WANT TO JOIN THE WOMEN IN RED SAVERS (WIRS)? Hello and welcome to the Women in Red Savers (WIRS) group! We are a supportive community group that celebrates reaching the personal savings goals of the WIRS members, whether we are women or men, currently “in the red” or “in the black.” This thread will give you basic information what our group is about, so please read all of the information provided below and then start posting!
The purpose of the Savers group is to empower our members to take financial control of their lives by setting, tracking and achieving savings goals. If you're interested in a community of support, motivation, and inspiration, then this is the place for you.
As one part of the Women In Red, the Savers focus on encouraging members to save, no matter what your level of savings knowledge is. You may be starting on your first Emergency Fund or maxing out your retirement. It doesn’t matter to us, as long as you keep doing it. We feel that positive encouragement and motivation will help all of us to learn better savings habits, and accomplish those savings goals.
A key part of saving is learning to incorporate savings into your daily routine – many of our members are also member of the No Spend threads or the Women In Red Racers. Savings is an integral part of paying off debt and changing your lifestyle, so no matter where you are in the process, this is the right place for you to be!
The WIRS - Women in Red Savers group is a TINY little sub-group of the larger Women in Red community because we are seeking the common WIR goal: Taking Total Financial Control! The same support, encouragement, motivation…and yes, sometimes “tough love” provided by the WIR is applied towards savings goals as well! And because the support and encouragement from a group with similar goals also serves to provide a sense of accountability in meeting our individual goals, what better way to approach this than promoting our own Savers group!!
You may use a tag line as you desire BUT for SavingforNorway To be able to keep track and post updates please make sure and include the start such as: Username Update date Current amount saved you may follow that in parenthesis any manner you wish-Some suggestions are: Saving4Norway 5/3/12 $8,500 ($0 1/1/12 / Goal=$16,000)
Saving4Norway 5/3/12 $8,500 (Start=$0 / Goal=$16,000)
There are some Savers that prefer to have massive multi-year goals that don't have an annual goal in mind so they could just do the basics like this, if they wanted to.
Saving4Norway 5/3/12 $38,572 (Start=$24,369)
We are hoping everyone has a prosperous and save New Year. Please feel free to invite others to join us!!!

HOW TO JOIN THE WOMEN IN RED SAVERS (and work to increase your Savings): - Read this entire page of info!!!!!
- Sign in with the username you created.
- Post a message in the RESPONSE BOX AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE and a list of the savings categories and goals you want to track (more info about this below).
After you post your list of accounts, you are officially a member of the Women in Red Savers! The list of members is updated approximately twice a month, so if your name doesn't show up right away, please be patient! ALL the people working on this board are volunteers and they will get you added to the list as soon as possible. UPDATING So, now that you know a little about the group, here are the "rules" that we have adapted so that it's easy to keep track of everyone. The list shows the date of each person's most recent update, her/his current savings balance, her/his starting date, her/his starting savings balance, page number is optional. Like this: UserName: 5/1/12 $4,978 (1/1/12 $0, WIRS2) The original starting amount and date is listed in parenthesis. The WIRS# is the page number the original post was listed on - it will be different for everyone. The current date and savings amount are listed next to your name. You choose which accounts you want to list and can add accounts later. You can do the (parentheses) part how you want, goal amount, starting debt its ok to already have money "saved" See above post To join, post your list of accounts, goals and any previous amounts saved. (Please do not list any debts here; you can get motivation that by joining the WIRRacers.) We earn smileys to represent how much we've saved and roses in celebration of meeting annual goals! It may seem silly, but once you start getting smileys and roses, you will see how great they are! The smiley list is as follows: $50= $100= $500= $1,000= ;D $5,000= $10,000= $25,000= $50,000= $75,000= and $100,000= Roses: per goal reached, = 10 's [10 goals reached] We do not give out negative smileys if your savings goes down instead of up. This is for two reasons: 1) this board is all about being positive and supportive of each other, and 2) the whole point of savings is to use the money when it¡¦s needed. You may save for a year to pay for an expense but once paid, that money is gone. However, saving that money ahead of time kept you from going into debt, panicking over the payment or stealing from other accounts. That is a major accomplishment! Because we are a community and we talk about these kinds of savings issues, we want you to give us the update about using your savings but it¡¦s your choice how to present your totals. (Some of us find it easier to just track our contributions here and keep track of expenditures on our own.) We hope that your participation in the WIRSavers group brings you the same feelings of empowerment and success that each of us has found. So? What are you waiting for? Join us!

Hi Savers, both new and old um, I mean 'experienced'. A little about me... My DH and I are DINKs and live in the beautiful countryside near Mt. Rainier. I'm a 20-year veteran middle school science teacher. I recharge over the summer months by riding our Harleys, gardening, quilting, and enjoying anything Scandinavian. This year I am attempting to make large (for me) monthly contributions to the categories I track here. My focus will be contributing half of that monthly savings allotment to paying off our HELOC. Ideally that would be $12K for the year but I know there will be some months that it just won't be possible so I've set that goal for $10K. Although I'm a huge proponent for Emergency Funds and IRAs, you won't see them tracked here because the EF is fully funded (equal to 6-9 months) and my ROTH is automatically deducted. Enough blabbering, here are my numbers... Fund | Goals | Last Month | This Month | % Met | Roses | HELOC Payback | $10,000 | $0 | $2,000 | 0.00% | | USGP - Nov | $2,000 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | | Harley Trip - July | $1,500 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | | Vehicles | $1,000 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | | Gifts & Donations | $1,000 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | | Vacay Prop | $500 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | | Cultural | $500 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | | Christmas | $500 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | | TBD | $0 | $0 | $0 | | | TOTAL | $17,000 | $0 | $2,000 | 12% |
Mark my words, I'm going to kick some financial fanny this year! Saving4Norway 1/3/12 $2000 (Start=$0 / Goal=$17,000)

Hi. A little about me.....I am a single parent (14 years now) of 3 wonderful sons (24, 22, & 18). I have basically raised them on my own this whole time and can't be more proud of them....they are great kids! Ooopppsss.....adults now although I still have the younger 2 at home! I teach high school business education at a small alternative high school in Eastern WA. I coach girls volleyball and advise the school yearbook. I also do contract work for an exchange student organization and currently have 60 kids that I am working with this year from all over the world. We have hosted 10 boys.....my sons from other mothers from Germany, Thailand, Slovakia, South Korea, China, and Kuwait. During my free time, I love to travel, read, take walks, snow ski, and pretty much spend my time outside. I also like working on my house doing small remodel projects. I was horrible at saving last year and just totally let life get in the way but in November I started back on my savings plan. Since I just got started I am not going to restart as of Jan 1st, I am just going to keep going. There is also NO WAY I will reach all of these goals this year.....most of them are multi year goals for me. I have been contributing to my TRS, ROTH, and 403B all along, so what I am tracking her isn't my total but my contributions for the year. With my part time contract work, I get the opportunity to take an amazing international trip each year.....this year I went to England and Scotland for 10 days and next year is Morocco. The trip as far as flight and 4 days hotel, food, and fun for the conference is paid by the company, my savings part is for the extended days I am there (hotel, food, and fun!). I just added a new savings goal.....Misc. Fun Money....because I sometimes take trips or do activities with my exchange students and I was totally unprepared for the last few days when we went skiing for 3 days. I realized I needed to make a budgeted amount because doing this right after Christmas was a budget killer this month! Hindsight is 20-20...right? Hope every one had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!! 2012 Goals!Happy New Year Everyone! Here are my goals for 2012. They are definitely a stretch. Last year we hit 84% of our goals so maybe we can beat that at least. Here's to eternal hope! I'm a married, SAHM with four kids ages 22, 19, 8 and 6. My two oldest are currently serving in the U.S. Navy. I've been on WIRR since June of 2007 and on the savers on and off since about that time. Who knew it would take that long for me to pay off my debt? Yikes! Still, I credit these boards with helping me to do a lot of things right. I've only added to my debt once since starting. Yep, that's almost five years with only one (very sad) emergency charged. Not too shabby. I am in the Air Force, stationed at Vandenberg AFB,CA. I am married, twin 3 year olds. We are not saving a lot of money as you can see because we are in the middle of Baby Step 2 (following Dave Ramsey's plan of debt pay off) but we are saving for Christmas for this year so that way it isn't a 'surprise' in 12 months ;D. I already have a $1000 EF so no need to save there. Once we are completely debt free, I will be doing a savings for Christmas year xxxx plus an EF of $10,000 then after that, we will start talking about IRAs, TSPs, vacations, ESAs, etc good luck to everyone!!

HI Everyone! I would like to start again with the WIRR Savers. I tried last year but life got in the way. I am determined to make savings progress this year. I live in IL with my dear husband, Mr. Cat, and I have two grown kittens who are 22 (in college) and 24 (just graduated college). I am an accountant and I am currently taking the cpa exams which I will have completed in 2012. The savings goals listed here will be funded out of my $$. We have a larger savings account that Mr. Cat handles/maintains and my job is to pretend it doesn't exist. I "borrowed" from it to purchase a used car for Kitten #2 and I am treating that as a loan repayment on the debt side. I've given myself 12 months to pay it off and then I should be able to make momentum with the savings listed here. My first two goals are to get an EF to $1,000 and build from there and save for Christmas 2012. Once I get those two fully funded I will add a few other goals. Currently, I have $125 deducted from each bi-weekly payroll and sent to my credit union which will fund these goals. I plan to bump that up to $150 per pay period in the near future. For now...this is my re-start ... Fund | Goals | Jan 1, 2012 | Current | Remaining | % of Goal | Emergency Fund | $1,000 | $165.32 | $165.32 | $834.68 | 16.53% | Christmas 2012 | $1,000 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $1,000.00 | 100.00% | Total | $2,000 | $165.32 | $165.32 | $1,834.68 | 116.53%
HappyCat: $165.32 1/3/12 (Start $165.32 - Goal $2,000) OMG: Saving4Norway - That worked the FIRST time!!

Looking forward to rejoining this thread as DH (bluewagon) and I prepare to start a family, and I hope to eventually quit my job and freelance from home fulltime (which means I'll need backup savings in case workflow gets slow). I'll get some numbers together, but just wanted to say hi and happy new year!

I finished my 2011 race, so now I'm starting 2012. I'll only be racing 3-months at a time. Since I'm putting any left over money towards my goals, it's easier for me to track it in 3-month periods since I don't know where I'll be in a year.

dvm - haha yeah that's what we'll call him/her on here, I'm sure! Hopefully later this year, but we aren't starting until next month. But it's definitely motivation to save/pay down debt! Thanks for the luck!

So, I'll be one of those continuing my savings from last year into 2012 as we will be using it to fund our Disneyland trip to celebrate our DS's college graduation in May.
This is actually my end-of-year total from 2011:
murphath 12/31/11 $633.00 (2/10/11 $22)
I'm also "saving" those Disney dollars and currently have $182.
Happy saving, everyone!

Okey-dokey! Here I come! I am joining this year and I'm just going to throw a number out there. I know for sure that I want to fully fund my Roth for 2011 and 2012, I figure roughly $200/check to my 401k (but I will only have about 20 paychecks), and then another $12k. I have money in my savings right now but but I am going to just pretend that I'm starting from zero and go from there. So this is what my numbers will look like to begin. I'll be making a chart to separate it all out because I like charts. Oh, I do contract work so my expenses are way different than anyone else on here. I have very few expenses and due to my time with the WIRRs South, I don't have any debt! I think my goal should be very doable. Also, my savings to my EF is going to start after I get back from my vacation because I need to save a up a little more before I go to make it a cash vacation!

I noticed spreadsheet/math errors in my original post. Plus, I'm going to Hawaii in June and I added a line. Here is my updated re-start: Fund | Goals | Jan 1, 2012 | Current | Remaining | % of Goal | Emergency Fund | $1,000 | $165.32 | $165.32 | $834.68 | 16.53% | Christmas 2012 | $1,000 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $1,000.00 | 0.00% | Hawaii June 2012 | $750 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $750.00 | 0.00% | Total | $2,750 | $165.32 | $165.32 | $2,584.68 | 6.01%

Saving for Norway....no.....it isn't my total for just this year....just goals I have. Some I will need to make, like taxes and Morocco. Others I will carry over and work on until I make them. I just don't really have an idea what is possible as my budget is really tight, so it all depends on how much money I make on my contract position.

Hi all, I decided to give the WIRS a try this year. I got rid of my last debt last year with the West WIRR. I'm not including all my savings here, just the ones that are more in my control (i.e. not automated or pre-tax). I don't know how this works, really, as some of the accounts already have some $ in them. I'll try to get the table working, but no guarantees! ;D entlzha 01/04/12 $1,918 (01/04/12 = $1,918; Goal = $8,250) Fund | Dec 2012 Goals | Jan 1st Start | Current | % Met | Emerg Fund | $2,000 | $752 | $752 | 37.59% | Roth IRA | $1,300 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | Car Fund | $3,000 | $1,134 | $1,134 | 37.80% | 2012 Vacation | $500 | $0 | $0 | 0.00% | HSA | $1,200 | $32 | $32 | 2.63% | Goal Savings 1 | $250 | $0 | $0 | 0.00%
Hey, it worked! Awesome!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!! I love reading all the bio's, here's my re-intro, so glad to join you all again ;D I was a lurker on WIRS for almost a year before I finally joined the Savers race on the old boards in 2010. My main goals were to save up for a house downpayment and also make sure that I was saving for retirement. I was able to complete my House DP goals in Dec, and look forward to house hunting with BF in 2012, after which will be marriage talks, so lots coming up Last month BF made a lateral move to a new company closer to his current home, his commute was cut in half, but the culture is one he is having difficulty adjusting to. As for me, I'm in my 3rd year at my job and am happy, but may be adding an extra 30 minutes to my 45 minute one way commute depending on where we decide to purchase. For my goals this year I've kept some old savings goals and added new ones for what I estimate will be my contribution to housing expenses. I want to say that I get a lot of great motivation saving alongside everyone and thank you for being such a positive influence!! HappyCat - Hawaii!?!? Awesome! Do you need a chaperone? I'd be happy to go along... ;D entlhza - I'm having a hard time pronouncing your screen name. I'll have to make something up. Regardless, it's great to have you with us, especially since you have won your WIRR debt race. I'm like you, I don't track my auto-payments here, just the ones I control. Your table looks great. I think you'll l fit in wonderfully here! Welcome! Yea redwagon! I'm happy that you'll be joining us! I remember way back when you and Blue got engaged... I look forward to the day you announce purple wagon is on it's way. Until then, we'll be cheering you on to meet your savings goals. Saverbee!!! I'm so glad to see you're here! Ya know I always challenge myself to keep up with you. Not with numbers, of course, but with percents. You're a wonderful motivator for me! I hope to inspire you in some sort of way. Perhaps reward you with a karma for every rose you collect?

Well, I made my first tiny saving step and updated my bi-weekly savings deduction to $150/paycheck...up from $125. It's a small step BUT..that is $150 x 26 = $3,900 for the year which is $1,150 more than my entire yearly goal of $2,750. That is if I don't add anything else during the year. That really makes it seem like a workable plan! I should have my EF and Hawaii goals accomplished by June and will have the rest of the year to save for Christmas. I'm also planning on increasing the EF once I reach the first goal of $1,000. Norway: I was thinking the same thing when I read that you live in the the Pacific Northwest...I LOVE that area!

Norway So I will totally change it and won't be offended at all if you don't like it, BUT I changed the 75k to "yowza" guy because a) its actually a smiley face, b) its the one we use for 75k pay off on the WIRR threads--like I said if you perfer the lightbulb I will change it back and totally won't be bothered by it any more!
I tried to edit a little bit bassed on what we had discussed on the other thread. Can un edit as you think is best--I think you write better then I do or whoever did the intro to start! but I tried to put in the idea that we aren't to picky about how you list your goals and/or starting points but the first part needed to be consistent!

Saving4Norway: Thanks for the welcome! Sorry about the screen name, it's just a semi-random string of letters I've been using since I first got on the 'net. I never have to change it because no one ever is already using it! I'm a lazy screen name chooser. ;D Maybe I'll figure out how to change it here, to something more appropriate. I'm also going to try tweaking the table a bit more. Maybe it's the accountant in me, but it annoys me that the numbers aren't right-justified! That probably makes me a big ol' excel nerd.

UPDATE/Rejoining I know I disappeared for awhile at the end of the year. Work has been VERY busy (which is good!). I moved in with my new love ;D and have rented out my home as of January 1st. It has been crazy, but I am REALLY loving life right now!!!!! So, here are my numbers. No big list like normal. I've tried to reduce and combine some categories. My brain doesn't normally function like that, so I may have to spread them back out, but here they are for now: Fund | 2012 Goals | Beginning | Current | Spent | Difference | % Met | Amount to Go | Roses | Roth IRA | $5,000.00 | $- | $150.00 | $- | $150.00 | 3.00% | $4,850.00 | | Wedding | $5,000.00 | $3,470.88 | $3,470.88 | $- | $- | 69.42% | $1,529.12 | | Baby | $3,000.00 | $- | | | $- | 0.00% | $3,000.00 | | Emergency Fund | $2,000.00 | $674.80 | $674.80 | $- | $- | 33.74% | $1,325.20 | | Cruise 2012 | $1,500.00 | $- | | $- | $- | 0.00% | $1,500.00 | | SIMPLE Retirement | $1,300.00 | $- | $25.00 | $- | $25.00 | 1.92% | $1,275.00 | | Heating & AC | $1,000.00 | $365.43 | $365.43 | $- | $- | 36.54% | $634.57 | | Insurance & Plates | $300.00 | $- | | $- | $- | 0.00% | $300.00 | | Totals | $19,100.00 | $4,511.11 | $4,686.11 | $- | $175.00 | 24.53% | $14,413.89
Babybear19: 1/5/2012 $4,686.11 (1/1/12 $4,511.11 WIRS2) Total Saved Since January $175.00 Total Saved Since last update $175.00 P.S. NO! I'm not engaged and NO! I'm not pregnant. But, we have talked about both of these happening in 2012, so I'm just planning ahead! Hope you all are doing well! I have missed posting here!
