I feel positively about Halloween this year as B wants to be Hermione Granger. Unfortunately, that means she has designated me Minerva McGonnagall. DH is to be Dumbledore, but he's campaigning for Hagrid. On the other hand, K wants to be "Butterfly Princess Barbie." Ok, K. Do you, kid. I think you have to be Tonks. Minerva is the bomb of course, but I'd go with Tonks. Or Molly, but she seems too old for your personality too.

I like Tonka. Or Luna lovegood. That could be really fun.
Harper is Peppa Pig. Big shocker. Chloe said she wanted to be a frog. Ok then. Her costume came today and she put it on and hopped around the house. She loved it haha!

Always love Luna.
I was The Fat Lady when we did HP. Most people didn't get it (and to the kids I just said I was the Gryffindor door portrait), but it was fun.

I even made an outside pitch for Bellatrix Lestrange. But Minerva I must be.

It wasnt allowed when I was growing up and I didnt have a lot of interest later. I've been waiting to experience it with A when she's old enough. So you think we can start? Also, my sweet niece-puppy is Tonks and she is the bestest ever ♡

We don't watch the movies yet (my kids are super sensitive), but they're fine reading them at least the first 2. We've been listening to them on audible.
C has played the HP lego game so he knows more of the story line than we've read.

I rarely watch movies if I read the book, but HP surprised me.

My kids don't really see too many different movies. They have seen all the HP ones, or at least all that we own. There might be a last one missing there. The last couple, at least, just kind of sucked. Not good for the kids to watch, but just not really complete stories, either. I agree that the first 3, at least, were fine for the kids. Might even be first 5--I can never keep them straight, as I've never read the books.

Advice time re: school.
B had a sub today who apparently gave an assignment of "write two sentences about a time you were sick." Per her, she started crying. The sub excused her from the assignment, but B said she didn't explain why she was crying. I'm 50/50 split on whether she was actually upset or just performatively upset. Regardless, I'm sure that it was a confusing situation for the sub who expected some vomit and sniffles stories. Do I write a note or something explaining the situation for the poor sub? Or just let it go?

It will seriously be at least a year before you get to the third one.
Do you have a plan for explaining magic? Is it going to cause a family discussion--grandparents too?

(I also think this is kind of a weird writing prompt, but whatever.)

I read all but the last HP book aloud to DD and I have to admit I was very disappointed when she wanted to read the last one on her own. She was 3rd or 4th grade when we started but she was a late reader so those books were beyond her when we started. Then even once we got to where she could read them we enjoyed the time together sprawled across the bed while I read them aloud. A nice memory for me this evening.

I say just let it go. She's likely not going to see her other than a couple of days. If you do explain, keep it high level. Something like "She had a really rough time when she was hospitalized for an illness."

(I also think this is kind of a weird writing prompt, but whatever.) The writing prompt is one that--in theory--every kid should have something to write about. Where I live, 99.9% of kids have seen the Pacific Ocean, so that's a common experience that all could write about. Now...ask them to write about a hurricane--that just won't get a response around here.
Is that the type of writing prompt that the regular teacher normally gives?

I had to laugh because it reminded me of DD in K when the kids needed to know what mittens were. Well, we live in Florida, most have never seen or worn them. Sometimes you need to be a bit more aware before just assigning something.

A is really into villians and LOVES to watch that Disney Villians show. She loves Halloween and things that are more dark then I would have guessed she'd be in to. Sounds like we can at least start on HP with her.

I'm surprised we survived the 3rd season of Troll Hunters. C really wants to watch a wrinkle in time, but I know he'd be freaked out by the time they get to the Kazamotz. I saw they made it into a graphic novel though so I keep meaning to pick that up for him. He couldn't get into the regular book, but he likes the story.

My girls are 7 and 9 and we just finished HP book 3 yesterday. We're doing a combo of reading aloud and audible. My younger daughter is much more into it than my older daughter who still gets a little scared by it. Both could probably handle reading them alone but it's more fun to do it together. I adore HP so I'm super excited to be going through it with them. I've been getting the nice illustrated versions as they come out which helped when we started.

She's rereading the play The Cursed Child right now. Sadly, she still finds Doctor Who creepy...

I'm trying to decide on the activity.
raeoflyte does the activity need to be linked to the Minecraft theme? Maybe the activity could be food-related instead, ie add your own pizza toppings / make your own sundaes? I'm know I'm old and out of it LOL.

Ex 2.0 had is first night as a Den leader last night. It didn't go well. For him anyhow, the kids had a great time. We planned a hike up a local bluff and all gathered in a parking lot ahead of time waiting for people to arrive. Then before he could get everyone together and tell them "the plan" for what we were going to be covering everyone started heading up the hill because it was already 6pm and it is dark at 7, so parents are all like "we better get moving". Well, this apparently bugged the hell out of DH who mentioned to me when we first started up that "this wasn't how he planned things going". Then he pretty much didn't speak at all the rest of the night...and he's the leader! We got to the top and the co-den leader, the mother of the only girl in our den took over and talked to them about the history of the bluff and made sure they all had a turn with binoculars. She asked Ex if he had anything to say/ask the kids and he said no. He was in complete childish pout mode because everyone had headed up the hill before he explained the purpose of the hike.
I don't know why he did this except to enmesh himself more with Carrot and I.
