I put in my notice yesterday. I told them my last day is September 7. I have a new position that will start on September 12. I really wanted to just walk out. Just could not do that. (My new position frowns on people who do not give notice). That job has been very stressful for you for years. I'm so glad you have a new one. Two weeks is nothing. I understand your desire to just walk out. You are not going to do it. But you have to start to check out mentally from that place.

But now....does anyone know how to relax? I'm happy watching movies to unwind. And doing some hobbies.
There's always sex.
My husband also suggested weed - but I bet he would like sex much better!

Supervisor kept asking what she could do to make me change my mind. I flat out told her there was no amount of money that would make me stay. I told her I could be making a mistake (do not think so) but it is my mistake to make. I will be working in a different industry doing bookkeeping. No more stress of accurately paying people. For first time I will not be the only person to do a job.

Well done thyme4change and ners ! ners if you don't mind me asking, is your new job better paid? Closer to home? Remote? thyme4change I'd take some time off and then see what's out there. You're highly qualified, with a lot of experience. Good luck to both of you!

And it’s not just you not making a mistake. It’s figuring out if anyone upstream from you in the process has made a mistake and correcting it before payroll is processed. Even when you achieve perfection, if an employee’s poor financial management results in their paycheck being garnished, you’re still the one that gets yelled at. Is payroll the most thankless job in the world? If it’s not the most thankless job in the world, I can’t think of the job that really is.

I was the sole person doing my job for 7 years straight. I told them this was not a good setup but it saved them at least one salary so nothing happened. They thought it would be easy to replace me but it took them 4 months to find someone even remotely qualified and they are still scrambling now 9 months later with things Falling through the cracks left and right.(I am in contact still with several people as they are friends as well as ex-colleagues)

It is completely transparent what would happen if someone didn't show up one day, only so many times you can point it out. With the increased mobility of the younger workforce things may change, but I worked years and years where just one exit would spell disaster and management just let it go as long as things were floating by day to day.

And it has to be enforced otherwise you come back from vacation and nothing is done because they want to make sure you know your place. Where I'm at now is the first time I've had actual back up. I was really confused when I came back and everything was done I only had to do some double checks to get myself caught up. My coworker asked if I thought he couldn't handle it. I said no I'm just not yused to being in a functional department. I assumed I'd walk into a disaster the message being we sat you can take vacation but we didn't mean you actually can. It was nice for the first time in three years to not have a post vacation panic attack. And no employers won't wake up. They'll look.at the turnover and bitch nobody wants to work.

I could take vacation at UNMC easily the problem there was I'd then spend the next two weeks cleaning up the animal room because nobody wanted to do that part.
It was more work to take a vacation.

My job needs constant communication, even on vacation. But I was told that/knew that when I accepted it. Because of the type of research we're doing. And I am compensated well for that

Try working for a very small church for 20 hours per MONTH and having the pastor call while you are on vacation and be quite upset that I couldn't run over to the church.
I worked there on Thursday mornings, up to 20 hours per month. I had been there on Thursday. I had no reason to have to account to him where I would be the rest of my time.
He wanted to make a change to the bulletin and needed new copies made. I don't know what he did and I didn't care.

Today is my last day. I found out the company has a hiring freeze (because they are have a super sucky year). So, suddenly after 2.5 years of me working myself crazy and there being no one to help because they all had “really important jobs they needed to do” (so important they couldn’t even spare a couple hours per week) my boss thinks they can cover me by having all those people pitch in - because they all have “bandwidth”. I hope my boss suffers. But, I worry about my poor employee. She seems ready to walk already.

If he had done his job previously and made sure those people provided you backup, they would at least be trained to do your job. If you had help, maybe you would still be there. Congrats!

Then the company will turn around and bitch nobody wants to work anymore. They don't realize they cut off part of the sentence. It should read "Nobody wants to work FOR YOU".

thyme4change did you complete an exit interview with HR? If so, were you honest about why you chose to resign?

thyme4change did you complete an exit interview with HR? If so, were you honest about why you chose to resign? I did have an exit interview and I was not completely honest. I liken what I said to “It’s not you, it’s me.” I told them the company has changed to be more corporate and I no longer was a fit. I told them I used to be involved in a lot more of the business and now I just fill in templates. We talked about my promotion and I told her I wish I had never taken it and I have been unhappy ever since, with the caveat that I knew the hiring freeze during Covid wasn’t the company’s fault, but it still set me up for failure. After that, she asked me a series of questions to rate my boss in certain areas. None of those areas were autonomy or trust or anything I could use to criticize him. It was a lot about communication and being available. She asked me what contributed to my decision (yes or no). Some of the things on the list were Leadership, commute, office politics, etc. I can’t recall which she said- workload or duties. She asked me several times in several ways what could have changed to make me stay, which felt more routine vs someone telling her to persuade me to stay. This is where I focused mainly on the change in the company. She asked if I wanted her to advocate for me to go back to just having my one business unit and I told her that might have worked 18 months ago, but it was too late now. She said I was very genuine - which was funny because I felt very guarded during the whole talk. I guess I hid it well. I cried when I left my key in my desk and walked out the door - luckily no one was around. As a whole, the company was good to me. One person I didn’t get to say goodbye to sent me a message in LinkedIn, so when I was in there answering her, I decided to add an end date to my job. After that, dozens of people from within the company had viewed my profile. Some I knew, others were total strangers. So, LinkedIn must do a push notice when someone leaves? My husband took Friday off and we went out of town, so this feels like my first day of unemployment. I am a little lost- but I am going to do some chores, maybe grocery shop. I told my husband I would cook dinner. Catch me in a week to see how lost I am.

thyme4change sounds as if you were professional right up until the end. Classy way to leave a very unpleasant situation. I may have told this story before but my husband knew of someone who left their employer and completed a written exit interview. He said something to the effect of he decided to leave because he was tired of "being anally raped on a nightly basis". An HR representative quickly followed up to make sure he was being figurative and not literal. I don't know the man's name but he became a legend!

I am not sure it was so much classy as it was cautiousness. If I wanted to burn every bridge, I wouldn’t have worked the last two weeks. I will need people who work there to be my references. I would hate for my exit interview to bite my ass. Although - telling the company in writing I was anal raped repeatedly would have felt awesome!

Last week LinkedIn sent me an email telling me I would be a good candidate for a new job posting. It was my old job. 🤣🤣
Almost 2 months out, and I am shocked at how little I miss anything about or anyone at my old job.

Different situation/life stage as I retired but after a couple of decades, of which quite a few years where I was the only one in my function, I can't say I have missed work at all. I still have contact with just a few people but only those with whom I was friends with outside of work. The others...I wish them well but I am not all that interested in their lives
