Saith Ms. toughtimes: As anti-intellectualism always derives from genuine anti-intellectual sentiment (and never as a reactions to inflammatory or hypocritical statements), assuming that Ms. times' supposition is correct, the lesser-enlightened denizens among us will eagerly make known their sentiments. Statement A: Teachers, lawyers (all courts, both prosecutors and client attorneys), scientists, engineers, and citizens who would be considered "intellectual" professionals are inherently untrustowrthy. Intellectuals in general frequently lie and fabricate facts/conclusions that conform to specific agendas (lawyers exempted for this one). Their work is not sufficiently scrutinized, making them a potential liability to society. Statement B: Teachers, lawyers (all courts, both prosecutors and client attorneys), scientists, engineers, and citizens who would be considered "intellectual" professionals are in most cases detrimental to the well-being of American society. They are paid too much for the services they provide, or are otherwise overcompensated for their work. Statement C: Teachers, lawyers (all courts, both prosecutors and client attorneys), scientists, engineers, and citizens who would be considered "intellectual" professionals are almost always detrimental to the well-being of American society. The government should establish disincentives to reduce the number of citizens entering intellectual professions. Likewise, American citizens should strongly discourage participation in or advocacy for intellectual professions. A reduction in the number of American intellectuals would benefit American society. Statement D: Teachers, lawyers (all courts, both prosecutors and client attorneys), scientists, engineers, and citizens who would be considered "intellectual" professionals are a significant detriment to the well-being of American society. They should all be summarily executed and buried in mass graves, in line with Ms. times' assertion that American sentiment "could rival Pol Pot's decision that [they are] the perfect fodder for the killing fields". You "endorse" a statement if you agree with it more than you disagree with it. If you do vote, I kindly ask that you declare your vote by posting a short message (e.g. "I endorsed A only", "I endorsed ABCD."). If you do not declare your vote, it will not be counted.I'm curious to find out how deeply anti-intellectual sentiment truly runs in the US.

I object to a moderator from another forum using that status to create a poll here which is a something that us "commoners" are not allowed to do.

I know, oped. But there must be six font-page threads out there more calling the majority of Americans "anti-intellectual", Ms. times' statement struck me as so hyperbolic that I needed a reality check, and won't you please indulge me.

Ms. toughtimes apparently has difficulty distinguishing "anti-intellectualism" from mistrust of authority. Hardly anyone would subscribe to any of the choices of attitudes listed above.

The rules prevent abuse, sir, not use. Firing off a PM re: "I'd like to start a poll" is hardly a Herculean labour.
ETA: Curious. Thanks for your honesty, cme.

If you have a legitimate reason to set up a poll and the poll isn't something inflammatory such as "Do you think all Democrats are stupid?", I imagine a politely-worded PM to either Tenn, molly, or one of the other PM mods asking them to administer the poll would make your dream a reality.

I don't 100% agree, but I went with A. I live more in the gray zone than black or white, and A is the closest that comes near my thinking.

"American Theocracy" is an overgrown op ed. Phillips addresses a corpus of all of five issues and then reaches to the moon to generalize them into to "anti-intellectualism". He doesn't even bother with the pretense of objectivity. American politics are paranoid, so I'll give Hofstader a nod. "What is the Trouble with Kansas" I've never read but I'm willing to bet is another "take five issues, generalize a million fold, extrapolate a million fold" classic. Are you telling me that Phillips, Franks, or Hofstader would endorse your statement quoted in the OP? ETA:By all means, Ms. times, explain to us dunces how we should properly interpret your words.

You don't even understand my statements, so why are you distilling them down to one-liners? That is the height of hubris. You have a nasty habit of formulating straw-man arguments and fighting your own constructs. Speak for yourself and I will do so also, you are not my appointed ventriloquist. Amen!

You're absolutely right, Ms. times. The issue is my hubris, my army of straw men, and not the fact that you made a ridiculous and utterly indefensible statement: It's not just religion, it's "new age" it's "gut feelings" it's what do the experts know? We have a strong history of anti-intellectualism in the country that could rival Pol Pot's decision that schoolteachers and lawyers were the perfect fodder for the killing fields of Cambodia.
To focus on merely the religious folk is to do this a grave injustice. It is much broader than that, and it starts with the inability to differentiate between facts and opinions. To assert the importance of facts has such an anti-democratic slant.
It reminds me of the great movie, "The Madness of King George." In this fable, the true cause of King George's madness is the steady diet of flattering lies he hears from all. A bluff Scotsman provides the cure by simply stating the unvarnished truth. I am testing the assertions in this integral, unedited statement you posted not three hours ago. I take no exception to the comment about "The Madness of King George". I find the lead-in comments add no probative value, but viewers can include them if they wish. I have posted your statements verbatim. I believe they are wrong. I intend to confirm or refute this belief using the limited measures available to me. If this approach is not to your liking, I will, at your request, lock this thread and explore the issue no more deeply.

Pubs are the most anti-intellectual party in the modern world- only one to tolerate anti-climate change, anti-evolution dolts.
