Did I miss something? Did you have a life threatening medical emergency and didn't tell us?!? Not acceptable. I don't tell you guys everything... Long story short: was in a accident, almost died, needed emergency surgery, now I am ok! Onward and upward We know all the paint colors in your house and when you buy furniture but you skip "got in accident and almost died?" But, holy crap. Glad you're ok.

I didn't even tell my mother till 2 weeks after the surgery and that was because my wife accidentally told her.
She has been crying since then every time she talks to me which is why I did not want to tell her at all in the first place

I am surprised I did not get a bill from the janitor that cleaned the operating room. ETA: My mom keeps saying there isn't enough money in the world to add up to the value of my life... Yeah she should see what the medical bills would have been if I didn't have insurance. Can you say "bankruptcy"! But I am grateful to be here; the bills should be all paid off soon,

My car is still intact, my friends car is totaled though. His insurance is covering it, he already got a check. He got out without a scratch... What is up with that? The driver always come out one piece.

All it would have done is stress her out which it obviously did. Then she called all my aunts and uncles and they all got upset and I had 3 aunts calling me crying and some cousin. I was ok, at home and cozy; did not see the need to tell her. If I had complications and actually was going to die yeah I would have told my wife to call her. I know my mom: she doesn't handle stressful situation or life/death situation well... Hence still crying every time she talks to me more than a month after the incident.

Definitely call your friends insurance to put a claim on it immediately. You shouldn't be paying for this in the end. Keep all your papers together and a journal of who what and when you talk to insurance. I'm surprised they're hounding you for payment if they know it was due to a car accident.
In my state your pip covers the first chunk of your medical (or lost wages) while you wait on a settlement.

In the meantime "I" am getting the bills for the OOP expenses so paid them. My wife filled out my insurance information when I was in the hospital and they billed them. Now they are going after his insurance for reimbursement. We were 4 in the car so we will see how it all plays out. Why would my car insurance cover it? I wasn't driving...

Yes she's still stressed out. Because now she has to worry ALL THE TIME... because she has no way of knowing if you are ok or not, because you won't tell her, so she can't assume you are ok...

I guess I don't get why you are even paying anything OOP. His insurance should cover 100% and any OOP should be his. I can tell you that getting it BACK from the hospital is a nightmare. I wouldn't have paid them.

He had some type of "ghetto insurance" so I am looking forward to see how it plays out. "Ghetto insurance" covers enough for you to be able to get registration and drive the car but not much else. His check was for like $500 or something like that. I was back to work within a week and was already on vacation when it happened so no lost wages really. Post op was last month and I am all good.

Act of God? Snow, crappy car/brakes, tried to stop and car made that little dance like you are about to flip over, hit another car, metal railing and then off the road, there hit some trees for good measure. Anyway we are all alive and well, only two of us were seriously injured. Next time I am driving... Or someone else than can drive in the snow. Anyway now he is banned from driving with any of us in the car.

I think I will stick with my wife first, she would have killed me otherwise Funny thing is when a police officer let me borrow his phone to call my wife, when she answered the first thing she said: Where the hell have you been? I called you 100 of times, I could have been dead. And I said: while we are on the subject of death I got a funny story for you. But now we can look back and laugh. I got a nice scar for a good story one day, maybe get a tattoo to cover it.

Long story short: was in a accident, almost died, needed emergency surgery, now I am ok! Onward and upward Glad you are OK. And while none of us wants to use this as a means to drive home a point, it's probably as good an example as any. It's been said that there is no perfect time to have kids. You have them when you're ready and you make it work. That's what people have done for centuries. The point of cutting back and saving money is that there's no way to prep for every known thing, you can have the cash stashed to prep for the unknowable, like the accident you had. You have insurance, the other guy's insurance will pay up - eventually. But you may still have medical needs in the future that need payment right at that moment. There won't be time to wait for someone else to pay out, or time to argue with an insurance company. Same with kids. You are a planning type of guy; you want your stuff in order and all the details figured out. Life just isn't that predictable, though. And paying for kids doesn't end when they are 18 or 22. It's a good goal and a plausible fantasy. But for every parent who launched that 18-year-old into paying for their own college, or every parent whose 22-year-old college graduate got a huge job offer right after graduation, there are way too many "not quite ready/fail to launch" stories. Plenty of folks on this board can offer tales from both sides. None of it is good or bad. Just a reminder that all of it is one big crapshoot. And if you're going to gamble, you might as well have the fully funded and loaded dice on your side.

Really! I find it more practical than my wife needing $20 for something (pot luck at her job for example) and go to an ATM and gets charge $2.25 then our bank charge her $3.00 So that is $5.25 for her to get $20. I figure and it has worked for the past couple of months that it is easier to just take money out and we each have it in case we need it. I am sorry but I am not broke and dodging calls from debt collectors, my bills are paid and we got savings. I don't see how taking $50/week to split with my wife and $10 of it going to the church is really that big of a deal.
That would drive me crazy (bank fees, that is). I have a local bank that reimburses ATM fees at the end of each month.
