Personally, I think it's way more complicated than that, and to be honest, I think you're making a lot of broad assumptions about huge swaths of people who don't fall into your basic cliches.

Black people got black power, the NAACP, rap. Hispanics got Spanish, the immigrant thing, mexican food. White guys got nothing. That's why they join militias. They want to belong to a group. True, or stupid? Maybe white guys join militias because they think black people have power, because black people belong to the NAACP and these white guys dislike rap. Maybe white guys join militias because some Hispanics speak Spanish, they don't like the idea of more brown people in America, and Mexican food makes them gassy. Maybe these white guys are simply insecure and wish to belong to the Insecure Club. Who knows!

I will say though the number of militias, patriot groups, and white supremacist groups exploded after the election of President Obama.

Given the few militias in my state have caused trouble, murdered people, and have been indicted by the federal government, I think that if a white, lower middle class man feels the need to join a militia group, he doesn't have much going for him.

Wait, what, white people don't belong to racial groups with unique cultures?
People of Irish, Greek, French, Lithuanian, or Ukrainian descent don't have unique cultures?
Huh.

But you can't tell that they're being Irish, because it's not a very unique culture.

Well, Steve, obviously if I posted links to the militia groups that I referred to, I would identify what state I'm from. Let's just say that there have been some big cases against some of the militias in my state. And, I think you're being coy. You should look into a bowling league or go bass fishing.

...Special white. Huh. My adoptive father is white...identifies as Italian. My husband is white- identifies as Lithuanian. I grew up around several people who identified quite strongly as Greek. I'm Asian. I don't really "identify" as anything but American. Because while my descent is Japanese, I'm certainly not culturally Japanese. So I don't "have" pentatonic music and rice and chopsticks. Is there a militia for me?

Why on earth would I join a group that was strongly Japanese? I'm NOT strongly Japanese.
If I felt isolated I might join a group of people with the same interests as me- knitting and video games? This would align with the suggestion of a bowling league or fishing.
Everyone has the potential to feel isolated and not part of a group. The idea that white people are super special in their isolatedness is kind of odd.
Just because someone visually identifies me as Japanese does NOT mean that has anything to do with my identity. Similarly, stating that "Hispanics have X, Blacks have Y" is really silly.
Maybe you should do that genetic testing that's being talked about in another thread, and you'll know what ethnic group you should identify with.

Steve-Search the Southern Poverty Law Center site for all the information you need. www.splcenter.org/The southern poverty law center is one of the most biased groups out there. They were accused of fostering hate crimes against Christians awhile back. Please don't tell me this thread is going to turn into a middle aged white man pity party. Being a (late) middle aged white man I don't feel picked on. So why do you?

Um. Yes. I have gone to a high school cafeteria. I've been in high school.
My group of friends was very "multi-ethnic". But pretty much one culture- the local culture of where I grew up. I don't think we were an amazing knot of super enlightened kids who deigned to hang out with people with different skin tones and surnames from different traditions...we were very average.
I expect it's more about a regional culture of highlighting the differences between groups of people than any inherent human condition.

Join the Lions Club. Or the Knights of Columbus if you feel the need to belong to a group. Knights of Columbus is exactly what I was thinking. You even get a cape and a funny hat. And the Catholic Daughters may show up at your events with home made cookies and pies.

Main reason I started the thread is because I wanted to hear what others think. Also I think it is funny that lots of people can't talk about militias without some kind of superiority. Well, the thread title is "White guys and militias", and I think non-superiority-based militias get very little news coverage... I would be interested to learn about non-superiority-based militias.

"People want to belong to a group. Most militias are made up of lower middle class white guys. They don't belong to a ethnic or racial group that has a unique culture. Anything they want to claim as their own they get called bigots for claiming it."
Everybody has a culture. There is such a thing as mainstream American culture, it's just not always recognized as such.
I'm not sure what you mean by claiming something as their own and being called bigots? Can you elaborate?

Bowling teams can't do that and they would like odd lugging around their big balls.

"Their ethnic concerns are put down as bigoted yet other races and ethnicities get to form political groups to express theirs."
They do have their own political group-it's called the Tea Party and by extension, the Republican Party.

steve, I'm going to be blunt and ask what you're trying to say.
the definition of "militia" is widely recognized as such: mi·li·tia [mi-lish-uh] noun
1. a body of citizens enrolled for military service, and called out periodically for drill but serving full time only in emergencies. 2. a body of citizen soldiers as distinguished from professional soldiers. 3. all able-bodied males considered by law eligible for military service. 4. a body of citizens organized in a paramilitary group and typically regarding themselves as defenders of individual rights against the presumed interference of the federal government.
the militias that you refer to in your OP are what's described by point #4. why do you feel that people need to pretend that they are military in order to feel included? what's wrong with finding friends of like minds to pursue hobbies?
(hint: like a bowling league)
