I think it’s fair to say indigenous populations in areas colonized by Europeans were well and truly fucked the world over.
Aussies did the same. For a really horrendous example, read King Leopoldo Ghost about the Belgian Congo.

I like how the headline blames Trudeau when realistically the government would have appealed the ruling regardless of the ruling party. They generally appeal as far as they can unless their lawyers point out that they will lose and negotiate a cheaper settlement then expected from the court.
I personally have no problem with paying taxes for this issue.

this has been a "story" for a century. whatever Trudeau may or may not have done has been done by at least a dozen PMs before him, and probably worse.

This isn't new to anyone who has paid attention to Canada. Hell, the world when you talk about all indigenous people.

Yes, but I`ve noticed if I point out the information has always been there if people looked outside of their own country, I get told how Americans have too much going on to care what happens in other countries.

dear lord, I wish that were true.
I would be so well pleased if we looked at what WE were doing wrong and fixed it.

I call fake news. Canadians are perfect in every way known to man. I can’t conceive of them being guilty of such as reported in the link.

In some ways we were worse. We pretended we were allies and made all kinds of treaties with them. Then did not honour any of them. To this day we have people that are completely ignorant of the legal agreements we entered with these independent nations and cry up a storm at the suggestion we honour them. And that doesn't even touch on the atrocities that went on at Residential schools. To be clear, our Indigenous people's were our allies. We have never been at war with them.

I think Europeans considered indigenous people to be as simple minded as children, and therefore it was possible (and profitable) to steal from them. Literally stealing candy from a baby. They weren’t simple minded. They just never considered land something people could own.

It is shameful, Canadians like myself are hanging our heads in shame. Truth and reconciliation is what the Canadian people are now demanding. It has become a movement supported by the people, politicians have been ignoring this decade after decade.
I expected to hear from weltz on this.

Welz probably saw what the OP and this thread was: a way to slam Canada and divert attention away from the very long history of White United States treatment of the country's native and black and brown peoples. Physician heal thyself.
