the 25 who did NOT vote for Jordan should tell him that they will abstain if he doesn't bow out. that would put the fear of God in him.

If I understand this correctly, that would lower the total number of votes that represent 50% and hand the Speakership to Jeffries if he gets the 212 Democratic votes. True?

I bet if the other republicans take them up on this, they will back out of it when the time comes for consequences.

Apparently a secret ballot in conference stripped Jordan of Republican support. He is no longer their nominee. Good for them. Now to see what they do next.

they would be WISEST to find a candidate that would garner Democratic support. that would be a game changer for the GOP.
the second best move would be kicking it down the road by empowering the pro-tem speaker.
i would put the odds heavily on the latter choice.

Why would they do that? What are they expecting Jim to do?

Can’t the House just vote to make the current temporary speaker the Speaker of the House?

Can’t the House just vote to make the current temporary speaker the Speaker of the House? He has gotten a few votes here and there, but they would need to coalesce behind him, nominate him, and then get 50%+ of the votes. And assuming he even wants the job full-time. There is nothing precluding the GOP caucus from doing that, but it is still the same process. There is some support for expanding his temporary powers, but that is still not the same as having a permanent Speaker in place.

My husband theorizes that KM will use today’s developments to get back in to the speakership.

The 20+ opponents should have promised not to vote against Jordan. Let him call for a vote based on those assurances, they all surprisingly vote Present, and Jeffries becomes Speaker. They need to fully and totally repudiate the extremist far-right MAGAt wing of the party and get on with the business of the country. Jeffries would have to act in a fair rather than partisan manner to maintain support and be able to survive a new Motion To Vacate. If the Republicans try to force through another radical extremist, they will lose again. The problem is that there are enough of them that really are that f***ing stupid that they may continue to try. They are not at all interested in building anything up. They are only interested in blowing things up.
I gave my reasons back then why McCarthy should never have been elected. He certainly has no path back now. Jordan has no path to ever be Speaker. I'm not sure anyone on the GOP side can reach 217. The MAGAts will never support a sane, thinking person and the moderates will not kowtow to an extremist. Not any more.

Can’t the House just vote to make the current temporary speaker the Speaker of the House? I am under the idea that the problem with McHenry is he is just McCarthy light. The Gatze 8 would have to surrender, and I am not sure there is anything in it for them.

At least I hope that the far righties have realized that no, they don’t speak for America, and no, America does not want Jordan as the Speaker. They have an inflated sense of self importance due to all the money that gets donated to them from the far right donors but that doesn’t reflect the will of the people.

What do you think tallguy and dondub ? She's your Representative, not mine, so you certainly know more about her than I do, but I've never been impressed. Seems like a proponent of and rubber-stamp for the "Rights for me but not for thee" crowd in the GOP. Also, the votes for not certifying the election and for Jim Jordan for Speaker are disqualifying for me. I would only support people who are for the country, not for Donald Trump. And no, it is not possible to be both.

They picked Emmer to try to win as speaker.
He voted to certify Biden after the last election so we know who won’t vote for him.
He failed to get the 217 votes he needs by 20 holdouts.
Meanwhile, nothing is getting done in the House.
Good thing nothing much is going on right now 🤬
