Ombud......Personally, I count it. Most of my savings is set up on automatic transfers. Just because it is the same and set up, doesn't mean I didn't save it or make a conscious effort to choose to save versus spend it. If I just did the things I "purposely put into savings", most months I wouldn't have anything to add. Up to you though....do what makes sense for you.

I also count my auto-transfers for savings in my goals. My Roth contributions, EF, HSA, and vacation funds are all mostly auto-transfers, but I agree with teachermom that we still make the same conscious decisions to save/not spend. I've intentionally built in as many accounts to be auto-transfers as I can in order to minimize temptations, so not counting them toward goals would, in my opinion, unfairly penalize myself.

Congrats S4N for meeting your 2012 Goals so early!! Also as everyone has already mentioned, a GREAT BIG THANK YOU for your AWESOMNESS in tracking our updates and posting our progress! Ombud just saw your question about my Parent Retire category...I decided to start this category because my parents don't make me pay rent for still living at home, so I wanted to put something aside each year that I can give back to them in their retirement (because they won't take it right now). They haven't asked or assumed that we children would be supplementing their retirement, but they also won't talk to us about their financial planning. (all of us are late 20s to early 30s and we "children" do not need to know, even though we explain why it's in their best interest to share this info. oh well, parents will be parents ) If their retirement plan is in good shape then this can become "Parent Fun Money", if not then it saves me from scrambling to find the funds to help them later on ;D Hope everyone is doing well!! I've started a new project at work and it's interfering with my time on the boards lol I still love reading everybody's updates when I do my mid-month and end of the month check in's, sorry for not posting more frequently but still love you all I'm thinking that my 2013 categories will remain the same as my 2012 one, maybe will shift around savings amounts, but can't think of any new categories that I'll be adding right now.

Ombud - I think it was me who said I don't track my IRA and retirement contribution. I used to but they were just too boring for me to track so I don't anymore. I guess if I were to be tracking those here I wouldn't yet be at 100% yet, would I? But because those automatic transfers are so... (Insignificant? No. Forgettable? Kinda. What word am I looking for???) Mundane?? I just let them do their thing and forget about them. If the transfers were something I had to initiate each month then perhaps I'd track them just to make sure I made the transaction but they happen in spite of me and my bad memory.
Most importantly, do what works best for you, your situation and your motivation. This isn't a one-size-fits-all kind of group. #dance#

I've been debating about this, but I'm going to go ahead and make a small update. I got an insurance check yesterday that I'm putting in my goal savings fund to replace my dead laptop by the end of the year. I guess it's a small windfall, so I'm giving myself credit for earmarking it here. Now all I have to do is figure out what laptop I need/want/can afford. Not looking forward to that! Quick question: I've saved the $ for a new tv. It's actually a gift for DH--his birthday is Halloween. I've been looking at the Samsungs but have noticed that Consumer Reports also rates the Sanyo as a "best buy". Anyone have one? Any recommendations re size? Thinking 42"-46". Since we currently have a 24" tube style t.v., this will be a big upgrade! One more thing: has anyone used Amazon to buy t.v.s? Their prices are considerably less (anywhere from $150-$200).

I would look online and see what you can find regarding size of TV in relation to the room size. When my exH moved across the country he left his monsterous TV with me because he didn't want to move it. (I'm not a TV watcher so I really don't get the big TV thing?) Anyhow, it seems huge to me so I think there's an optimum size for each room/distance. Mine is a Sanyo and we have not had any problems with it. (Other than I can't figure out how to hook up the surround sound) I can get the model # if you'd like.

UPDATE P8nt 10/20/12 $3002.52 (3/3/12 $1.25 Goal $12,000) I was trying to get to an even $3,000 but I realized that interest had posted, so I added it in. I wanted to be closer to my goal by now, but my lovely exH made a whopping 3 child support payments and then stopped. I had DS's birthday present to buy, the payment on his senior trip, and his driving lessons this month. I guess I am fortunate that I can work hard and ensure my kids get what they need, regardless of what a loser their father has turned into. Fund | Goals | Starting | Current | Remaining | % of Goal | Emergency Fund | $2,000.00 | $1.25 | $2,000.00 | $0.00 | 100% | Vacation Fund | $2,000.00 | $0.00 | $1,002.52 | $997.48 | 50% | Student Teaching | $8,000.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $8,000.00 | 0% | TOTAL | $12,000.00 | $1.25 | $3,002.52 | $8,997.48 | 25% |

Thought I better put some in the car maint. fund. We've been very lucky with the cars this year but you never know! P8nt: Thanks for the info on your tv. I'm getting a 46" LG from Frys Electronics--they get a new shipment in on Saturday. DH will be very surprised. Also bought the corner stand from Scandinavian Designs. The tv price is $629, stand $331. That's $960 which will leave me some $ for a blue ray player and the HDMI cables. Delivery/set up charge is $60. With tax, etc., I might actually be @ $20 under budget!

Murphath: You might consider saving yourself the $60 if you're not hanging it on a wall. My sister bought me a flatscreen and had it shipped. It was super-light out of the box, and very easy to carry around the house myself. All we had to do was screw together the little stand and slide the TV where the old one was. Took out the cables from the old TV and screwed them right into the new one. It was so easy, I couldn't believe it! My BFF's hubby helped, but I could have easily done it on my own.

Rockymountain: No, it won't be on a wall. I'm more concerned with getting it home. I know they come in a big box and I have a small truck. Are they packed well enough that they won't break while driving home? That's my concern--silly as it may seem.

It came inside a big packing box and was tightly and properly packaged.

Murpath, Congrats on the new TV!! Very exciting and your DH will be so surprised. That's such a thoughtful gift.
I know we all like to save a buck, but I have to say that moving the TV wasn't the problem for us. It was hooking up the surround sound. It still isn't right. From the TV is only have sound coming out one side, and for the surround sound, I can't get the remote to link up with it. I'm not savvy like that, but I thought my DS16 could easily do it. I've also read the manual and the parts I can comprehend don't seem to fix the problem. So for me, I'd consider the $60 as money well spent because I don't have the patience for that stuff.

Yeah, P8nt might have a point depending on the complexity of your system. Mine didn't have any fancy, just a couple of plug-ins to/from the DVD recorder and TV, so it was easy-peasy. But if it's more complicated than that, there is a time when you gotta pay a professional.

I think you all have convinced me to just pick up the t.v. in the truck. I have to pick up the stand, too, so that should help stabilize the t.v.. I think this is meant to be as they are having an electronics fundraiser this Sunday at the school--I can just bring the old t.v. there after the new one is set up! Yea!

I was getting so close to 2 goals but that seems irrelevant now. Mom died last Thursday and I have been covering a lot of those costs from money I've thankfully saved. My 'car' goal is obliterated as is 1/2 that EF. But that's just money, right? Do I pay off all her bills? I'm not the executor, they thought men were more suitable for that so they made my brother executor

Sorry to hear that Ombud. Nice of you to help with things but I wouldn't pay anything yet. It should be paid out of the estate. Make sure to give your brother receipts for anything you paid on your mom's behalf. Take care of yourself during this time. teachermom

I'm so sorry Ombud. I agree, don't pay anything with your own money. I was the trustee of my grandparent's estate and all the bills came out of their estate. Fortunately, they had preplanned and prepaid all of their funeral arrangements so that was helpful. I'll be thinking of you and wish you peace in dealing with your brother on these issues.

My brother seems fine just broke. My oldest sister called me up the day after mom died to tell me she was overdrawn. Yesterday she told me to give a volunteer at mom's church $150. I think that's actually helping snap me back to reality. I cannot hand out copious quantities of money. I just don't have it. I never even met the volunteer! Ombud I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your mom! And I'm doubly sorry that you have siblings that are a PITA with the financial picture. RE: your DB being the executor - being an executor can be HARD work. I wouldn't be surprised if your DB pawns the responsibility off onto you. On the upside, I'm sure you'd do a far superior job than your brother.

Well, we've had a rather busy couple of days. On the good news front, I got the flat tv home just fine and it is all set up and waiting for DH to come home and see his b'day present. The total for the tv, HDMI cable, blu-ray player and new tv stand was $1089. That's $161 below my saved amount of $1250. The bad news is our 14 year old kitty cat became ill on Wednesday. We took her to the vet for tests. Turns out she had acute kidney failure. She was not eating, drinking, or urinating. I kept her going until DD2 returned home Friday night--it's her cat. Today we took her to the vet to be put to sleep. It was so hard on us all.....the final bill for all the tests etc. was close to $1,000. So the next couple of checks we'd normally put into savings will go to pay for the kitty costs. She was such a character and very, very healthy until this point. So, $1,000 for 14 years of cuteness was certainly worth it. While DD2 and her BF set up the tv, I went and got a bottle of champagne. We hoisted a glass to our kitty and had some fun telling tales of her mischievous ways.

Murphath: Glad to hear the TV purchase went well! So sorry, though, about your kitty. I've lost some of my own, and it's always hard. But it sounds like you guys honored her life very sweetly.
