time.com/5799412/missouri-coronavirus-patient-family-break-quarantine/The site will not allow me to copy and paste. Highlights are that a family member came down with coronavirus and all family was advised to self-quarantine until the results were confirmed. Results were confirmed on March 5th and that night, the father broke the self-quarantine to take another child (also under self-quarantine) to a school dance. Can we legally force people to self-quarantine? Shouldn't there be significant ramifications for putting the public at risk? Either this is a serious health threat or it's not. Thoughts?

I have a friend who is under quarantine (her MIL tested positive). It’s no fun, but a responsible person would follow through.
This family probably believes it’s no more serious than the flu so isn’t taking it seriously.
Yes, in a situation like this, there need to be consequences. I’d like to see this family taken somewhere where the quarantine could be enforced (similar to that of the cruise ship passengers)

I think the difference is in the language used. Something similar happened here in New England, a patient was advised to self-quarantine while they were trying to determine if it was COVID-19 or not, and he broke quarantine to go to a college mixer (seriously?)
what medical professionals were explaining about that case is that if you are ordered to isolate yourself, that could be a criminal offense depending on your state's laws. quarantine doesn't fall under that category, although it is just common effing sense.

Would this be an example of an Anit-Vaxxer's wet dream? Get the virus and be done with it. So, it doesn't matter who catches it? It's all good?

Great. Another "entitled" person endangers others by breaking the rules.
How do you feel about a forced quarantine, if they sneak out during the self-quarantine period?

Great. Another "entitled" person endangers others by breaking the rules. How do you feel about a forced quarantine, if they sneak out during the self-quarantine period? Since people are proving to be entitled jerks and ignoring the self-quarantine, I believe in forced quarantine with severe financial penalties and/or jail if they break it I’m not all that worried about myself. Based on my age and health, my risk is about 1% of death. I certainly don’t want to knowingly put myself at risk of catching it because why take the risk? But I certainly don’t want to catch it and then pass it to the elderly or sick. I couldn’t live with myself if I broke quarantine and someone died because of it.

No punishment for simply breaking quarantine. However, charge them if someone is harmed. If someone dies - isn't that manslaughter?

Oh, that girl will be popular at school now. Right?!? Imagine most people in the community know the family. I would seriously shame the parents if I knew them. This was a completely selfish and unnecessary act of callousness.

I wasn't sure the best place to put this link, since there are a few threads about this. but it speaks to quarantine, testing, and the miscommunication that happened around the Biogen conference. many of those participants were denied a test when requested, and they were not advised to self-quarantine. If it is behind a paywall, I'll c/p. let me know. How Biogen leadership conference spread coronavirus

I live in StL and have been watching this unfold locally. Based on the school and location involved the family is wealthy and has lawyered up. Lawyer's statement was that they were not told to quarantine after which CDC released records showing that they were. Local newspaper chronicled the family's whereabouts - grocery store, coffee shop, school, school dance at the Ritz hotel, etc. I haven't seen the name reported but it's clear on fb who knows. The mom and pop coffee shop posted a press release that they shut down and followed all cleaning precautions and are anxious for business to survive.
It's both fascinating and weird to watch all of this unfold.
