I need to make time and do this myself, but I cannot stress enough that we need to have more POC volunteering at Boys and Girls Clubs in disadvantaged areas. These kids need to see that they can be more than a cashier or laborer or drug mule/dealer or prostitute. That learning is "cool" and it can set you up for success. That you don't need the hottest/latest/most expensive stuff to feel or look like a million bucks, and having it doesn't make you a better person. okay, I'm done on my soapbox. That's honestly a great idea. I will admit that I have thought about it locally but to be honest, I'm afraid to go into the bad housing project. I'm not sure what that makes me....but I'm just not sure I could do it
But other than being white, I'm a prime of example of what one can accomplish if they believe in themselves and pull themselves up by the bootstraps. I've been thinking lately about what I can do to contribute to society and that has been on my mind. So I probably won't venture into the really bad areas but I'm sure I can still do something good for the community. Not that I'm rich but I've made a very good life for myself and I want the young and poor to see that they can also do that (I'm not focused on race)
I think you and people like you and MJ need to do things like this. Why do you think that so many black women wanted our one black K teacher for their children? They wanted their children to see not only a black man with a job but one with an education. But that's one year out of several. Now before everyone jumps on me that lots of black men have jobs remember this was children bussed in from the projects so there were no good male role models to be seen.

I agree, the inner city poor areas are severely lacking good male role models. Over the decades, black women have become increasingly more college educated and successful. There are 2 black female OB/GYNs in my practice - one of them delivered DS. There are successful black men but it doesn't seem like there are as many as there are successful black women.

Because dammit, they end up in gangs or in jail or both. How do we stop that?

I taught so many sweet little boys and I don't even want to think about what happened to them.

I have 2 pair! And some at work. Where did you get them? I need some. Knives are nice but sometimes you just need scissors. I don't rememeber, sorry. Mom just gave me a pair just like the ones I own. I've done well with ones that day work for both hands as well.

I've bought ones that were neutral in the handles that worked for either hand at Walmart. The ones at home have handles designed for lefties, it'd be very uncomfortable for right handers.

True, but we could hang out when you get here . The Amazon comment holds though, they do sell scissors especially made for us lefties.

So do left-handed measuring cups. That would be awesome. That means the numbers would be on the correct side so I could actually read them?!?! definitely going to have to look into that. Or are you just getting my hopes up?

I'm so used to holding the measuring cup with my right and pouring with my left, I don't know if I could adapt. Kind of like the lefty manual can opener. It would just feel strange.

This has been a great discussion. I have read many, if not all, of the posts and it's truly good to see people I "know" talking about things most folks don't, things that really will shape our country long after we've cast a vote in November.
Last year, a local magazine ran an ad showing a bi-racial couple with their kids in a gorgeous home (ad was for a high-end realtor selling homes I can't even think about owning). A couple of subscribers went b-s**t crazy and wrote the editor to express their "disgust" and cancel their subscriptions. I sent an email to the magazine editor expressing my support for the advertiser and publication. Last month I was invited to participate with 5 others who replied to the magazine's editorial in filming by two documentary producers for a piece tentatively titled, "Mixed". What was to be a 2-hour on-camera chat turned into an intense 4-hour conversation on a level of concern, honesty and respect I didn't know existed. Today, the magazine's editor asked if he could write a feature piece about our conversation, using quotes and photos from that afternoon. He also encouraged us all to think about future articles dealing with the gut- and heart-level problems of our community.
Point is, we can have honest and meaningful conversations on matters of race, here and in our communities. We absolutely must have them. I don't have a lot of knowledge about the BLM movement; I do know I am tired of watching men and women cry over the bodies of their children.

They's have a cow if they saw Canadian ads.

He was black, mom was white and she was mixed. It was just a commercial but some people are just going to be stupid no matter what. The kid was adorable and doing something a kid would do but I believe someone at some point felt the need to bring up the race issues in it and make an ass of themselves. Dipshits.

SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do have to laugh at a couple of things though. I only have hearing in my left ear so when I have to sit next to people to eat, I HAVE to sit on their right if I want to hear them. Then it becomes an awesome contest to see who gets the fork shoved up their nose first. And the dented and smeared hand. Ah, the memories.

I'm still waiting for cell phone makers to figure out it'd be awesome to have a left handed feature. Send button on the left, camera configuration to the left.... They'd make a fortune.

I may be right-handed, but I do understand the scissors. Back in school, sometimes all the right-handed scissors were being used, so I tried to make do with the leftie ones. I am somewhat ambidextrous, but damn!-- not enough, I guess.

The lefty ones were always horribly dull too, as if they thought buying one or 2 pair and keeping them for 20 years was fine.
