no. That is part of my my point that I was trying to make earlier. IMHO the average joe cheater on the site probably is not going to be affected (in that their spouse will find out) by this data breach. A spouse needs to know about the breach, know how to access the info, go out and get that info, search it and be convinced that the person is their spouse. IMHO that is probably not going to happen that often. 1. As crazy as it may sound, I would argue not that many people know about the breach. 2. Even if you heard about it you have to know how to find the info. 3. Even if you know how to find it (i think I could find it with enough searching) you have to want to actually go find it. (I do not and you do not. I have to imagine most spouses do not think they have a cheating spouse so they will not) 4. If someone does go out and search they may not find their spouse because the spouse used an alias, or an email unknown to the spouse. 5. Finally if you do know about the breach, know how to find the info, go out and actually search the info and find your spouse on the list, I bet many would rationalize it away. Ie. that was not actually my spouse, it was someone hacked their info and used it there. I would argue that only a spouse that already believed their spouse was cheating and was just looking for the smoking gun would be affected here. And if a spouse already believes their spouse is cheating then isn't that marriage already not really doing that well... This is big news. And if I thought my spouse may be cheating I would either find out how to check the list or pay someone to check it for me.

This is big news. And if I thought my spouse may be cheating I would either find out how to check the list or pay someone to check it for me. I agree. but that presumes you thought your spouse was cheating. Of course. There are many cheating spouses though not 37 million or what ever the membership number was of this website.

But a lot of those cheating spouses are married to spouses who don't think their spouse cheats. That is true too. Some spouses suspect and others have no idea. And I would imagine there are some unmarried folks on there with boyfriends/girlfriends looking for a little side action with other unmarried folks too.

deminmaine-I heard about this website several years ago when I read an article similarcto this about the ten biggest cheating cities. Top 10 Most Unfaithful Cities in American (#7 baby! Hide ya wife!)List compiled by AshleyMadison, a website that sets up people for cheating and affairs. It's e-harmony and match.com for married people, and it's pretty popular and successful, but you never hear about it, because no one talks about it for obvious reasons lol. 1. Washington, D.C. 2. Austin, Texas 3. Houston, Texas 4. Miami, Fla. 5. Oklahoma City, Okla. 6. Richmond, Va. 7. Boston, Mass. 8. Philadelphia, Pa. 9. Lincoln, Neb. 10. Phoenix, Ariz. According to a press release from AshleyMadison.com -- a dating site for married people looking to cheat -- D.C. was recently named "America's Least Faithful City" for the second year in a row. The title was based on data collected by the infidelity website, which found that D.C. had the highest number of sign-ups per capita in 2012, boasting 34,157 new members. Two Texas cities -- Austin and Houston -- came in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Top 10 Most Unfaithful Cities in American (#7 baby! Hide ya wife!)

. A lot of people are going to get hurt though, not all of them guilty of anything at all.
I don't think that will happen.

I hope you're right Archie. As seen above, a couple of politicos have already been "outed". Guilty or not.
This will get a lot of press. Sex sells, and scandal sells. everyone will be searching for "famous' names on the list. That is true. Average joe, not so much.

I'm curious how this will affect those in the military. The average person won't face any repercussions, but infidelity can end a military career if anyone should be inclined to take it to their superiors.

This will get a lot of press. Sex sells, and scandal sells. I'm curious, though, how many of those 37 million people who joined the website did it just to gawk and never actually had any hook ups? Does the leaked data make a distinction between active participants and lurkers? There are a lot of people who look at porn (or cheating websites) or ogle members of the opposite sex or back up DVD's to the spot where you can see attractive parts of attractive people with no clothes on (I confess to doing this last one myself - Daniel Craig has the most amazing torso on the planet) but who would never in a million years actually cheat on their spouse. I've heard there were a couple suicides related to this data release already. I'm certain a lot of marriages will get ruined. I hope it's not just for looking.

I know this won't be popular... but I'm going to say it anyway.
Maybe it's time we, as a society, admit that monogamy is NOT the only way that humans are supposed to have relationships.

LOL)

AM aside, our newspaper prints names and pictures of those caught in prostitute stings. The majority have been unmarried men.

Skipping to the end to comment, then going back to read the thread.. Ten percent of the population of my town had an account with Ashley Madison. I know I'm not on there, and I don't see how DH would ever actually have time for an affair....it aint us!

Bite your tongue!!!! ExH is ExH for a reason. Current DH is the father of my children and we will remain together as long as the relationship is monogamous. Married men live longer and are in better health. Look it up.....just sayin.....

I didn't limit the non-monogamy to men (I said "humans"). Women have been known to "get some on the side" too.

Is anyone here checking to see if their spouse is on the list? A friend of mine's EX is on the list. She had already caught him in one affair, so now wondering how many there were?

So, it turns out the women on Ashley Madison were actually - MEN. In fact, employees that worked for Ashley Madison creating fake 'women' for the cheating spouses to chat with: First, the official numbers. The info that the hackers published contained about 31 million accounts apparently belonging to men, and about 5 million apparently belonging to women.
But when Newlitz dug deeper, she found a bunch of test accounts that ended with ashleymadison.com, suggesting that they were created internally (90% of them were for women), and a 350 female accounts for people with the same and very unusual last name. Only 1,492 of the women in the database had ever checked their messages on the site. That's compared with more than 20 million men.
Only 2,409 of the women had ever used the site's chat function, versus more than 11 million men.
Only 9,700 women had ever responded to a message from another person on the site, versus almost 6 million men.www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/ashley-madison-was-a-bunch-of-dudes-talking-to-each-other-data-analysis-suggests/ar-BBm8bI3?ocid=iehpSo - cheating men pay good money to sneak on line to talk furtively with the sexy blond number who likes topless sunbathing and who is actually Ted the 250 lb coach potato with a goatee and muttonchops. Bah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha I think this may be the definition of karma.

I'm curious how this will affect those in the military. The average person won't face any repercussions, but infidelity can end a military career if anyone should be inclined to take it to their superiors. My brother was doing training for a local fire department this week. He noticed the lieutenant was missing and asked. They said he was on leave. He asked for what? For his work email coming up on Ashley Madison. Not sure what will ultimately happen to him.

I find this kind of ironic, there is going to be a class action lawsuit against Ashley Madison. Getting one of those notices in the mail will probably bust more average joes than the hack.

Apparently this varies.
