No actually I didn't mention him at all. I was commenting on hostility to intellectuals in America today and he took it personally. Oh, well, if the shoe fits... The reason he took it personally is because he is in a fragile state of mind. He likely has a huge inferiority complex about intellectuals. People like him need caring support so that they can come out of their small world and realize all the benefits that intellectuals have created for them, and not a slap.

Politicized science of today requires no such thing. See global warming theory.

Says the person sending their child to private school to keep up with the Joneses, pass their parenting responsibilities on to others and attempt to atone for their failures through their child. At least his is a complex and not reality.
BTW - I vote for none of the above. I believe most people are good but the corrupt and bad of each "intellectual" group tend to give the wider group a bad name.

Others need to keep up with me. I am plenty successful as is my wife, but we hope that our son will be more successful than the two of us combined. He has the smarts, for sure. I find it amusing though that in your mind parents who send their kids to private school are passing responsibility on to others, but parents who send their kids to public school don't.

Find it amusing. You're offloading more responsibility than the typical public school parent does for their child because you don't want to go above and beyond when it comes to parenting. You think that throwing more money at the problem, your child, is the answer.
It seems your child suffers from your and your wife's chase at trying to be someone important. But as long as they have fun in math camp then you're dad of the year.
Try being someone important to your child. Maybe tomorrow will be a start.

Ah so, to deep for this , me, I guess. I just post to long threads from around the world that I am accused of going to neferiouse sources, suspect for all kinds of reasons, believe socialist and communistic not yet mentioned but only a matter of time, are of no interest to anyone, [possible correct , who knows] and P some off to the point they don't address me directly..just a simple soul mooching along ..all this other..just to deep for my understanding..but I voted any way and fulfilled the terms of the moderator and instigator of the poll. Now I will just and slink away..bye for now. ;D PS: Actually , zI just noticed the results of the poll..good results, things are looking up after all a bit here. Bravo. "

Oh, dude, you have no idea how much effort we put into our son. You think the 3-4 hours of piano, math, and squash practice each day just happens by itself? This of course is on top of regular school work, and private schools require a HUGE amount of involvement on part of the parent. Money, frankly, is inconsequential when it comes to your child. As for whether we are pushing him too hard, hell no. If you see other Asian kids, they are pushed much, much harder. It's just that our son has above-average talent, hence he survives the competition. I wish I had such talent, otherwise I could have an easy life too when I was a kid.

(actually i don't agree with that book either... i don't know many people who actually did... ) It's a really funny book. I enjoyed reading it, my son more so. (My wife got a little worried and upped my son's piano hours.) I think where it goes wrong is that it doesn't include a reward system. Or lots and lots of praise. What's unschooling? And what's the go the **** to sleep book?

"Dude" is so 80's. Lose it from your vocabulary, if not for the sake of yourself, then for your son. If you haven't already proven yourself as one, you'll be an embarrassment to him in his teenage years.
I'm familiar with the Asian culture. We prefer to teach our children Mandarin, Spanish and other useful things over sending them to band camp or push them to excel at useless sports. A few more years and we'll move to SEA for 3-5 years.
You're obviously trying to turn your son into something. I hope you're all happy with the product, including him.
I also never suggested you're pushing your child too hard. You might want to re-read my post.

lol ... former... you are doing the same thing with your Mandarin and Spanish and 'useful' things... in your estimation... we all do to a point...
unschooling... well, you'd have some fun with that... I'm actually for non-'schooling' until about age 8-9, as in no formal schooling until that point... but i have homeschooling friends who are unschoolers forever... no coersion, no expectations beyond what the child whats to do... helping them do what they want to do, learn what they need to do it, but nothing beyond that...
Most of them did not like the Go the $*(# to sleep book... a youtube of Samuel Jackson has been circulating lately, but it actually came out awhile ago... there is a thread on EE about it...

I am old my friend. 80's language works for me. My son worships me, which is not a good thing. He is starting to push back, which is very good. He needs to think for himself and come to his own world view. I am not trying to turn my son into anything, really. I am just raising him the way I was raised.

Well, I know that if I unschooled my son he would eat no other food than candy, watch TV 8 hours a day, play the piano and compose his own music all day long. Plus he would hunt up old Math Olympiad questions and make a problem set for me to solve, which I would have to do at 10 in the night and get very frustrated. Then, after a week he would get super frustrated as this is a super structured kid who gets lost without a regular schedule. I don't remember the days when he was a baby and had trouble going to sleep. That's just me, looking back I never have any bad memories. I sort of tune that out. Life has been exceptionally good to me.

Since my wife had a C-section I was on overnight feeding duty for the first 6 months. I really never had a problem with it. The kid would cry on a schedule, I would get up, pull a bottle, put it in the warmer, change the diaper, give the bottle, 3 minutes and he would be done and back to sleep, and I would go back to sleep as well. I think what helped me was my general habit from college days to take irregular naps and never have a long sleep. These days I fly across time zones all the time, 4 times a week. I nap in planes. Some things never change. He was a godo kid though - would give me a big smile everytime he saw me.

12:27 AM, you don't let up, do you? Dare I ask if the piano lessons started before DS saved Tokyo from Godzilla, or... Incidentally, #120 is the first time I've seen you explicitly confirm that you're male, Lunacy. It would help others if you specified 'Male' and 'Do Not Hide Gender' in your profile. Not a requirement, but an expected courtesy. Goodnight, gentlemen.

You have close to 2,000 posts now. Out of curiosity, why not display your gender?

You have close to 2,000 posts now. Out of curiosity, why not display your gender? ...well, I'm not one of those Canadian parents raising their own little "Pat," which has made the news lately... nor do I really agree with that choice, but oh well... not my kid... ...fwiw, I was on a privacy kick when the old boards timed out and while registering for this one, thought to myself, "none of your business," to that question... ...I suppose, too, that I'm holding on to the almost futile belief that my words/posts ought to stand on their own, irrespective of my gender experience... and I don't join into the childbirth/fatherhood threads, anyway... ...maybe wanting only my posts to influence opinions/discussions, and not my profile, is too idealistic?

...incidentally, I'd expect that Canadian couple to endorse statement A... how about you?

69% claim no anti-intellectualism at all. 19% admit to what I would characterize as "mild" anti-intellectualism. Others have pointed out that this is more of an inherent skepticism and/or mistrust of authority. 6% (a.k.a. cme) believe that most intellectuals are overpaid and generally detrimental to society. And one of the following (I won't speculate which one): Virgil Sovereign safeharbor37 cme1201 krickitt Lakhóta jarhead1976 oped NoMoreLunacy hello fromWarsaw mmhmm handyman2 oldtex deziloooooo Marshabar formerexpat jkapp represents the putatively mainstream American view that all teachers, lawyers, and intellectual professionals should be shot and buried in mass graves. Also half a page of toughtimes rebuttals, half a page of ID discussion, a full page of... whatever you'd call page 4, two Dem/GOP flameouts, and the great BTDT gender conspiracy. I voted 'A'. I worried that if I didn't, the early voters would assume the poll was rhetorical rather than evaluating each statement. I'd ordinarily be a borderline 'A'. But not enough that I would endorse the statement. And it occurs to me now that since my vote is incorrect and I'm not an American, I should retract it. My only grievance is that it's incredibly awkward referring to someone in the third person if you don't know his/her gender.

May I congratulate each and every one of you for the diversion of subjects, arguing with Virgil, and letting us all know how to start our own polls. Of course, on EE, we frustrated Virgil so much on one of his "polls" that he locked it down by post #43. But y'all are learning and doing an admirable job. ;D
