Just a note:
The professor looked at 6000 children's books and issued a report on what she found about gender identity of characters in those books. A headline writer at Foxnews.com indicates the study "suggests" something about Winnie the Pooh (and he/she/someone strengthens connection with a cute picture). Krickitt starts a thread with a title that gives the professor a political label (probably accurate) and assigns an emotion that the professor feels about a story that foxnews.com "suggests" is connected to the story.

Correct, bill. I should probably be permanently banned for correct assessment of a really stupid study done by a tax payer funded employee.

Who pays college profs? Gov't employees, right? Or wrong? College tuition seems a good source for university income. If it weren't, state colleges and universities would never increase their tuition. And I did read the article several times and it never gave the political party of the professor. And who is to say the study was requested by the university? It very well could have been ordered and paid for by a private foundation. Clearly not enough information in the article to make any type of claim she was a liberal and taxpayers paid for the study.

I never thought of Winnie the Pooh as being either male or female. Which gender is it? I have my copy of Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne in front of me. It is the Dell Yearling Book edition. Winnie-the-Pooh is identified with male pronouns. Rabbit - male pronouns. Piglet - male pronouns. Eeyore - male pronouns. Owl - male pronouns. Kanga - female pronouns. Roo - male pronouns.

I knew Frank Hardy would get to the bottom of this.

Read her bio- I posted it. No WAY that woman is a conservative. And if she did this on her own time she has bigger problems than meet the eye.

Boycott Winnie the Pooh!!! Or follow the suggest of the author of the study: But McCabe said the pattern also exists in other children’s media including cartoons, coloring books, and G-rated films. “A lot of times this is invisible to people,” she said, encouraging parents to pay attention to gender when selecting books and reading material for their children. “I’m not saying they shouldn’t read books about men and boys,” she said. “Instead, just think about the gender of particular books and be aware of it.” (from the OP)

And they do it on their own time.

While I really don't see it as a lib/con thing, I do agree that if it was taxpayer funded,it was a waste of money.

Who pays college profs? Gov't employees, right? Or wrong? methinks kinda pushing it a bit, just IMO. "Dr. Janice McCabe, a sociologist at Florida State University" I think thats what sociologist are into Krickett, the human experience of, how it effects us, let me check. -------------------------------- I was correct. ------------------------------------------------ Sociology is the scientific study of social behavior of humans. Sociology studies the social, economic, political, and religious activities of people. Sociology has its importance in analysing the various aspects of communities and families, and their behavior in social change and mobility, bureaucracy, addictions, crime and law, and all that influences people behavior. ------------------------------------------------- Seems like a good study, with in the parameters of the field, "Sociology ", possible belongs on EE but that' s not my call or really that important. I don't mind a occasional off zone topic piece of interest and so far this has garned two pages of comments. So, of interest of folks here. That's important too.

Interesting, ugo. And it does say most grants for these stupid studies come from gov't. I once drove a visiting prof whose area of expertise was the study of the sleep habits of fruit flies. When I asked her what that could help us with she said some things that really said very little.

God bless Eeyore, a very gender neutral character that is in touch with his feminine side. ;D

I can't believe there is objection to this thread. LOL!!! And the day gender issues and women's rights become unpolitical is the day I grow wings and fly..

OMG!! I also identify my kids as him and hers!!!! Is this connected to my answering SF's question of what gender Winnie-the-Pooh was? (Granted I got carried away with identifying the gender of all the other animals in the book Winnie-the-Pooh.)

The conservative women I know would smack anyone that tries to tell them what to do upside the head. We're okay with allowing men to lead the family, though, as long as they behave.

I think scientific studies are better then just shooting from the hip and winging it, and thankfully most rational people do too, or these studies would not be done, IMHO
