Question. Your percentages........are they legitimate legal migration numbers or do they include the millions of illegals? it's from a UN report. they don't take legal status into account.
I might also add that "illegals" is not really a valid term. they are only illegal if they can't obtain amnesty. there is no way of knowing that until they have been processed.
if you want to say "illegal border crossers" I can go along with that. but their status is "UNDETERMINED", not "illegals", whatever that means to you.
I would also note that the migration numbers are generally higher than those provided by immigration advocates. I have GENERALLY said over the past decade that the net migration rate is negative. the UN report is more generous to the anti-immigration position than that. so, I guess you should thank me for being reasonable. but I am guessing I won't get any thanks. which means that I will be reverting to my previous position in future posts.
Thank you That was a reasonable well thought out response. I will try to use your term "illegal border crossers" in the future. Good description. (VB runs off for a pen and paper to write it down so he remembers to use it)

Although I have been away from the board for months and months, I do keep this issue on my mind and follow the numbers still coming in on my Facebook account....... I noticed a lot of bickering going on here, all Trump's fault, and so on, and that was not my intent. The intent was to educate ourselves on this stuff........Oh well, carry on! Kadee, your post above this one, hit me hard. I have a couple of relatives who are almost non political (no preference, and some never even vote) and refuse to get vaccinated. Most say they have had covid. Some I believe, others, not so sure, but I say take the vaccination anyway. The amazing thing about it, all had been heavily vaccinated by their parents for grade school requirements and it is idiocy not to take precautions. In my case, I know of only one person in my little world that has "officially" died of it, but I do believe others died from it, but family say it is the heart, diabetes, or something else....... Anyway hear me now, A Conservative political wonk, aligned towards the Republican party, heartily tells everyone get the vaccine. Kind of like,

i agree with that article, Tenn. the big moment is probably 2022. if the Democrats lose big, watch out. Yes, the riots in the democratic strongholds will be large again. Of course it is their God given right (although they do not believe in God) to destroy the cities without repercussions again.

I heard that there might be + 2mil added illegals this year. Does that change the percentage? net migration was 0.29% last year, and is 0.28% this year.
that means that if 2mil have been added, then 1mil have left.
so, sure. net migration would be negative if not for those 2mil.
Question. Your percentages........are they legitimate legal migration numbers or do they include the millions of illegals? After all, the WH Press Secretary stated this week she has no knowledge these migrants are staying in country. (evidently they are here on holiday or visiting extended family members before going back home) Our local news showed the migrants off loading from their plane in the airport hplding paperwork to hold up to attendents upon arrival "we do not speak English, can you help us with" and there is a list of about four questions to show the attendents. Obviously these are not tour groups from other countries On top of that there is no communicationfrom any federal government agency telling the states how many are being dropped off in the state with any instructions for their care.

Wowser! Which way is up? Where do we go from here? The stock price fluctuations in some pretty big companies is crazy, let alone what it is doing to the smaller companies. I know they told us September is usally a down month but this action is impossible to figure out.......

As if there are no gang bangers in Ft Myers, Cape Coral or Miami.........just sayin' local news outlets all carry the shootings and arsons ocurring around the area, just like up north. They just do not shoot as many kids down here as up north on a weekly basis. Lehigh acres! That's were all the problems are - according to my family. You do realize the Fort Myer area has lower population than the Chicago land area right? You need to compare the crime numbers by population. Otherwise a town with 600K people and 3 shootings looks worse than a town with 100 people and 1 shooting. I'd rather live in the 600K town - it's got less shooting violence. Our Indiana residence is an hour from Chicago, so that is our local news on television. On local radio, it is Gary indiana, so I do know about gun violence there and down here. Not even close.

There aren't a lot of times that someone gives you goods and services without the price fairly transparent upfront - to both the customer and the vendor. You go to the grocery store, and the prices are clearly displayed. You sell your used washing machine - you probably post a price, and even if they negotiate, you know the final agreement before you load the washer into his truck and let him drive away. You hire a contractor - there is a contract. You can ask the plumber what their service charge will be before they show up. Once they get there to diagnose, they may say it will be more money, but you have to agree before they install the part. We have no agreement with waitstaff. They wait on us and then we decide randomly what they should earn. It is very strange. And I hate it. I hate tipping culture. I dont think it provides you better service. I just thinknit is a way for employers to not take responsibility for their employees. (And before we get into healthcare not being transparent pricing - it is transparent between the insurance company and the hospital or dr office. It just isn't transparent to the patient.) You are correct on tipping in restaurants. If you have a favorite hangout, there are waitstaff people who actually might be there for a few years, and you get to know them. Tip well, and they always take care of you even if they are having a bad day at work. If you are just passing through on vacation etc, you are correct.

Sort of funny how mass media covers Florida versus blue states up north. It goes both ways - sort of funny how mass media in Florida covers blue states. My family in Fort Myers called/texted in a panic because they saw the news last year because they thought my suburb was being over run with looters and rioters and that building were being burned down in mass and that the citizens were taking to barracading their streets/alleys and patroling with their guns to keep their loved ones safe. The messages were like - if you can leave you can got to X's house in ABC suburb where it's safe... The calls/texts happened in the early evening (I assume they were watching their nightly news) and I was like "What?? Is this a joke?? - yes there is stuff happening but where are you getting this info from - nothing here is on fire, the police have closed off a couple of key major streets around a major intersection/shopping area - which has 3 entrances/exits, and no one is barracading their homes or nieghborhoods. What the heck are you watching " My Florida family is also often afraid I will be shot by "gang bangers" because I live in such a crime filled area. My response is "YAWN! so how about that Sportsball team you watch!" My Florida Family knows more about how astronomical my property taxes and utilities and gas prices are (I'm not sure where they get the crazy info they have) than I do. I have no idea of who is paying the costs they say - cause it isn't me. I made the mistake of pointing out all the stuff they now pay for in Florida (that would normally be covered by property taxes.) and they get all huffy. I suspect they "saved" a couple thousand in yearly expenses (everything they spend on) to live in "low tax Florida" - and they have to travel up here to see their grandbabies... yeah, totally less expensive and wonderful. As if there are no gang bangers in Ft Myers, Cape Coral or Miami.........just sayin' local news outlets all carry the shootings and arsons ocurring around the area, just like up north. They just do not shoot as many kids down here as up north on a weekly basis.

By the way, we are in Florida until week of Thanksgiving when we go back north for family and holidays. FYI, we see way more people wearing masks in Florida than we did in Indiana. Most are permanent residents. The vacationers from up north, not so much...... A neighbor of ours who is a yr round resident here went back north to Long Island for two weeks with family, etc, and said mask use is less up there than down here also. Sort of funny how mass media covers Florida versus blue states up north. Gee-one (possibly made up) anecdotal story means everyone is not wearing masks in New York. That did not take you long! Yes anecdotal, but I assure you Indiana has been way under masked in buildings whether I was in my county or other counties.........and being here in Florida for a week, I was shocked how many people are masked, even walking on sidewalks outside in residential areas, where we are told it is not necessary. Many more than last spring before masks became mandatory or after the restriction was lifted. To answer your next question before you ask, yes we still wear a mask in all retail settings, as well as inside restaurants until seated, or leaving. Not that I really am concerned about covid (fully vaccinated) but more as a shout out to others in the setting, I understand the concerns staff and patrons may have.

My wife and I have discussed this issue. The problem is you have no clue whether your wait staff is making $7 an hour plus tips or $12 or $15 an hour.....It is not like any restaurant/bar is posting their wage scale at the door, unless there are signs in the window now hiring at $15 an hour....... Aren't there some places that split the tip with cook staff anymore? If the tip is split, you have to remember that 20% does not go that far with three people.
We met the wife's brother and sisters for a lunch three weeks ago, and service was great and the beer cold. 25% it is! Of course it was only a $33 tab for the two of us. Not sure if kitchen staff shares the tip, and I imagine it is a little out of line to ask?

I was very surprised by some of the locations, but the numbers are the numbers........but Baltimore as your retirement home base? Why punish yourself? Exactly my reaction to Las Vegas. Shudder. I could think of no place less appealing. We could move to Georgia - we have other family there, or maybe someplace like North Carolina...but I will not be at all surprised if we just stay put in Wisconsin. It's not like our kids are going to pick up and move with us. I think the article just lists the number of people financing a home that are babyboomers. Might include refinancing of their present home who are not interested in moving?

Well for me, I was able to invest way more going the pre-tax route than taxable. Basically my entire Roth IRA is funded with tax refunds. Using today’s bracket of 24%, which is mine if I only have 20k after expenses to invest, I can do 20k into the 401k or 15200 into taxable, and pay whatever taxes come up on cap gain or dividends. So much more money is allowed to grow in the 401k over decades people forget how much smaller the pot would be without it. The security is that if you have very little other income, and a modest pot, the withdrawals will be low to no taxes. If otherwise, you are probably paying taxes at one or two tiers lower. At least for much of it. If not, you got 20 or more years of free growth on the additional money invested before paying the tax. So true. I had $18,000 in a three year certificate deposit in my IRA back when I locked in at 15% interest rate for three years in the 70's. When it came due, interest was back in the single digits so I split the money into three different funds. TR Price, Fidelity, and a Vanguard fund. Since I was now in a 401-k at work I could no longer add money to these funds. After four or five years I closed the TR Price fund and put it in the Vanguard fund, due to better performance results. Today the two accounts are in the hundreds of thousands not tens of thousands. After retirement in October of 2014 moved the 401-k to the Vanguard fund and have never looked back. Since 2015 we have been pulling money out of the accounts due to lifestyle decisions, such as two homes plus a campground lot and park model ownership. Lots of real estate taxes, house insurance, mortgage on second house, etc to pay for. Since 2016 regardless of our share selling amounts the accounts are much higher than previous year end numbers.......Since I turn 73 this year the amount of mfw will start increasing higher due to age, increasing our tax liability. I am surprised how the actuary tables do not drain the accounts faster than I thought they would so far..........but it has been a great run for us financially in our retirement accounts and glad I was not paying taxes every year on dividend and all taxable gains in regular fund accounts, as it would put those same accounts at a much lower total value unless you had enough outside yearly income to pay for those gains. Sort of a rob Peter to pay Paul situation, where we robbbed the treasury of income taxes and Paying them back now.

I hope you do not feel that comfortable about Biden when America is attacked by the groups in Afghanistan that he empowered. if you are talking about the Taliban, I am far more worried about potential terrorist threats from groups that Trump empowered, like the Proud Boys.
as to your contention about Biden's decline- it would be well for you and everyone else to keep in mind that there is only ONE president in the history of Gallup that has polled better on Day 640 than Day 1 of his presidency. bonus points if you can guess which one without looking.
Biden, and those that supported him, should be GLAD that his foibles are coming early. there is plenty of time to make up ground.
edit: the polling I have seen correlates more closely to the pandemic than Afghanistan. is there anyone here that thinks the pandemic will be worse in three years than it is today? really? you should get some supervision for that drug problem if you do. it is a virtual lock that we will be at herd immunity before then. at 150k cases/day, with a 150M people unvaccinated, it will take 1000 days, which is less than 3 years to get to 100%, which is well beyond what we need. so even if NOBODY were to get vaccinated from here on out (vaccination rates are rising, for the record), this is going to be over before the next presidential race.
I put my thinking cap on! My first choice was Clinton, but I think it has to be a Republican as this is sort of a trick question at least for me! Has to be one of the Bush's...........first impression was Bush II due to 9/11, but I bet it is Bush I only because he crashed in his last year and wound up losing re-election.......

SO..... Trump will not win in 2024? You are that positive? Color me in at 75% possible at this point, especially if Biden is alive and wants to run for four more years. Then again what are the real possibilities either of them will be around in 2024....... i never said that.
what i said is that Trump is a unique threat to our Republic, and that it is very important that we watch him carefully and observe what he does. that way, if we survive him, we can explain this time to our grandkids. we owe it to them to bear witness to this horror, imo. it is no fun, but few things that have to be survived are.
did you think i meant "past" when i said "history". that is not how i was using it, and i think that is quite clear, if you have read my posts. what i am talking about is WHY we should be paying attention to him. my girlfriend thinks we should ignore him. he is part of US history, and will continue to be for some unknown time into the future.
No, that was not quite clear. If he is history, he has no future. Biden refuses to let him go into the dustbin of history, does he?

Yes that’s a ‘back door ‘ Roth A traditional IRA can be converted to a Roth even when you have no earned income. State and Federal taxes will be paid. I do expect taxes to to increase in future years - even if we’re not making $400,000 . I saved too much in regular 401k then to IRA so now pay a lot of state and federal taxes on the RMDs. I play around with seeing maximum I can convert without increasing taxes too much. Last year when no RMDs needed to be taken, I converted the amounts of the RMDs to a Roth. Normally RMDs can’t be converted to Roth Agree about regular IRA Distributions hitting retirees hard in the pockebook. We both chose to pull more than minimum amounts out of our retirement accounts last year as I thought our minimum pulls in 2021 and 2022 would be much higher due to increased values of the funds, or IRS would require a catch up withdrawl for the year that was allowed no Minimum withdrawl. Didn't matter in the end, as over all value of our funds increased much more than we withdrawled last year. yeh, first world problems........

I know how you feel about him, but my question is why do you bother tuning in? It is not like he is going to turn over a new leaf that you could change your mind about him........I sort of feel like that about Biden....tuned the idiot out........and that is hard because all networks cover him 24/7 including Fox........unlike Biden, you almost have to do some searching to find Trump being covered, and I assume you are not watching Fox my girlfriend asks me this question all the time. here is my answer:
Trump is history. it is bad history, but I guarantee you that if we are lucky enough to outlive it, our progeny and their progeny will ask about it. it is better to witness it, to soak in all of the terribleness of it, than to blithely ignore it as if it were meaningless, because clearly it is NOT.
this is a defining moment for our nation. it is as big a deal as the Civil Rights Era or the post-Civil-War reconstruction. to ignore it is to miss out on super important history, and to deprive ourselves of our role as witnesses to it.
SO.....Trump will not win in 2024? You are that positive? Color me in at 75% possible at this point, especially if Biden is alive and wants to run for four more years. Then again what are the real possibilities either of them will be around in 2024.......

I'm not thrilled at all. But considering how much bullshit he inherited when he was sworn in (Covid, Afghanistan, Border Crisis), I think he is doing better than most of the other candidates would have done. This wasn't going to be an easy term for the person who won, and most people know that. I hope you do not feel that comfortable about Biden when America is attacked by the groups in Afghanistan that he empowered.

Rumor has it that Trump may announce his 2024 candidacy soon, if only to give himself a narrative against his upcoming legal woes and to help raise money. If that happens, it will be a major blow to the GQP, as every candidate will need to decide to pledge fealty to him in the run up to '22, which would likely hurt them no matter what they decide. It would also energize the Dem's base like never before, and would be the #1 theme for them to push. Luckily, Trump doesn't care one bit about the GQP, and would throw them under the bus if it helps his own cause. Have you listened to one of his recent rallies ? OMG such a self pitying whine. About stupid shit. ‘They made a big deal about my walking slowly down a ramp but the media didn’t say one word about Biden tripping up some stairs - so horribly unfair, the most unfair thing ever in the universe, so disgraceful. ‘ If my kid went on such an egocentric rant we’d have words. If Trump does run again, I hope he runs on the ‘people were mean to me’ platform because I can’t be the only one who wants to punch him when he does that. I know how you feel about him, but my question is why do you bother tuning in? It is not like he is going to turn over a new leaf that you could change your mind about him........I sort of feel like that about Biden....tuned the idiot out........and that is hard because all networks cover him 24/7 including Fox........unlike Biden, you almost have to do some searching to find Trump being covered, and I assume you are not watching Fox

We are in the 24% this year, but next year when retired with zero income, we will convert to Roth enough to keeping us in the 12% bucket and qualifying for subsidized ACA coverage. I need an accountant to verify all this before next year, makes my head spin. Can you convert to roth after retirement? And when you do convert to roth, don't you have to pay federal and state tax on the entire amount converted to roth?
