I’ve been out on a walk with the kids every day this week, plus playing outside in the yard when the weather cooperates. I was worried I’d be snacking more, but so far doing okay.

Checking back in! I’ve made some progress this year and hopefully manage to get some more stuff done. Sold a bunch of kid stuff at a consignment sale a few weeks ago before all the Coronavirus stuff started to got here, so I was happy to get some baby/kid clothes and toys gone. I also took two boxes and a bag of girl clothes to a coworker. Tiny baby steps.
DH and I are each working from home for the foreseeable future and my oldest C (7) will not have in person school for the rest of the school board after a press conference announcement by our governor yesterday. For now, my youngest M (3) will be staying home as well. My mom is coming up this weekend to stay with us - likely through the end of the school year. She retired last month (thank goodness for perfect timing), and lives alone, a 2.5 hour drive form both my sis and me. We would rather have her here in case she gets sick, then we can take care of her (and also no hospital in her town), and we could definitely use her help while DH and I work and have the kids at home. We’re all practicing social distancing, so hopefully we don’t get it, but clearly we can’t predict that.
We’ve managed to set up a work area for DH in our bedroom, and I’m working on setting up my area an extra bedroom we have that’s basically a catch all room. I took off this week as it’s spring break for my oldest, so I’ve got a few more days to get my stuff set up. Meanwhile, I’ve purged some stuff in the process. I also have a bunch of stuff to donate, but I’m not comfortable taking them right now, so they’ll probably move to our basement until things calm down. I’m hoping with the no commute and not being able to socialize in person outside of our immediate family for the next however long, I can keep making progress.

Yep, C misses his friends and all the other activities. We went on a walk yesterday before lunch and as we got back by the house, saw our next door neighbors playing in the backyard. “Mom, A and B are outside, can we go?” I remind him about social distancing and he can play in the yard but he’ll have to stay in our backyard and ask if he can do that. “Uh no, guess we better just go inside.” 😂🤣
We were all outside after dinner, so the kids got to shout things back and forth at each other while playing on their swing sets.
We are going to try and get dinner from local restaurants that are doing curbside / carry out 1-2/week to support local restaurants. We normally end up doing fast/fast casual a couple of times a week, so going to try this instead.

C is officially done with in-person school today after the governor’s press conference announcing that for the entire state. 😯
This is going to be a wild ride. DH and I are both WFH for the foreseeable future, but we still have to work. My mom retired last month, so she’s going to come visit and help with the kids. I’m not sure how well this will work with M, but we’ll figure something out. And I’m guessing we’ve got at least a week and a half before we get any formal direction/instruction from the school as it’s spring break this week and I doubt anything is place next week.

I’m going to be home with kids and WFM for the foreseeable future, so we’ll see how this goes with me trying to eat okay and be active. I’m technically off this week as we initially planned to be out of town, so the kiddos and I went for a walk after lunch, so that was a great way to get some steps in today. Tomorrow is supposed to be rain free, so we’re going to fit in a walk at some point again.

At this point, we still have to go in to work. I could do 95% of my job (at least) from home, though it would definitely make the team leadership/mentoring/training/teaching aspect harder. Unfortunately, not everyone on my team could do most of their job from home, so I think that is part of the holdup right now. I’m already off this upcoming week as we had planned on going somewhere over spring break, so we’ll see what happens over the next week. I think we’re going to end up going to rotating days at home/days at work in an effort to have less people in the office but still allow for people to get work done.
DH and I work at the same company, so we’re in the same boat.

How’s everyone doing? C had school cancelled yesterday, and then he’s off through the 23rd for spring break + teacher in-service day. My hunch is that they’ll cancel classes that entire week at a minimum, but the email we received yesterday was that our district plus the other 5 districts in our county were monitoring recommendations from our state and county health department and would keep us all updated. It seems like they have decided they’ll all do whatever it is they do together in this, which is (hopefully) a good thing.
After seeing our neighboring county’s library system was getting ready to close for the rest of the month, we went to the library first thing this morning to get the ton of stuff we have on home, plus let the kids more or less get whatever books they wanted. Which was good since our county library system announce they were closing through the end of the month. Now to lay low. I wish the weather would improve - that would make staying at home a little better as the kids could play in our backyard. Oh well. We will clearly make do.

Now, not only has our company stopped all travel to other sites, but today they have banned any customer visits from any location. We are officially in lockdown. Nobody comes in the door but employees and the contract cleaning/vending people. Two of our large clients put this in place last week. It seemed extreme at the time....maybe not so much now. We had a big event today in correlation with the Big 12 tournament (basically a big watch party at a nearby pub) that we canceled this morning.

We’re still traveling, but no non-essential or client required travel. They’ve cancelled open houses at two of our offices next month and just cancelled our women’s golf event in May (boo - I help plan that and it’s one of my favorite events).
The professional organization I’m in has cancelled two large student events for April, a DC event, and I’m waiting to hear what they’re going to do about our annual meeting in Boston in June (though I’m guessing they postpone a decision on that for now).
Several coworkers are involved in a healthcare conference, and that was canceled for next month.
We are getting at least biweekly updates from company leadership on this as policy evolves with new developments. So far no work from home mandate, though, unless you need to self-quarantine.

Our 2019 401k match and profit sharing was posted yesterday to our accounts. Why oh why couldn’t it have been Monday or today?!?
Oh well, at least the market is still on sale from the start of the year.

Austin is the "blueberry in the Texas romato soup" So there is your conspiracy All joking aside though it is a pity they cancelled the event but it is the prudent thing to do. Austin isn't the only blue city in Texas. I grew up in Houston & it's one of the most diverse & liberal minded cities. I feel like I grew up in a blue bubble there & didn't realize how fucked up the rest of Texas was until I moved to another state. But Houston spawned Ted Cruz , so there’s that...

Oh, that girl will be popular at school now. Right?!? Imagine most people in the community know the family. I would seriously shame the parents if I knew them. This was a completely selfish and unnecessary act of callousness.

Another trip this week meant I got in some uninterrupted reading time on flights...and unfortunately, it was wasted on two of the worst (to me) books I’ve read in a long time. So on that note, I read and would not recommend:
Let’s Pretend this Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson
You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero

Fair but don't let yourself be talked into ignoring red flags. I did that with BT and while we could not go without my paycheck I did manage to jump straight from the frying pan into the fire. That being said I was better off being employed while continuing to look for another position ASAP. It was four months of pure hell though, there is a part of me that wishes we had figured out how to make it work. Could you get enough business with RI to limp along? Look into teaching? I'd at least look into bare minimum options before taking this job. That's a lot of red flags right up front. At least that way if you do take it and it's hell on earth you can keep yourself motivated by saying a girl's gotta eat. Yeah, I hear you! RI is probably just enough money to disqualify food stamps! Ebt? Another thing is our staff is now all looking, so.....one job I didn’t bother applying I know boss is already at 2nd/3rd interview stage and she is just better for this one than I am. One worry is job op wants someone super quick. I still don’t have a clear idea what positions the outsourcing vendor might offer. I figure I can always apply later there too. It also isn’t making any great places to work lists!!! I have a good selection of sub par companies to choose from. You have a solid work history, so I would keep applying now for everything that interests you and is a good fit. If the vendor opportunities are something you want to pursue, go for it, even if you’ve already switched to a new position and haven’t been there long. You have a good reason why and your other employment history shows you’re not a seria job hopper.

I did our monthly update yesterday - blergh. We’re down nearly 5%. DH’s 401k balance went down by about half his annual salary between the end of January and the end of February. Mine only wasn’t that bad because I have less in my account than he does. 🤣
On the bright side, my company hasn’t done the 2019 401k match yet (they calculate match and profit sharing after the end of the year - it’s usually deposited to our 401k accounts in mid-March), so I’m hoping when it happens, stocks are still on sale. 😂

I’ve recently read The Power of Lift: How Empowering Women Changed the World by Melinda Gates - I enjoyed it, and would recommend it.
I also just finished The Dream Too Big: The Story of an Improbable Journey from Compton to Oxford.l by Caylin Louis Moore. I’d you like autobiographical works and feel-good stories, I highly recommend this one. His determination, hard work, and never-ending hope make for a great Story.

For any of you who have both Amazon Prime reading & Kindle Unlimited, they are basically combined now. All Prime books are KU books, so they will count against your total allowed. They used to be separate things so when I tried to get a Prime book the other day and it took me to KU and told me to return something, I was confused. I asked Amazon, that was their explanation. So, basically the Prime reading perk is not one at all if you also are a KU subscriber. I only Prime reading now and then so I just caught on. IDK if it would be useful information for any of you guys but wanted to share. So if we have Amazon Prime but don’t have KU, we get access to all the KU books?

C is fairly uncoordinated, but loves every sport, so for now, he plays soccer, basketball, and baseball, and swims. The kid spends more time on the ground during practices and games (for soccer and basketball) than any other kid on his team, but he gets back up and keeps playing. His soccer coach suggested we work on having him lower his center of gravity by having his feet wider apart, but so far he won’t, so we just keep going. Whatever. I more so want him to have fun and have a love of sport/being active.
Realistically, the kid isn’t going to play sports in high school (large schools and very competitive), so as long as he’s having fun and doing his best, we’ll keep encouraging him to play. We signed M up for soccer this spring, so I’m excited to see how that goes. She is 3-1/2 and very excited about it - C is even excited to go watch her play.

Crazy story from today’s work travel adventures (if you’re FB friends with me, you’ve already seen this):
Work travel adventures....
I have friends and colleagues who go to exciting places like Italy, England, San Francisco, Guam, Seattle, NYC and more for work travel. Me? This week I ended up on the roof a building that is a seagull nesting site. And it gets better - apparently they fight each other and eat the dead ones, so the roof is littered with seagull bones. 🤢 My face must have been priceless as the store assistant manager was telling me this before I climbed up to the roof. He said several times it wasn’t a joke, and as per my photo evidence, he was serious.
Seriously one of the grossest things I’ve seen and experienced on a work site visit (which is saying a lot because I started my career doing site visits to beef/pork/poultry kill/processing facilities).
And on a related but different note, DH is probably ready for me to never travel again. Three of my last 4 trips, someone has been or gotten sick. Today I got a call from the school nurse that C complained of a headache so was sent to her office. He had a temp of 101 and we needed to come get him. I call DH, and then make him an appointment at the pediatrician. Turns out the kid has strep. 🤦♀️

Okay, just signed C up for National Geographic Kids and it is 10 episodes a year. They also have a National Geographic Little Kids so I decided to try that for M as I think she’ll love it.

For those of you that get a magazine subscription in the mail, what magazines do they like? DD was getting Highlights but she wasn’t reading it anymore and my SIL stopped subscribing her to it anyway (so good timing without prewarning me). FWIW, DD is 8.5. I was thinking Girls World, but there’s only 6 issues in a year. I was hoping for something monthly. C loves the National Geographic Kids magazine - which reminds me I need to renew it. I do think it’s only every other month, though.
