Hey all, I just wanted to give props to all of you for fighting the good fight - those that have won their battles and those still fighting them. I just read the thread from start to finish, and it's a good reminder of "there but for the grace of God go I." Addiction runs in my family - the alcoholics happen to be recovered, but lots of smokers and I think one on drugs. Substance abuse has never been my problem, but just because reading or video games or whatever I get myself sucked into doesn't have physical effects doesn't mean it can't affect my life and my relationship with DH. It almost makes it too easy to rationalize away. Anyway, Karma all around. roy now, and the rest probably tomorrow as I recover. Why thank you very much Spartan. God Bless you and yours. Your family in recovery. Peace (and a Karma too!) ;D

Just something to think about for those that are struggling. I heard a commercial sponsored by Kaiser Permanente this morning that said, "Two steps forward and one step backward is still one step forward." Lock that into you memory bank and move forward if you happen to take "one step backward."

I accept today's pain and anxiety with a degree of serenity. I can give thanks for present pain. I find the willingness to do this by contemplating the lessons learned from past suffering -- lessons which have led to the blessings I now enjoy. I can remember how the agonies of alcoholism, the pain of rebellion and thwarted pride, have often led me to God's grace, and so to a new freedom. Joy isn't the absence of pain -- it's the presence of God.

Hello everyone, DSD came over for supper tonight,(she's on her third try with rehab, living in a halfway house) so, she looked healthy, had her mother cracking up at the dinner table, didn't stink of cigarette smoke and took the leftovers home with her. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Oh gosh Jake -- sending happy and hopeful thoughts your way! I got some bad news today in the mail, so I was glad to have my sister and the distraction of the latest Twilight movie to keep my mind off things. Here's hoping I still manage to sleep tonight. I'm going to need to get to a meeting soon though. Before my head runs away with me.... Hope and prayers for a speedy resolution Daphne

Quick Happy Thanksgiving to all. I'm dealing with my mother and father inlaw, who will get seriously drunk today, while for of their children sit in various stages of sobriety, at the table. It's sad, thankfully, only have to deal once a year. Blessings to all.

Found this really cool oldtimers meeting here in Santa Cruz (old hippie capital of California, lol) an NA meeting (which is my path more so) Any way lots of oldtime hippies, and fisherman types with 20 plus years clean, inspiring. This was on the board on plain white paper, yellowing....... for the rest of my life, cursed with this disease for all those who suffer, we just got to believe believing in yourself is the hardest thing to do so take a look in the mirror and ask,” do you see you?" everyday and every night we hurt wishing we were taken care of by a nurse this morning I woke up, fell out of my bed damn it!, wish I had some pills for the pain in my head what ya'll don't know, is what ya'll don't see the disease trying to take control, makes me want to bleed past memories, shooting up all these cravings I don't want to use, I pray, I’m begging. please strengthen me for everyday is a new day but where’s my strength, when alls I do is lay. no energy, no effort to be who I want to be the life of an addict, can't you see? this battle has been won the war my friend, will forever go on. so now what are you going to do? hold my head up high, and try not to get the blues! no more smoking powder out of that pipe I’m in the fight for my life. I’ve come a long way, so u don't got to judge so when standing next to me, don't give me that nudge if u really want to know, I will tell my journal, turned into a book, it might sell my dreams now are back in sight with help through the darkness, is that light shocked and smiling knowing I did survive through this disease, thank god, I am still alive. ANONYMOUS..................................... It struck me, thought I'd share..... Peace, and love, ya'll. Exploring Santa Cruz, going hiking with my doggie on the beach. Off to Yosemite in the morning. Had incredible Cioppino and Scallops/prawns in garlic last nite. mmmmmm

Whether we know, acknowledge or are even vaguely aware of it, each of us has a very special, extremely important gift. It is the ability to make other people feel good. We can't always do it and we can't always get other people to do it for us, but if we look for the opportunity, there are many times when we can say that little word of encouragement, that expression of gratitude, that little sign of humility or caring and see an immediate change for the better in someone we know and care about....... ..... We get to watch, discuss and study ourselves in recovery and one of the funny things I have noticed about me is that if I feel insecure, I try to help others feel more secure and wind up feeling that way myself. If I am down, I try to make other people cheer up and find myself getting cheerful. I have noticed the mystery of giving what I want and finding out that the giving opens the door to receiving. I knew I was in a room full of mirrors ...........
