Question about this CVS shampoo thing... is it just random types that are clearanced? I went in yesterday to check this out and they had some clearance signs up (though no product on the shelf) but it was totally random kinds that I'd never even heard of. The kind I use wasn't clearanced and I took it over to the scanner to check too - regular price. Are you all just buying whatever random kind they have on sale? Yes, there are only 2 varieties/sizes of the Head and Shoulders on clearance and 3 or 4 varieties of the Pantene. That is pretty typical of clearance items as they are usually a variety that is being discontinued altogether or not going to be carried anymore by that particular store. Drug stores do a reset a couple of times a year and have to clear out old product for new product, new packaging, etc. Most of us are not brand or variety specific. If we find our "preferred brand" on clearance, all the better. Oh ok. I will continue to wait patiently for somebody to post a deal on something I buy. I did happen to come across liquid tylenol on this sort of clearance at Dominick's and picked up a few bottles of that. Better than a kick in the teeth! ;D

When my kids where little I used to love sundays clipping and arranging coupons, DH never really got on board with me so I guess I just stopped. "It will be interesting to see what happens with the use of coupons once the economy improves. Will people who have jumped on the bandwagon continue to use coupons as a money-saving tool having lived through such a long recession, or will many become complacent because their budgets are no longer as tight? " Really the opposite for us, our money became "loose". So no longer tracked/budgeted. naggie: My DH was "on board" all the way as long as he didn't have to get involved. ;D And I suspect that most people will follow what you did. Once the economy improves and money is not as tight, coupon usage overall will drop substantially. But it's just a guess.

I know what you mean Dancinmama (I bet you dance when you see a good deal) I meant that DH income went up a lot so we stopped budgeting. I was a couponing fool in the early nineties when the kids were little. I shopped by myself, looked at price per ounce, used coupons, doubled etc.

DM, I'm glad I took your advise and called the two CVS's by my house before I went out for the H&S. Yep, just like I thought their shelves were cleared before I got off of work. Oh, well there will be other deals to be had. I remember when I started the drug store game back in 2007 I would never have to worry about the shelves being cleared.

Anyone online that could give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated!!! I was looking online at a rebate for Finesse but I didn't see it on Frugal Suz's blog list. Is this a bd company to do the rebate through? The deal I was looking at is at Shoprite this week. Finesse Shampoo - $1.99 $1/1 Finesse Product, exp. 1/30/12 (SS 10/16/11) $2 MIR Finesse Product Printable as low as free after coupon & MIR www.finessehaircare.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/FinesseRebateForm.pdfAlso could this rebate since it says any finesse product be used for an hair product other than shampoo and cond like mouse etc? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!

Many of us have found "new favorites" by trying something that was free or cost us pennies on the dollar that we would never have considered "buying" in our pre-coupon days. In an effort to save money, most of us have learned to be extremely flexible with the brands that we are willing to use (barring allergy problems, etc). With many products, I have found that most of the time, one brand is just as good as another. If my favorite deodorant, say Dove, costs $4.29, but I can walk out of the store with Degree for $.50, I have to ask myself if the Dove will realistically be $3.79 better than the Degree. Other examples might be Johnson & Johnson cotton swabs vs Q-Tips or Skintimate shave cream vs Satin Care - one brand will probably do the job just as well as another.

Another great tip I learned from DM awhile ago - say you try a new shampoo and its just not working for you, but its something you got for free. Think of ways to re-purpose it. I have been filling our hand soap dispensers with shampoo for years now! I use the Suave or CVS brand freebies that I have gotten, but most recently just filled it with the rest of a bottle of John Freida that just was not working for me. But as hand soap, it works really well and smells great!

The recent GC deals at CVS have been great for that. With coupons and EBs and very little OOP, I now have $100 in gift cards. ;D

Also, at least for my hair type, my hair does better when I switch out brands. I guess it just keeps the hair from getting "used" to a certain formula. I am thinking this will be a bandwagon thing because people are going to be "tired" of putting effort into find the deals and such, leaving just the truly committed left behind. That happened with budgeting, people started to budget like crazy in 2008 and then this Christmas, got so sick of having to "restrict" themselves that they let loose (this is the general population I'm talking about). Personally, I have always couponed somewhat since 2005, but not like I am now ;D. Any plans for this weekend? We are going to visit family in Bakersfield and that city gets REALLY good inserts so I should be able to get lucky getting some. I plan on getting 3 newspapers or so and doing the CVS thing early in the morning, so I guess that means I won't be getting to drunk the night before

RE CVS Pantene and Head and Shoulders: Well, my CVS failed me this time. No clearance shampoo. In fact, they had the H&S Ocean Lift marked with a 50% off sign but when I checked at the scanner, it was still scanning at regular price. I might try another CVS if I feel like going out again today, but since the 3 CVS stores here all share the same two managers, I doubt if they will have the deal either. Oh well, that's how the couponing cookie crumbles.

Quick update from my search. Guess I can cross a few items off my list. From About.com: When you are over at the freezer section, look at the labels. The first thing you should look for is an indication that this seafood was caught in America, Canada, Iceland or New Zealand. These countries have the best fishing management practices in the world, and in the case of American seafood, you are helping create jobs here. Many other countries are over-fishing their part of the oceans. And a special note on farmed shrimp from Southeast Asia: These shrimp are loaded with chemicals and pesticides, and are so horrid for the environment -- and the local people -- that I recommend you avoid them altogether. Sounds like you were able to figure out which fish you will and won't buy, which will make it easier for you. The big thing with keeping ones' grocery budget down is flexibility. So, if fish is a major part of your diet, but you are flexible on what type of fish (so long as it fits the parameters of what you are looking for health-wise), you will choose whatever type of fish is least expensive. And you'll freeze some if you find a super deal.

Rite Aid Deal AlertThis will ONLY work for those of us who have ads that go Sunday - Saturday. In other words, those of you in the parts of Cali that have your ad start on Friday, please ignore. Nivea lip balm is 2/$4 with a $10 UP wyb $20. Use $1/1 IPs from coupons.com and Nivea Facebook page AND $3/2 mq's that are supposed to come in this Sunday's paper. The deal will depend on how many of each q's you have. I have 6 of the $1/1 IPs and so I will buy 2 Sunday newspapers (that I hope contain the $3/2 mq's.) So here's what I plan to do on Saturday 12/31: Buy 10 Lip Balms = $20 Less (6) $1 IPs = -$(6) Less (2) $3/2 mq's = -$(6) OOP = $8 Receive $10 UP Net $2 MM and 10 free lip balms! For anyone who is new, who didn't understand what I wrote, feel free to ask questions. Well, actually, if you're "old" you can ask questions too! LOL leanna: Thanks for posting this-- I have not been keeping up very well and hadn't seen this. Do you know of any reason why we couldn't purchase some of these tomorrow and the last (using the coupons from the paper) on Saturday? I'm assuming they will track...? Hey - that's a great idea! And now you've given me just the excuse I need to go to RA today. I want to see what's on clearance.

Remembered Deals This is basically a ‘watch out for.’ I recall in the early years of this decade Jewel (Albertsons) having some GREAT deals on canned tuna and chicken leg quarters in late Jan/Feb even compared to sale prices then. Tuna started at 0.25/can. That is cheaper then what I was paying for cat food. Chicken was priced the same. Naturally, as the years went by the prices went up but these 2 items still were a GREAT deal. I do not recall seeing either item at GREAT prices the last few years but you can just bet I WILL be watching If you see anything, give a shout out! I noticed the price on tuna went up this year. It changed my "low" price. My low price the prior year was .33/can for chunk and $1/can for solid white albacore. Lately, the low has been about .44/can for chunk and $1.25 for solid white. And even those are hard to come by.

I was a couponing fool in the early nineties when the kids were little. I shopped by myself, looked at price per ounce, used coupons, doubled etc. The good thing is that you've done this before (couponing) so you're just jumping back in and learning the new things with the drug stores. You already know how to price compare, which is really a key thing. One of the issues I see w/that EC show & people who jump in, is that they only focus on free things. Free is nice, but I would say it's safe to say that none of us here get "real food" i.e. meat, fish, chicken and produce for free. Sure, there's the occasional cat we earn that allows us to get those things for free. But, mostly, with those items, we know what a low price and what a crazy-insane-awesome price is. And we use that knowledge to stock up and keep our costs down. So, having that prior experience is great. You'll just be adding some new things and should be able to get your costs lower than they have been.

Maybe there were two types of packaging, I don't know. I left it. Everything appeared to match up but I wasn't going to fight over it. I didn't need the shampoo that bad.

The only shampoo DD will use is GF, I can be very brand loyal on some things. Olay is one of them. So any ideas for saving money on those products. I also really need to stock my cupboard, the one that has the shampoo, razors, toothbrushes, shower gel, soap, toothpaste etc. I see a costco trip in my future soon, does costco do coupons? I live in Jacksonville, FL. I am trusting that there isn't any stalkers or weirdos on this thread. Just those who like to save money.

I don't have a Costco but I think they do take coupons. I would not "stock up" on any of the items you listed there. All of them can be bought for free or pennies at the drug stores if you are patient. I will never have to pay for toothpaste, toothbrushes, body wash, etc again. I have only been doing this 3 years. I could go years living off what I already have stockpiled, especially HBA items. But, if it's free or a money maker, I will not turn it down. I will find room to store it somewhere.

Okay, so check out the drug stores for these items, thought they would be but it was a convience thing to go to costco and do it all at once. I actually get a bit overwhelmed in walgreen when I am waiting for an RX, there is so much there to peruse. I don't know where the nearest CVS is but they are here. I also was able to go the walgreens site and put in my receipts (when DH, DS or DD went there) and I got the 10% on walgreens products, so far it is up to 1.67 and I am not done, that is a great feature that I was able to do that. GF sorry Garnier Fructise.

Naggie,All those brands you mentioned are Proctor & Gamble products (I believe). Most of us have those items stockpiled that we got for free or very, very cheap. You can still get the things you want - it just takes patience to wait for the right deal to come along. You mentioned Wags, so you should check out www.iheartwags.com, www.wildforwags.com, and of course, our very own Frugal Suz's blog, frugalsuz.blogspot.com/. If you also have Rite Aid or CVS, there are iheart those sites and Frugal Suz summarizes all the best deals each week at all 3 drugstores, plus some of her local grocery stores.

Another great tip I learned from DM awhile ago - say you try a new shampoo and its just not working for you, but its something you got for free. Think of ways to re-purpose it. I use the Suave or CVS brand freebies that I have gotten, but most recently just filled it with the rest of a bottle of John Freida that just was not working for me. But as hand soap, it works really well and smells great! Body wash makes good hand soap too. I have been using conditioner as shaving cream for years. It actually works better for me. I only buy shaving cream for the men in my life. If there's an either/or sale on shaving cream I always buy it for the guys, never the pink can. Thanks to whoever posted the southern savers price list. My prices are nowhere near as low as hers but it's very helpful to have ONE list to work from. I'll just cross off her prices and put in mine. The ones I don't already know, I'll have to watch for and update it when I figure it out.

I'm not critical of what you all do, and it's great that you can save money by stockpiling free stuff, but for me personally, I'm just here on the lookout for deals on things that I actually want. I have an 80oz thing of hand soap that I've been working through for a few years... I just don't use that much of this kind of stuff to see the value in getting cheap shampoo and then using it as hand soap because I don't want it as shampoo. And I'm in a small condo, so I don't have the space to stockpile things the way you all do.

I think whoever mentioned using shampoo as hand soap did it so as not to waste a brand that they found they didn't like. Others have done it because they ran out of hand soap and had plenty of shampoo and found that it worked just as well. I hope by checking in here from time to time, you do indeed find good deals on things that you will use.
