I don't know what is going on, but the button that allows me to start a new thread seems to have disappeared!

It sounds like a problem with not being able to store cookies. Basically, all the login procedure does is fire off your info to Proboards' server, gets an HTTP reply, and uses it to set two cookies for the notmsnmoney.proboards.com domain. If those cookies can't be set, the login fails silently. It is curious, though, since you should still get error messages from Proboards when your login info isn't correct. I would first suggest trying another browser on the same machine. If the error persists, it definitely isn't a cookie problem. It could possibly be a certificate error. Some browsers (most notably older versions of IE) fail silently on some certificate errors and simply reload the page. One of the most common ones: make sure that your system clock has the right date (within a day). Authentication can fail if your system time is out of whack. It tends to happen with laptops if their CMOS resets. If neither of these measures works, let me know. Still trying to troubleshoot Neither measure worked. I usually use IE but went to the latest version of google chrome to see if that resolved the issue. That didn't work either (with the modem). Chrome did work just find with the home-based network though. Just to try to troubleshoot some more I tried creating a new userid (FULL DISCLOSURE!!!) using the modem and chrome. When I got to the authentication box I could not see the picture/instructions - only a little box that said "null" when I hovered my cursor over it. Does any of this help? I'm sorry to be such a pest but this was the biggest way for me to use two hours of my commuting time on the train productively each day

Something seems determined to block secure content from being transmitted to your machine. If you have a virus checker installed, try temporarily disabling it and then attempting the login or new account creation. If you have any special software for "net security" or a software firewall, try disabling that as well. Check that you have not added NMSNM to your list of "restricted sites", and that your browser security level is set to the default (instead of "high" or "extremely high"). If you have another laptop or mobile device accessible during your commute, check if you can login to NMSNM with those. If you can't, the problem is with the train's router blocking components that it shouldn't. If all the above fail, the problem may be due to any number of things: a damaged OS, third party software that's malfunctioning, or some esoteric setting that accidentally got set in your OS. One additional option is for you to do the following: Press (Windows Key) + R to open up the 'run program' dialog.
Type in 'msconfig' and run it.
Choose 'selective startup' from the menu, and uncheck "load system services" and "load startup items".
Click 'OK', and then reboot. But be warned: this will temporarily disable ALL applications that run in the background on your machine, including virus checkers, software updaters, and any third party gadgets you've installed. See if the problem persists with these applications disabled. If the problem is gone, let me know, and I'll explain how to re-enable services one by one so that you can determine which one is causing the problem. Either way, to restore your computer to the normal boot configuration: Press (Windows Key) + R to open up the 'run program' dialog.
Type in 'msconfig' and run it.
Choose 'normal startup', click 'OK', and then reboot your machine. If doing the above does not fix the problem, you may have a damaged OS. There are touch-and-go ways to do OS repair, but the simplest and safest means is simply to reinstall the OS (i.e. "melt down"), or restore your system to a point where you could log on. Both of these should be considered options of last resort.

I've always used a double space between sentences when posting for ease of reading. When posting here, it won't do it. Can this be made possible?

I'm not sure why it isn't working jma.
i'm double spacing the sentences now.
seems to be ok for me.
if you meant words (instead of sentences) it won't double space between words without you using html coding, i don't think.

I meant between the ending of one sentence and the start of another. Like here. Saying double spacing between the words would have been more correct, sorry about the non-clarity. Thank you for answering, and I don't have a clue how to use html coding. I just remember discussions of, and being able to do it back at the old MSN Market talk site.

Hey - now that the election is over, aren't we supposed to be able to post more threads than 2 per day??!!

At some point after the post election ranting ends, we will increase the number of threads that can be started. However, there WILL still be a limit - probably 4, though it hasn't been discussed yet.

Can we increase it in phases, kind of like what we should do with social security retirement ages? Say 3 for now and then phase in number 4. Thanks for the update, moon.

Something seems determined to block secure content from being transmitted to your machine. Virgil just want to give you an update and thank you for your assistance. In the end it turned out to be a software issue with the wireless modem I use. The latest software update (I do them weekly) fixed the problem. They didn't bother to document it on their tech site, but oh well - it's working.

Does anyone else notice that their whole page just jumps. I've been noticing a lot of this bouncing of my page when I'm on it. Is this a Proboards thingy or not ? I'm not getting this on other websites, just Proboards. I've not noticed this on V5 either.

I've noticed a couple of times today, the the thread titles are a bit skewed when I come to the EE homepage. And after a few seconds they jump back to proper alignment. [On another note, I see that some large rapid blinkies or animated pics are still being posted (mainly on Thoughts & Meanderings thread - EE) - even though they know & have been informed already that they're a problem for some members here. I'm just posting the image link here for one of the latest animation - rather than the actual picture that's on pg 31 (post 921) - out of consideration - so don't click the link if (like me) you have seizure or migraine issues. There are several other problem pics on this thread as well in many of the previous pages. i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w404/My_Favorite_Things/Annimated%20-%20Cute%20n%20Funny/UTUTZUZ_zps6a5737bd.gif
