200.00 per year. Since then, she needed two ACL's done. One emergency, one because she tore the other one. About $3500.00 per back leg. Insurance refunded about half. Grooming, yes, she goes every three to six months. $60.00 per visit. I don't want to scare you out of a new family member, but pm me if you have other questions.

Saving4Norway: I would see if you could be an "adoptive" family for a dog first. The local shelters usually need folks to care for dogs until they can be adopted at pet adoption sites. That way you can see if you would like having a dog and can commit to the care/time/money they will cost. We've always had dog/cats but recently lost our beloved Tigger kitty to advanced kidney failure. Our doggy had to be put to sleep @ 5 years ago so we are currently petless. As much as I loved our pets, I don't think we'll be getting another any time soon. We do have some cats that have claimed our back yard as their stomping ground since our dog's passing. One or two will let me get close so I can get my furry friend fix that way.

Well, it's a good thing I haven't put my 2013 savings goals in permanent ink yet. I will be having to move sometime in the next few months, and will be covering a rent increase until I find a more suitable place. Bummer. But I want to take the opportunity to downsize a bit, so I'm hoping that I will be able to make it worthwhile by reducing my expenses with a new, slightly smaller place/cost. Here's hoping!

Rocky, you too?? I've shored mine up so many times I don't even want to look until the holidays are over!! Saved $500. Spent $280 on Black Friday and another $200 today [went in to Staples for a pencil sharpener, walked out with a new networking printer ~~ totally justifying purchase]. So there goes my budget. Still have $50 restaurant gift card, primary present for GD and GS2. GS1 breaks his cell so often that I'm just fixing it for him. So I think I'm going over by $100. Fortunately I'll have that Friday

I'm going to post tomorrow's update today, as I'm currently without a computer at home. I had to have the 150k maintenance done on my vehicle, and it was a bit more than I'd budgeted for. Hence the slight backslide on this month's update. But the vehicle is in good shape and super-reliable, so it's a good investment. I'll be back with an update in a week or two to bring that fund back up with a reimbursement check. So it's all good in the end! In other news, though, I'm looking at a significantly cheaper place to live. So that might make 2013 much better on the savings front(!), as well as accelerate my plans to change jobs. But I'm still not contracted to anything, so I'm going to be conservative on my savings goals until I know something concrete. FUND | 2012 GOALS | JAN1st | CURRENT | SPENT | % MET |

UPDATE P8nt 11/30/12 $4000.00 (3/3/12 $1.25 Goal $12,000) Fund | Goals | Starting | Current | Remaining | % of Goal | Emergency Fund | $2,000.00 | $1.25 | $2,000.00 | $0.00 | 100% | Vacation Fund | $2,000.00 | $0.00 | $2,000.00 | $0.00 | 100% | Student Teaching | $8,000.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $8,000.00 | 0% | TOTAL | $12,000.00 | $1.25 | $4,000.00 | $8,000.00 | 33% |
I'll probably have at least one more savings deposit before the end of the year. I'm happy with reaching the 2 goals. I already have the Student Teaching money, as I have a large pay out coming when I'm done with my miserable job on 1/2/13. My initial 2013 goal is going to be to finish my student teaching (Jan - May) without taking any money out of my savings account.

I am making progress on all my goals . For the repayment savings I ended up making a chart to help me see how much I've repaid.

I'm not going to put a update total because with the conversion from 2012 to 2013 things kinda get lost in translation. I know I'm somewhere in the neighborhood of $25K in 2012.

Update: Teachermom 12/3/12 $19,275.03 (1/1/2012 $2529.41, Goal $58,020) Going to update at this point but will have at least one more deposit before the end of the year. Still stretching to get to 35%....right now at 33.02%. Not sure if I will make it as I am trying to work on changing a few other things. I have been combing over my budget. Calling to see if I can get better deals on cable, cell, & insurance. Trying to refi car and house to take advantage of low interest rates. Takes so dang much time to do!! Also, so far not going so well. Can't lower my rate. If I can't refi my car, trying to figure out if I cut back on savings and snowball all the extra I have, if I could pay off my car this year......3 years early. Still have some time to figure it all out. Everyone is doing such a great job meeting their 2012 goals!! Great job!!! Keep up the great work! Enjoy the holidays! Teachermom

murphath 12/6/12 $36,670.39 (02/14/11 $22; Goal: $45,950) Last update for 2012 as all the Dec. checks will be paying for Christmas and a couple small 2013 trips: one for DD2's graduation; and one to bring DS home for a week in Feb. Will have a new spreadsheet for 2013 with some of the same and/or continuing goals, as well as some new ones. I'm the type that always has to reeeaaach. ;D FUND | GOALS | | CURRENT | SPENT | % MET | Emergency Fund | $24,000 | | $24,000.00 | $0 | 100.00% | Property Taxes | $2,750 | | $2,750.00 | $2,742 | 100.00% | Flat TV | $1,000 | | $1,250.00 | $1,089 | 125.00% | Car Maint.etc. | $1,700 | | $1,700.00 | $0 | 100.00% | Patio furniture | $2,000 | | $0.00 | $0 | 0.00% | Home Maintence | $1,000 | | $1,000.00 | $0 | 100.00% | Timeshare fees | $1,000 | | $1,000.00 | $299 | 100.00% | Vacay '13 | $3,000 | | $1,234.10 | $0 | 41.14% | New flooring | $6,500 | | $736.49 | $0 | 11.33% | Window treatments | $3,000 | | $3,000.00 | $0 | 100.00% | TOTAL | $45,950 | | $36,670.59 | $4,130 | 79.81% | |

So, I went way beyond my goal. Originally, I was going to save $5000, but I'm actually at $15k, plus another 4250 for my Roth.
The $15k is for my down payment on a house/condo in 2013, if I'm lucky enough to find the right place. In the meantime, December will be a quiet month filled with OT. Yay. I'll post again come the New Year, with my 2013 goals (still working on figuring out what those are.)
I wanted to thank you all. There are other forums on this board that keep me motivated, but none quite like this one. It's almost as if I have a group of friends keeping me honest. There are rough patches where I'll want to spend, or I'll find myself thinking that saving $20 here and there just isn't good enough. I read WIR Savers and all of your great efforts, and I find the motivation to keep going. So, thank you!

Calling all Savers!! Did you know there are only 20 more days until 2013? (I know - I can't believe it!) We're here to cheer each other on to make our goals for 2012. Let us know how you're doing and if you needs some Karmas for motivation.

Norway, I'll have one more update for this year, but it won't be until the end of the month. I think I will make my overall goal, but you can give me a karma anyway, if you want to!

Norway.....not sure if I will have any more for the year except my autowithdrawals at the end of the month. I am paying down some other things, working on refi on my house and car, and trying to put myself into a better position for next year. We will see what happens!
Happy Holidays all! Teachermom
