giramomma, nobody is saying that we need to burn down the community colleges or give up on second chances. Of course someone who’s been away from school for years is going to forget that stuff. And plenty of smart kids screw up in high school.
I spent a year and a half teaching elementary school arithmetic to classes of mostly white 18-year-olds who were going into a lot of debt to live away from their parents and learn stuff they should’ve learned before puberty. Most of them were there to enjoy A 4- year party and/or because their parents pushed them to go to college. Only half of them received a passing grade. Having them prove themselves at the local community college and possibly explore other options besides a four year degree would’ve been a lot kinder.
