Austin cancelled SXSW (SouthbySouthWest) for this year because of the Corona virus. Taking a $330-350 MILLION loss for the city. 400,000 people come into the city for the music, art & food.
Tell us all again how it's a Democrat hoax.
Austin Mayor Steve Adler announced Friday he's declared a declaration of disaster in the city and has canceled the upcoming SXSW music festival.
"Based on the recommendation of our public health officer and director of public health, and after consultation with the city manager, I've gone ahead and declared a local disaster in the city and associated with that, I've issued an order that effectively cancels SXSW for this year," Adler said Friday.
SXSW organizers said they are working with the "ramifications of this unprecedented situation" but "honor and respect the city of Austin's decision to cancel this year's event.

It's a shame, but I expected them to cancel this year. Too many major corporations had pulled out.

Smart choice. Unfortunately, we've got a major car show in our community that brings people here from all over the country this weekend. I'll be waiting to see, in a couple of weeks, if we begin to see coronavirus being confirmed in this part of the state.

i have attended this festival 8 out of the last 9 years, and was going this year.
i am bummed that it got canceled, but i get it. it would be literally impossible to stop the CV spread in this festival. you are bumping up against people constantly, there.
70000 attendees, 2000 performers. ANY CV there would have spread to other people. tough decision, but probably the right one.

I'm supposed to take my cousin's kids for our annual ditch school, take the train to the city and go to the museum day. The exhibit we are going to is interactive... meaning playing with and on things that tons of other kids have touched this week... I'm starting to wonder if its a good idea? There are relatively few cases so far in the city. And i am not seeing many kids infected? Is that a thing? I'd hate to be the one to drag it back here though...

The problem is, kids apparently show no symptoms, or only mild symptoms, yet can still be contagious. Plus, you know the lax personal hygiene skills small kids have, when it comes to not putting non-food items in their mouth, sneezing without covering, wiping noses, washing hands, etc. I wouldn't worry about the kids so much as whether or not they might infect their grandparents when they get home, and the grandparents infect all their pals at church, and this thing keeps marching steadily onward.

for those under 40 in good health, this will just seem like a "bad flu". but if you give it to grandma, she will have a 15% of dying from it. so, yeah- this is not just a bad flu. and the longer we think of it that way, the more seniors will die.

I told my kid I wasn't worried about them getting sick, but we have a family wedding coming up, and they need to keep washing their hands or Nana and Papa are goners. My mother, however, says she doesn't understand why the news people keep referring to her age group as elderly. She insists they are not elderly. Man, I love denial. It keeps us all exactly where we want to be....until it doesn't.

Today we were talking about the steps she's taking to avoid getting sick. I said something & then apologized for referring to her as "elderly". lol She goes "well I am elderly & you're old now". I'm 52.

My body is 75, my mind is some where between 18 & 30! My actions some days look like I'm 90 while other days I could pass for late 50's.

If I were a Strumpet (which I am not) I would probably think "yeah! Less people on SS and Medicare. MAGA!" I know plenty of people that voted for trump and not one of them think that way. I will say that statistically the people who will need the most care are probably already on Medicare. So the concern about uninsured people catching this and dying without care could be deflected a little. However, if you are a man over 50, a smoker and uninsured (or underinsured), you should be very, very careful.

I can't speak for everyone that voted for Trump but I know a lot that are all around my age. We are nowhere near Medicare age and do not receive social security. To claim that people who voted for Trump want old people to die is just ludicrous. And to defend people that claim that people that voted for Trump want old people to die is just as bad.

Houston just cancelled the last 11 days of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. This is not a minor thing, this is as big as or even bigger than cancelling SxSW.

Also, no ticket refunds from SXSW It made me wonder if they are obligated to pay the scheduled performers.

Coachella has been canceled/delayed...til fall & another thing that happens in the desert....stagecoach?....I don't know, I'm not into those type things any more....but a BIG music to-do.
NCAA has announced no audiences during tournament...only staff & families will be allowed....at least for first 4 games.

and yes, I know. I was exaggerating a bit. that is what the devil dude was for.
PS- I never claimed that Trump supporters want old people to die. I was actually claiming that made no sense. most of his voters ARE old people was my claim. but that would require one to admit that anyone over 50 is old, and I probably won't get much support for that claim on THIS board.

the planning cycle for the festival starts in October. bands are not generally paid, but the entire OPERATION is. and the cost was probably in the 100's of millions to date.

I just looked at the ticket prices. Yikes! I would be loaded and would definitely never attend again. If a venue cancels I do expect a refund. I’ve had events canceled before and I’ve always received a refund or a voucher for a future event. If I paid by credit card I would try to fight the charges. They have pretty strict no refund policy so that probably wouldn’t work but I would try
